Book excerpt: The thesis was focused on synthesis and study of structural and physical properties of several quasi low-dimensional and anisotropic materials. The physical properties of KxP4W8O32 were examined in purpose to elucidate the phase transition observed for x varying from 0,9 to 1,8. The x content was determined by EDS spectrography under electron microscope. Physical properties like resistivity, magnetoresistance, DC magnetisation, thermopower, thermal transport, and U(I) curves for high currents were studied. Structural study was performed with synchrotron Soleil, beam line Crystal. The obtained results prove the existence of CDW in studied material. The NaxP4W20O68 was sydied by Sbubnikow - de Haas oscillations. The high m members of the (PO2)4(WO3)2m bronzes family were synthesized for the first time. Powders of m = 6, 9, 10 and 11,5 respectively were obtained using solid state reaction method. Large single crystals of m = 10 and m = 11,5 were grown by chemical vapor technique. Crystal structure was solved by X - ray single crystal diffraction. Electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance were studied to investigate the effective dimensionality. The crystallographic and transport measurements were performed to investigate anomaly in m = 6 compound around T = 265. K.Bi-Ba-Co-O misfit cobaltite single crystals were grown by molten salt synthesis method. XRD single crystal diffraction and electron diffraction were performed to identify crystallographic parameters. Composition of the samples was determined by EDS. Surface and cross section of the samples was studied by SEM. Transport properties of samples of different quality was studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a study of thermal and electrical transport phenomena in heterostructures of transition metal oxides, with specific interest in understanding and tailoring thermoelectricity in these systems. Thermoelectric energy conversion is a promising method for waste heat recovery and the efficiency of such an engine is directly related to a material dependent figure of merit, Z, given as S2, where S is thermopower and are electrical and thermal conductivity respectively. Achieving large figure of merit has been hampered by the coupling between these three thermoelectric coefficients, and the primary aim of this study is to understand the nature of thermoelectricity in complex oxides and identify mechanisms which can allow tuning of one or more thermoelectric coefficients in a favorable manner. Unlike the heavily studied conventional thermoelectric semiconductors, transition metals based complex oxides show conduction band characteristics dominated by d-bands, with much larger effective masses and varying degrees of electron correlations. These systems provide for exotic thermoelectric effects which are typically not explained by conventional theories and hence provide an ideal platform for exploring the limits of thermoelectricity. Meanwhile, oxides are composed of earth abundant elements and have excellent high temperature stability, thus providing compelling technological possibilities for thermoelectrics based power generation. In this dissertation, we address specific aspects of thermoelectricity in model complex oxide systems such as perovskite titanates and layered cobaltates to understand thermal and thermoelectric behavior and explore the tunability of thermoelectricity in these systems. The demonstration of band engineering as a viable method to tune physical properties of materials is explored. The model system used for this case is strontium titanate, where two dopants such as La on the Sr-site and oxygen vacancies are employed to achieve band engineering. This method was used to obtain tunable transparent conducting properties and thermoelectric properties for heavily doped strontium titanate. The second aspect investigated is the use of strongly correlated materials for thermoelectricity. The cobaltates, specifically layered cobaltates, show large thermopower even at very large carrier densities. The coupling of thermopower and electrical conductivity is shown to be weaker for a strongly correlated material such as cobaltate, which opens up possibilities of complete decoupling of all three thermoelectric coefficients. Finally, the thermal properties of complex oxides, specifically in perovskite titanates, is addressed in detail. Thermal conductivity is demonstrated to be a sensitive probe for defects in a system, where processing conditions play a significant role in modulating the crystallinity of the material. The perovskite titanate superlattice system of strontium titanate and calcium titanate is used beat alloy limit. It also shows interesting period thickness dependent thermal properties. The possible origin of this effect is briefly discussed and future directions for this research is also elaborated in detail.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional metal-oxide materials exhibit many intriguing phenomena and attract the intensive research in condensed matter physics as well as materials science. Furthermore, the metal-oxide-based heterostructures demonstrate unusual low-dimensional effects due the symmetry breaking at the interface. I have studied several low dimensional heterostructures from the theoretical and computational perspectives. I have developed a multiscale simulation framework, based on density functional theory that covers the microscopic (~ 10−9 m), mesoscopic (~ 10−8 m) and macroscopic (~ 10−7 m) length scale. The first heterointerface I discuss is Si/EuO. Using density functional theory, I demonstrate how the interfacial oxidation influences the band alignment between the Si substrate and EuO, which is essential for the EuO applications in spintronic devices. The second system is the two-dimension electron gas at the oxygen deficient SrTiO3/EuO interface in the BaTiO3/SrTiO3/EuO heterostructure. I demonstrate that the spontaneous polarization in BaTiO3 can influence the intrinsic electric field across SrTiO3/EuO and control the location of the two-dimensional electron gas in either SrTiO3 side or EuO side. The switchable functionality due to the presence of BaTiO3 offers a promising way to control spin polarized carriers in spintronic devices. Next, I focus on the magnetoelectric effect at the BaTiO3/Ni interface and demonstrate that compared to bulk multiferroic materials, artificially engineered interface structures have much larger magnetoelectric coupling coefficients due to the symmetry breaking at the interface. The fourth system I study is the BaSnO3-based quantum well. By utilizing the intersubband transitions, the BaSnO3-based quantum well structure has high nonlinear optical susceptibility as well as broad optical spectral range, from THz to near visible light region, which has promising applications as nonlinear light source in photonic integrated circuit. The fifth system discussed in this thesis is the epitaxial BaTiO3 films deposited on different substrates. Compared with the bulk material, the behavior of thin films of BaTiO3 is different due to the complicated boundary conditions. To describe a thin film, I use phase field simulations implemented with a finite element method. The simulations are able to reveal the complex domain morphology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconductors are at the heart of modern living. Almost everything we do, be it work, travel, communication, or entertainment, all depend on some feature of semiconductor technology. Comprehensive Semiconductor Science and Technology, Six Volume Set captures the breadth of this important field, and presents it in a single source to the large audience who study, make, and exploit semiconductors. Previous attempts at this achievement have been abbreviated, and have omitted important topics. Written and Edited by a truly international team of experts, this work delivers an objective yet cohesive global review of the semiconductor world. The work is divided into three sections. The first section is concerned with the fundamental physics of semiconductors, showing how the electronic features and the lattice dynamics change drastically when systems vary from bulk to a low-dimensional structure and further to a nanometer size. Throughout this section there is an emphasis on the full understanding of the underlying physics. The second section deals largely with the transformation of the conceptual framework of solid state physics into devices and systems which require the growth of extremely high purity, nearly defect-free bulk and epitaxial materials. The last section is devoted to exploitation of the knowledge described in the previous sections to highlight the spectrum of devices we see all around us. Provides a comprehensive global picture of the semiconductor world Each of the work's three sections presents a complete description of one aspect of the whole Written and Edited by a truly international team of experts
