Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) Profiles of concentrations and temperature are measured using infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography techniques. In conjunction with the experiments, a one-dimensional numerical model is developed, capable of simulating flame quenching with deposition over a range of conditions extending from the low pressure, steady state burner experiments to high pressure, rapid transient engine conditions, using chemical mechanisms of precursor formation that may be determined experimentally. Modeling of deposition with simplified chemical mechanisms reveals that deposition by condensation can reproduce trends observed in experiments by other researchers; however, adsorption could still be a contributing factor. Experimental observations of toluene-doped flames show the formation of oxygenated compounds such as benzaldehyde and benzofuran, which are likely deposit precursor candidates. The methodology developed in this thesis shows promise for determining deposit precursor identities and formation mechanisms for important fuel components, and for clarifying the role of gas-phase processes in the formation of combustion chamber deposits.

Book Synopsis Study of Deposit Formation Inside Diesel Injectors Nozzles by : YinChun Wang (Ph. D.)
Download or read book Study of Deposit Formation Inside Diesel Injectors Nozzles written by YinChun Wang (Ph. D.) and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diesel engines are widely used in heavy duty transportation applications such as in trucks, buses and ships because of their reliability and high torque output. A key diesel technology is the injection system which is constantly improved to produce better spray quality and deeper spray penetration in the combustion chamber by using high injection pressure and improving the design of the nozzle holes. The hole size has been continuously reduced; future diameters less than 100 um are expected. Smaller nozzle holes are vulnerable to deposit formation, which will reduce the flow rate and affect the spray pattern. The objective of this study is to understand the processes that would lead to deposit formation on the injector nozzle surfaces. In specific, a detailed mechanism is proposed after observing engine and injector simulation results. Models for the physical processes and chemical mechanisms responsible for the deposit formation are developed. These models are incorporated into a integrated software package to facilitate calculations of deposit formation rates under different conditions. A benchscale test rig is also constructed to measure the deposit formation of different fuels and detergents. Experiments show that the test procedure can differentiate good detergents from ineffective ones; hence it can be used to pre-screen the detergents and fuels before engine tests. Thus the cost of testing could be reduced substantially. This study is the first to develop a comprehensive quantitative model for injector nozzle deposit formation and a bench scale testing apparatus encompassing the key deposit formation processes of film formation, evaporation and washing.
Book Synopsis Summary of International Energy Research and Development Activities 1974-1976 by : Sam Stuart
Download or read book Summary of International Energy Research and Development Activities 1974-1976 written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary of International Energy Research and Development Activities 1974–1976 is a directory of energy research and development projects conducted in various countries such as Canada, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom between 1974 and 1976. A limited number of projects sponsored by international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency are also included. This directory consists of nine chapters and opens with a section on organic sources of energy such as coal, oil and gas, peat, hydrocarbons, and non-fossil organic sources. The next sections focus on thermonuclear energy and plasma physics; fission sources and energy production; geophysical energy sources; conversion technology; and environmental aspects of energy conversion and use. Energy transport, transmission, utilization, and conservation are also covered. The final chapter deals with energy systems and other energy-related research on subjects ranging from car sharing and urban passenger transport to nuclear power plants, energy supply and demand models, and high-power molecular lasers. This monograph will be a valuable resource of information for those involved in energy research and development.
Book Synopsis Automotive Fuels Reference Book by : Paul Richards
Download or read book Automotive Fuels Reference Book written by Paul Richards and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first two editions of this title, published by SAE International in 1990 and 1995, have been best-selling definitive references for those needing technical information about automotive fuels. This long-awaited new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated, yet retains the original fundamental fuels information that readers find so useful. This book is written for those with an interest in or a need to understand automotive fuels. Because automotive fuels can no longer be developed in isolation from the engines that will convert the fuel into the power necessary to drive our automobiles, knowledge of automotive fuels will also be essential to those working with automotive engines. Small quantities of fuel additives increasingly play an important role in bridging the gap that often exists between fuel that can easily be produced and fuel that is needed by the ever-more sophisticated automotive engine. This book pulls together in a single, extensively referenced volume, the three different but related topics of automotive fuels, fuel additives, and engines, and shows how all three areas work together. It includes a brief history of automotive fuels development, followed by chapters on automotive fuels manufacture from crude oil and other fossil sources. One chapter is dedicated to the manufacture of automotive fuels and fuel blending components from renewable sources. The safe handling, transport, and storage of fuels, from all sources, are covered. New combustion systems to achieve reduced emissions and increased efficiency are discussed, and the way in which the fuels’ physical and chemical characteristics affect these combustion processes and the emissions produced are included. There is also discussion on engine fuel system development and how these different systems affect the corresponding fuel requirements. Because the book is for a global market, fuel system technologies that only exist in the legacy fleet in some markets are included. The way in which fuel requirements are developed and specified is discussed. This covers test methods from simple laboratory bench tests, through engine testing, and long-term test procedures.
