Book excerpt: The work examines the strengthening effect of the ion exchange method of chemical tempering on a macroflaw in glass. Use of a macroflaw allows a quantitative fracture mechanics analysis of the amount of strengthening. Precracked soda-lime glass specimens were treated for various lengths of time in a potassium nitrate salt bath held at lengths of time in a potassium nitrate salt bath held at 365C. The behavior of the macroflaw while being treated and at fracture was closely observed. The strain energy release rate, G sub c, and the fracture toughness, K sub c, were found by using the double cantilever cleavage technique of measuring fracture surface energies. The average strengthening which occurred at this temperature was found to be almost linear with time with a maximum increase of G sub c of approximately 300 per cent at twenty-four hours. The diffusion of ions was determined to be inward from the sides of the flaw rather than across the entire flaw tip. (Author).

Book excerpt: The work examines the strengthening effect of the ion exchange method of chemical tempering on two specific types of macroflaws, a thermally blunted crack and a sawcut, in soda-lime glass. The use of these macroflaws permitted a quantitative fracture mechanics analysis of the amount of strengthening produced, and a greater access for ion exchange at the flaw tip then could be afforded by a sharp crack. The specimens were treated for various lengths of time in a potassium nitrate bath at 365C. A double cantilever cleavage technique of measuring fracture surface energy was used to find G sub c, the strain energy release rate. The average increase in G sub c was found to be roughly linear reaching a maximum level of approximately 200% at twelve hours of treatment for the blunted crack specimen type, while a similar maximum of approximately 200% was reached at six hours of treatment for the sawcut specimen type. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by TPRC at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemina tion phases of the activity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we have concluded that it will be in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by a well-known publishing house to assure improved service and better communication. Hence, effective with this Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences will be disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. As we embark on this new partnership with Plenum, we also initiate a new venture in that this important annual reference work now covers Canadian universities as well as those in the United States. We are sure that this broader base will greatly enhance the value of these volumes.

Book excerpt: The present study focused on the effect of surface flaws on ion-exchange strengthening of soda-lime silicate (SLS) glass. Flaws produced by Vickers indentations, scratching or particle impact were investigated. MOR data were determined and SEM techniques were used to obtain images of the ion-exchange profile around large flaws after ion-exchange and to determine if the ion-exchange medium penetrated and remained in the cracks. The resulting MOR data indicated that even deep indentation surface flaws strengthened during the initial treatments (1 hour at 400) reaching a maximum, then decreasing for additional treatment times, (16 hours) before again strengthening at long times. It was further shown that this effect is a function of flaw size. For indentation flaw depths less than about 25 microns, samples strengthen continuously with time. Additional experiments, including post-fracture SEM studies of the indentation crack surfaces were aimed at determining the origin of this effect. Results indicate that the anomalous MOR behavior was not caused by stress relaxations during the ion-exchange treatment or by contamination in the molten salt ion-exchange liquid within the crack, or by stress relaxation during the pre-ion-exchange heat treatment. However, the exact mechanism of the anomalous behavior was not determined. The SEM images proved that the ion-exchange medium does enter the flaws and allow ion-exchange to occur even near or at the crack tip. It is also shown that the ion-exchange medium does stay on the flaw surfaces after processing, cleaning and testing to failure. This may have important implications for the static fatigue behavior of chemically strengthened glass and suggests possible simple methods for reducing fatigue in all materials subject to the effect.

This study uses Infrared Spectroscopy (IR) techniques to compare structural changes in the surface of the glass for glasses poled in both a humid environment and an inert environment. The objectives of this thesis were to determine whether and how the presence of water vapor in the environment affect the surface structure of soda-lime glass during poling. Samples were poled in humid (H2O), inert (N2), and deuterated water vapor (D2O) environments for 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 minutes at 200 C and at an applied voltage of 2 kV. The poled samples were analyzed by SR-IR (specular reflectance) and ATR-IR (attenuated total reflectance) which gave structural information about both the silicon oxygen network and the presence of hydrous species at the surface. Based on the presence of hydrous species in the subsurface region of samples poled in humid environments and the difference in the prevalence of Si-O-Si (bridging oxygen) and Si-O-(non-bridging oxygen) groups over time between inert and humid poled samples, this thesis confirmed that the environment during poling effects surface structure of the soda-lime glass. The SR-IR and ATR-IR spectra suggested different mechanisms for structural rearrangement and likely different charge carriers in the glass based on environment. The next steps in this research would be to further investigate and confirm how exactly these two mechanisms differ.

Results of research refer to the refractive index profiles of planar waveguides produced by the ion exchange method in various glasses. All refractive index profiles were determined by measuring the effective refractive indices of the waveguide modes. In the first part of this chapter the processes of electrodiffusion doping soda-lime glass with silver ions has been described. The second part contains a description of the two measurement methods allowing to estimate the equilibrium concentration basing on the example of the concentration of sodium in soda-lime glass. The third part describes the phenomenon of stress birefringence arising in borosilicate BK-7 glass doped with potassium ions K+. The fourth section presents the results of research on the real-time control of ion exchange diffusion processes. The results confirming the validity of this idea with examples of soda-lime glass (Menzel-Gläser company), BK-7 (Schott company) and Pyrex (Borosilicate 33 of Corning company) doped with Ag+ silver ions and K+ potassium ions are also presented here.

