Book excerpt: A combined experimental-theoretical investigation has been made to study the flow fields and store loads in the proximity of a triple ejection rack mounted on an inboard wing pylon of an F-4C airplane. The experimental investigation, made in the 4-Foot Transonic Wind Tunnel at AEDC, included attached load measurements on models of a Mark-83 bomb with and without fins, as well as load measurements on a sting-mounted (CTS) model of the bottom store in the proximity of the rack. In addition, flow-field measurements were made in the proximity of the TER. Systematic data were taken in an airplane build-up sequence including additions of the wing pylon, rack, one shoulder store and two shoulder stores from M infinity equals 0.6 to 0.95. Strong interference effects were found within less than one store diameter of the rack which greatly affected the values of the attached loads. Systematic comparisons were made between experimental and the predictions of a store separation computer program for induced flow fields and store loads due to addition of the pylon, rack, and shoulder stores. For the effects of the rack and shoulder stores improvements are required in the computer program to obtain better load predictions for the store near the attached position. Specific suggestions on how to effect these improvements are made.

This approach uses experimentally measured interference flow field data coupled with store free stream aerodynamic coefficients. Presently, the flow field about the inboard triple ejector rack loaded with M-117 bombs at Mach 0.85 on the F-4 aircraft is being used to predict the trajectory of other stores launched from the inboard triple ejector rack at subsonic and transonic Mach numbers. Sample comparisons of trajectories produced by the captive trajectory system are presented. This technique allows calculation of the trajectory until the store impacts on the ground. Sample miss distances caused by the interference flow field calculated using the flow angularity technique are presented for the M-117 bomb. (Author).

The tests were conducted in the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility (VKF), Tunnel A, at nominal Mach numbers of 1.5, 1.76, 2.0, and 2.5 at a nominal free-stream Reynolds number of 4 x 10 to 6th power per foot. The test program involved three phases, namely flow-field surveys using a cone probe rake to determine local flow-field angles and velocity, pressure distributions on the store as it separated from a parent body, and six-component force and moment data on the store. The tests were conducted at angles of attack of zero and five degrees. This document contains a detailed description of the calibration procedure for the 20-deg half-angle cone probes and the method used to evaluate the local flow-field properties from the cone probe surface pressure and pitot pressure measurements. Also included is a comparison of integrated pressure data with the force and moment data obtained on the storebody by a balance. (Author).
