Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two chemical reactions given by N2O4 + M = 2NO2 + M = 2NO + O2 + M, where M represents the inert carrier gases argon or nitrogen, were studied. The experiments were carried out in a temperature controlled shock tube and a light absorption technique permitted the time dependent concentration of the species NO2 to be determined. For shock strengths where the temperature did not exceed 400K only the first chemical reaction took place. Stronger shock waves excited both chemical reactions with temperatures up to 2100K, and for this reason, flow fields with two nonequilibrium modes could be investigated. Since the relaxation times of these two reactions were different by about three orders of magnitude, they could be experimentally uncoupled. A study of the reaction mechanisms and rate constants for both reactions was carried out. At shock strengths exciting only the first chemical reaction the complete picture of a non-equilibrium flow field with only one nonequilibrium mode could be investigated. In this situation, the shock strengths were varied from weak, fully dispersed waves to strong, partly dispersed waves. (Author).

Book excerpt: The harmonic oscillator rigid-rotator model has been used to calculate the relaxation region behind a shock wave in carbon dioxide. Finite relaxation rates for the three different vibrational modes and two dissociation reactions are included. Models for the coupling between the vibrational relaxation and the dissociation process are based on the assumption that dissociation can proceed from any vibrational level with equal probability. Two different models for the vibrational excitation have been examined. Solutions have been obtained for the interdependent fluid-flow, chemical rate, and vibrational relaxation-rate equations incorporating estimated rate coefficients. Results are presented in the form of flow-field profiles for density, pressure, translational and vibrational temperatures, and species concentrations. The effects of vibrational excitation, vibration-dissociation coupling, and energy exchange between the vibrational modes are investigated. The effect of vibrational relaxation and vibration-dissociation coupling is much stronger in CO2 with three different vibrational modes than in diatomic gases with only a single mode. The results of this study show that the effect of coupled vibrational relaxation and dissociation can sometimes alter the flow-field profiles by a factor of 2 compared to similar calculations without such coupling. For vibrational relaxation the results indicate that the shock-wave profiles depend primarily on the rate at which the translational energy is fed into internal modes and not so strongly on the energy distribution among the modes.

The analysis is based on a set of oblique shock relations which are generalized to include an arbitrary degree of nonequilibrium vibration, dissociation or ionization ahead of and/or behind the shock front. The frozen and equilibrium post-shock gas properties in air vs the ambient atom mass fraction and dissociation energy are presented at shock velocites ranging from 15,000 to 30,000 fps for normal and oblique hypersonic shock waves. Some of the potential effects of predissociation on the intervening relaxation process are briefly examined. Comparison is made with the properties behind geometrically-similar shock waves in a perfect undissociated ambient gas, independently of the preshock chemical history, for either the same shock velocity or the same total enthalpy. Significant changes in the post-shock density ratio, temperature, dissociation and ionization can occur if 10% or more of the total energy is tied up in preshock dissociation. Sharp reductions in the usual differences between the frozen and equilibrium properties associated with endothermic post-shock relaxation are observed when 50% or more of the total enthalpy is in preshock dissociation.
