Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete revision of the first edition, this book presents the most current concepts of chiropractic diagnostic workup, injury mechanisms, patient management, and prognosis of cervical and soft tissue injuries caused by automobile crashes. It is a comprehensive overview of all relevant issues facing clinicians in private practice. This edition includes five new chapters and includes real world examples that can be used in everyday practice. With an entire section devoted to automobile collision data, crash dynamics, and human tolerance and injury factors, it's extensively referenced from the clinical and automotive crash literature. The second edition contains 5 new chapters that cover:- Emerging concepts in treating chronic whiplash pain has been added to explore some of the newer forms of treating the chronic patient.- Crash speeds and injury risk. This chapter is unique in that it explores various international publications that evaluate the risk. Attempts to dispel myths about crash speeds and gives a forensic overview of the application of these studies.- Have split the original chapter on injury mechanisms into 4 chapters in the second edition. Chapter 15 focuses specifically into the arena of general applications of biomechanics relating to automobile crashes. Chapters 16-18 provide individual chapters on frontal, side, and rear crash biomechanics. These chapters explore the individual complexities of the varying types of crashes.- Human factors that influence injury and recovery has been added as a separate chapter to provide more detailed information to the clinician. In addition, the authors have focused on adding more information about the sensitivity and specificity of various orthopedic and neurological tests, and have further explored the types of conditions that chiropractors treat. To view the list of contributors to this edition, click on the additional information button below.Christopher J. Book excerpt: Approximately 1.3 million people die each year on the world's roads, and between 20 and 50 million sustain non-fatal injuries. The Global status report on road safety is the first broad assessment of the road safety situation in 178 countries, using data drawn from a standardized survey. The results show that road traffic injuries remain an important public health problem, particularly for low-income and middle-income countries. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists make up almost half of those killed on the roads, highlighting the need for these road users to be given more attention in road safety programmes. The results suggest that in many countries road safety laws need to be made more comprehensive while enforcement should be strengthened. The Global status report on road safety results clearly show that significantly more action is needed to make the world's roads safer. [Ed.]

This book was released on 1979 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the fatalities on the National Crash Severity Study (NCSS) of towaway, passenger car accidents. The analysis is in three stages. First, NCSS fatalities are compared to the fatally-injured occupants reported on the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS), as a tool for evaluating the representativeness of the NCSS data. Second, estimates of the probability of fatality for NCSS are computed for various conditions, such as the incidence of fire and the sex of the occupant. Third, in cases where two factors are highly correlated, such as is the case for rollover and ejection, modeling techniques are used to help quantify the effects of each variable. The results of this study suggest the following preliminary conclusions: (1) FARS and NCSS have similar distributions of many variables. These include urbanization, size of vehicles, type damage to vehicle, occupant seating location, sex, and restraint use. Differences resulting from the investigative methods and geographical areas of the two studies are identified and assessed. (2) On the NCSS file, many variables are associated with a much higher rate of fatality. These include (a) at the accident level: the number of vehicles involved, urbanization, and the incidence of fire or explosion; (b) at the vehicle level: the change of velocity at impact, the direction of the impacting force, and vehicle damage area; and (c) at the occupant level: seating position, age, sex, ejection, entrapment, and restraint use. (3) Rollover and ejection, which often occur together, are each independently associated with a higher rate of fatality. Of the two factors, ejection appears more related to a higher probability of fatality than does rollover alone. NCSS is the best currently-available source of accident data for analyzing injury-related factors. This report attempts to describe the accidents occurring in the NCSS sampling areas, and suggest ideas for further research.

It describes and discusses mathematical descriptions of the process of a motor vehicle crash and indicates the various factors that impact on collision models. It tackles also vehicle stability and shows how the forces generated in crashes result in different extents of post-accident repair. Mathematical models that simulate vehicle stability data are compared with those of real vehicles. Practical uses of the models are explained to readers. The book will be of interest to researchers in transport and vehicle technology well as automotive industry professionals.

The book is ideal as a reference, with an approach that's simple, clear, and easy to comprehend. As the mathematical and software-based modelling and analysis of vehicle crash scenarios have not been systematically investigated, this is an ideal source for further study. Numerous academic and industry studies have analyzed vehicle safety during physical crash scenarios, thus material responses during crashes serve as one of the most important performance indices for mechanical design problems. In addition to mathematical methodologies, this book provides thorough coverage of computer simulations, software-based modeling, and an analysis of methods capable of providing more flexibility. - Unifies existing and emerging concepts concerning vehicle crash dynamics - Provides a series of latest results in mathematical-based modeling from front and oblique perspectives - Contains almost everything needed to capture the essence of model development and analysis for vehicle crash - Includes both numerical and simulation results given in each chapter - Presents a comprehensive, up-to-date reference that encourages further study