Book excerpt: Leaching of alkalis from glass is widely recognized as an important mechanism in the initial stages of glass-water interactions. Pioneering experimental studies [1-3] nearly thirty-five years ago established that alkali (designated as M) are lost to solution more rapidly than network-forming cations. The overall chemical reaction describing the process can be written as: {triple_bond}Si-O-M + H --> {triple_bond}Si-OH + M+ (1) or {triple_bond}Si-O-M + H3O+ --> {triple_bond}Si-OH + M+ + H2O. (2) Doremus and coworkers [4-7] fashioned a quantitative model where M+ ions in the glass are exchanged for counter-diffusing H3O+ or H+. Subsequent investigations [8], which have relied heavily on reaction layer analysis, recognized the role of H2O molecules in the alkali-exchange process, without minimizing the importance of charged hydrogen species. Beginning in the 1980s, however, interest in M+-H+ exchange reactions in silicate glasses diminished considerably because important experimental observations showed that network hydrolysis and dissolution rates were principally controlled by the chemical potential difference between the glass and solution (chemical affinity) [9]. For nuclear waste glasses, formation of alteration products or secondary phases that remove important elements from solution, particularly Si, was found to have very large impacts on glass dissolution rates [10,11]. Consequently, recent work on glass/water interactions has focused on understanding this process and incorporating it into models [12]. The ion-exchange process has been largely ignored because it has been thought to be a short duration, secondary or tertiary process that had little or no bearing on long-term corrosion or radionuclide release rates from glasses [13]. The only significant effect identified in the literature that is attributed to alkali ion exchange is an increase in solution pH in static laboratory tests conducted at high surface area-to-volume ratios [14,15]. Renewed interest in alkali ion exchange reactions has come about because of interest in development of durable Na-rich silicate glasses for immobilization of low-activity waste (LAW) at Hanford, Washington [16] and high-level wastes in China [17]. In reactive transport simulations of a LAW glass disposed in a shallow subsurface facility, Chen, McGrail, and Engel [18] showed that ion-exchange reactions increased the radionuclide release rate by over two orders of magnitude when compared with simulations where ion exchange was excluded. Sheng, Luo, and Tang [17] conducted static tests in a simulated groundwater and showed that alkali ion exchange was the dominant release mechanism over a large temperature range. Although the significance of alkali ion exchange reactions in long-term disposal system performance has now been recognized, the fundamental processes and mechanisms controlling the exchange reactions are still remarkably poorly understood, especially with regard to how glass structure affects alkali ion exchange kinetics. Experimental studies of Na release from various simple silicate glasses are numerous [19-23]. However, in all previous studies of which we are aware, no attempt was made to distinguish between M+ release through alkali exchange versus matrix dissolution. The release rate of alkali in all of the early work was convoluted by contributions from matrix dissolution, which dominates in dilute solutions. Also, none of the previous studies attempted to define the relationship, if any, between glass structure (composition) and the kinetics of the ion exchange reaction. The motivation behind this Environmental Management Science Project (EMSP) is to develop a better understanding of how glass structure impacts sodium ion exchange so that improved glasses can be developed. Development of low ion-exchange rate glasses may also permit engineers to use higher loadings in nuclear waste glasses, which would result in substantial savings in production and disposal costs. This report summarizes the experimental data, and the interpretation and analysis of this data that was collected over the duration of the project from 1997 to 2001. Three silicate glass systems were investigated: (1) Na2O-Al2O3-SiO2 system, (2) Na2O-B2O3-SiO2 system, and the (3) Na2O-Al2O3-B2O3-HfO2-SiO2 system.

Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine the change in the crack growth parameter, n, as a function of ion-exchange time of soda-lime silicate (SLS) glass. Controlled flaws were introduced into SLS glass plates via Vickers Indentation at a load of 200g and 300g. Samples were heat treated at 200°C to relieve post indentation stresses. Samples ranged from being unstrengthened to 6 hours of chemical strengthening. Dynamic fatigue tests were performed using a ball on ring apparatus at three different loading rates. The resulting data was inconclusive in determining if the crack growth parameter approaches an upper limit as ion-exchange time increases. The crack growth parameter approaches an upper limit as ion-exchange time increases. The crack growth parameter for 200g indents of unstrengthened glass in a water environment was 10.2 and increased to 53.1 after 2.5 hours of treatment and dropped to 15.5 after 6 hours of treatment. There was similar pattern seen in samples with a 300 g indent. To explore the effect of the lack of radial cracks on the failure load the samples were viewed under a microscope to determine if radial cracks had formed. MOR results showed that there was a significant deviation from samples having radial crack.
