Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed look at high-lift aerodynamics, which deals with the aerodynamic behavior of lift augmentation means from various approaches. After an introductory chapter, the book discusses the physical limits of lift generation, giving the lift generation potential. It then explains what is needed for an aircraft to fly safely by analyzing the high-lift-related requirements for certifying an aircraft. Aircraft needs are also analyzed to improve performance during takeoff, approach, and landing. The book discusses in detail the applied means to increase the lift coefficient by either passive and active high-lift systems. It includes slotless and slotted high-lift flaps, active and passive vortex generating devices, boundary and circulation control, and powered lift. Describing methods that are used to evaluate and design high-lift systems in an aerodynamic sense, the book briefly covers numerical as well as experimental simulation methods. It also includes a chapter on the aerodynamic design of high-lift systems. FEATURES Provides an understanding of the physics of flight during takeoff and landing from aerodynamics to flight performance and from simulation to design Discusses the physical limits of lift generation, giving the lift generation potential Concentrates on the specifics of high-lift aerodynamics to provide a first insight Analyzes aircraft needs to improve performance during takeoff, approach, and landing Focuses on civil transport aircraft applications but also includes the associated physics that apply to all aircraft This book is intended for graduate students in aerospace programs studying advanced aerodynamics and aircraft design. It also serves as a professional reference for practicing aerospace and mechanical engineers who are working on aircraft design issues related to takeoff and landing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from a box-shaped vehicle (ref. 15) indicate that substantial differences sometimes exist between the drag characteristics of highway-sized rolling vehicles and similarly shaped subscale models. In light of these findings, and because high volume box-like shapes are aerodynamically inefficient, further work has been done with modified versions of the vehicle described in reference 15. The modifications consisted of rounding the horizontal and vertical corners of the front of the vehicle, rounding these corners on the rear of the vehicle, sealing the bottom of the chassis with a full-length fairing and then using a 3/4-length underbody fairing. Drag results from these configurations are compared with the reference 15 data for the vehicle with all corners square and vertical corners rounded. Test velocities ranged up to 65 miles per hour and the corresponding Reynolds numbers ranged up to 1 x 107 based on vehicle length. A simple coast-down technique was used to define the drag.

A companion volume to "Practical Intake Aerodynamic Design," this important text considers the problem of airflow, both internal and external to air intake, as applied to civil and military aircraft. It covers the aerodynamics of subsonic and supersonic intakes in real flows, maintaining a progression through the transonic range. Also considered is the joint perspective of the airframe designer and the propulsion specialist in practical cases. Readers will gain insight into the fluid mechanics behind the deceleration of air from free stream to engine velocity, and an understanding of air compression and external drag in extensively revised chapters reflecting progress in the field. More than 300 drawings and diagrams help to illustrate the points defined throughout the book. Copublished with Blackwell Science Ltd. Book excerpt: The depletion of global fossil fuel reserves combined with mounting environmental concerns has served to focus attention on the development of ecologically compatible and renewable alternative sources of energy. Wind energy, with its impressive growth rate of 40% over the last five years, is the fastest growing alternate source of energy in the world since its purely economic potential is complemented by its great positive environmental impact. The wind turbine, whether it may be a Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) or a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT), offers a practical way to convert the wind energy into electrical or mechanical energy. Although this book focuses on the aerodynamic design and performance of VAWTs based on the Darrieus concept, it also discusses the comparison between HAWTs and VAWTs, future trends in design and the inherent socio-economic and environmental friendly aspects of wind energy as an alternate source of energy.

Book excerpt: This book presents the results of a European-Chinese collaborative research project, Manipulation of Reynolds Stress for Separation Control and Drag Reduction (MARS), including an analysis and discussion of the effects of a number of active flow control devices on the discrete dynamic components of the turbulent shear layers and Reynolds stress. From an application point of view, it provides a positive and necessary step to control individual structures that are larger in scale and lower in frequency compared to the richness of the temporal and spatial scales in turbulent separated flows.
