Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present a search for direct CP violation in B{sup ±} 2!J/[psi]K{sup ±}[pi]{sup ±} decays. The event sample is selected from 2.8 fb−1 of p{bar p} collisions recorded by D0 experiment in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The charge asymmetry A{sub CP}(B 2!J/[psi]K) = +0.0075 ± 0.0061(stat.) {+-} 0.0027(syst.) is obtained using a sample of approximately 40 thousand B{sup {+-}} 2!J/[psi]K{sup {+-}} decays. The achieved precision is of the same level as the expected deviation predicted by some extensions of the standard model. They also measured the charge asymmetry A{sub CP}(B+ 2!J/[psi][pi]+) = -0.09 {+-} 0.08(stat.){+-}0.03(syst.).

Book excerpt: The author reviews basic aspects of the phenomenology of CP violation in the decays of K and B mesons. In particular he discusses the commonly used classification of CP violation--CP violation in the mass matrix, in the interference of mixing with decay, and in the decay amplitude itself--and the related notions of direct and indirect CP violation. These concepts are illustrated with explicit examples. The author also emphasizes the highlights of this field including the clean observables B(K{sub L} → [pi]°[nu]{anti {nu}}) and A{sub CP} (B → J/[Psi]K{sub S}). The latter quantity serves to demonstrate the general features of large, mixing induced CP violation in B decays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the final measurement of the flavor-mixing phase in decays of strange-bottom mesons (B_s) into J/psi and phi mesons performed in high-energy proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the Collider Experiment at Fermilab. Interference occurs between direct decays and decays following virtual particle-antiparticle transitions (B_s-antiB_s). The phase difference between transition amplitudes (“mixing phase”) is observable and extremely sensitive to contributions from non-standard-model particles or interactions that may be very hard to detect otherwise – a fact that makes the precise measurement of the B_s mixing phase one of the most important goals of particle physics. The results presented include a precise determination of the mixing phase and a suite of other important supplementary results. All measurements are among the most precise available from a single experiment and provide significantly improved constraints on the phenomenology of new particles and interactions.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of CP-violation in weak interactions, discovered in 1964 in decays of neutral kaons, receives a simple and elegant explanation in the Standard Model with three generations of quarks. Indeed, in this model the common source of CP-asymmetry phenomena is represented by a simple complex phase in the unitary matrix (the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix) describing the charged weak couplings of the quarks. This simple scheme has never received an accurate validation, because the phenomenological parameters determined from measurements of CP-violation in kaons decays are related to the fundamental parameters of the theory in a complex way, sensitive to large theoretical uncertainties. On the contrary, decays of neutral B mesons like B{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi} K{sub S}{sup 0} represent a unique laboratory to test the predictions of the theory because they are expected to show significant CP-violation effects, the magnitude of which is cleanly related to the Standard Model parameters. Thus experimental facilities have been built with the purpose of performing extensive studies of B decays. The BABAR experiment is operating at one of these facilities, at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. It is collecting data at the PEP-II asymmetric e{sup +}e{sup -} collider (E{sub e{sup -}} = 9.0 GeV; E{sub e{sup +}} = 3.1 GeV), a high-luminosity accelerator machine (L = 3 x 10{sup 33} cm{sup -2}s{sup -1}). The center-of-mass energy (10.58 GeV) of the e{sup +}e{sup -} system at PEP-II allows resonant production of the {Upsilon}(4S), a b{bar b} bound state, which decays almost exclusively in a B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} or a B{sup +}B{sup -} pair. A high-acceptance detector, projected and built by a wide international collaboration, detects and characterizes the decay products of the B mesons. From the analysis of the data collected during the first two years of operation, the BABAR collaboration has established CP-violation in decays of neutral B mesons at the 4.1{sigma} level. Besides the primary goal of CP-violation studies, the high luminosity of PEP-II, coupled with the high acceptance of the BABAR detector, allows competitive studies of the properties of a wide set of B decay modes. In particular, measurements of non-leptonic decays are extremely useful to understand the dynamics of the non-perturbative strong interactions involved in these processes. In this thesis a study of the non-leptonic decay mode B{sup {+-}} {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup {+-}} is presented.

Book excerpt: We point out the strong correlation between the CP-violating asymmetries in the decays B{sup o} →?K{sub s} and B{sup o} →??− that is predicted by the Kobayashi-Maskawa model. This results in a very restricted allowed region for the asymmetries, and so their measurement will provide a powerful test of the standard model. To show how new physics may give very different results, we look at the predictions of a simple model where both the standard model and superweak contributions to the K{sup o} and B{sup o} mass matrices coexist. We find that, for possible values of the parameters, practically any values are allowed for the asymmetries.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the measurement of the direct CP violation in the b → sc$\bar{c}$ transition using the decay B+ → J/[Psi]K+, and in the b → dc$\bar{c}$ transition using the decay B+ → J/[Psi][pi]+. The decays of B+ mesons are reconstructed in approximately 2.8 fb-1 of data recorded by D0 detector in 2002-2007 during Run II of Fermilab Tevatron collider. Using the unbinned likelihood fit, a signal of 40,222 ± 242 of B+ → J/[Psi]K+ and 1,578 ± 119 of B+ → J/[Psi][pi]+ events is obtained. The corresponding direct CP violation asymmetries are measured to be ACP(B+ → J/[Psi](1S)K+) = +0.0077 ± 0.0061(stat.) ± 0.0027(syst.), and ACP(B+ → J/[Psi](1S)[pi]+) = - 0.089 ± 0.081(stat.) ± 0.028(syst.). The result on ACP (B+ → J/[Psi](1S)K+) is consistent with the 2007 world average and is the most precise measurement of this asymmetry, with uncertainty approaching the level of the Standard Model prediction. The result on ACP (B+ → J/[Psi](1S)[pi]+) constitutes the first measurement of this asymmetry at the hadron collider, with uncertainty at the level of the 2007 world average. The measurement presented in this thesis has become possible due to the sophisticated online and offline tracking/vertexing implemented at D0, and the regular reversal of the polarities of the D0 detector magnets.

Book excerpt: In a universe dominated by matter, the source of CP violation may explain one of the greatest mysteries in particle physics: what happened to the antimatter? The Standard Model successfully describes CP violation in the B+ and Bd0 systems, yet insufficiently accounts for the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. The Standard Model predicts a small value of CP violation in the Bs0 meson system, which has only recently been experimentally tested. A measurement of large, anomalous CP violation in the Bs0 system would be a clear indication of new physics sources beyond the Standard Model. This dissertation describes a study of CP violation in approximately 2000 Bs0 → J/[Psi][Phi] decays reconstructed in a 2.8 fb-1 data sample collected by the D0 Run II detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. This data was provided by p$\bar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV delivered by the Tevatron accelerator between April 2002 and August 2007. Flavor-tagged Bs0 → J/[Psi]([mu]+[mu]-)[Phi](K+K-) decays and an angular analysis are used to study the time evolution of the final state angular distributions. From this analysis, we measure the width difference between the heavy and light mass eigenstates, BsL and BsH , to be [Delta][Gamma]s = 0.19 ± 0.07 and the CP-violating phase [Phi]s = -0.57-0.30+0.24.
