Along with a review of PLNC architectures, this brief examines new challenges brought by the special structure of bi-directional two-hop transmissions that are different from the traditional point-to-point systems and unidirectional relay systems. The authors discuss the channel estimation strategies over typical fading scenarios, including frequency flat fading, frequency selective fading and time selective fading, as well as future research directions. Chapters explore the performance of the channel estimation strategy and optimal structure of training sequences for each scenario. Besides the analysis of channel estimation strategies, the book also points out the necessity of revisiting other signal processing issues for the PLNC system. Channel Estimation of Physical Layer Network Coding Systems is a valuable resource for researchers and professionals working in wireless communications and networks. Advanced-level students studying computer science and electrical engineering will also find the content helpful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three parts to this thesis. In the first part, we study the channel estimation problem in frequency-selective multi-user (MU) multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where, a time-domain semi-blind channel estimation technique is proposed. Compared to frequency-domain, the time-domain channel estimation requires fewer parameters be estimated. Importantly, the time-domain estimation has enough samples for an accurate channel estimate. Given this many samples in the time-domain, the proposed channel estimation technique obtains a better estimate of the channel. Here, there is no assumption on orthogonality of users' channels, knowledge of large-scale fading coefficients, and the orthogonality between the training symbols of the users in all cells. The second part of the thesis studies the channel estimation problem in correlated massive MIMO systems with a reduced number of radio-frequency (RF) chains. Leveraging the knowledge of channel correlation matrices, we propose to estimate the channel entries in its eigen-domain. Due to the limited number of RF chains, channel estimation is typically performed in multiple time slots. Using the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) criterion, the optimal precoder and combiner in each time slot are aligned to transmitter and receiver eigen-directions, respectively. Meanwhile, the optimal power allocation for each training time slots is obtained via a waterfilling-type expression. In the final part, we study the downlink channel estimation for frequency-division-duplex (FDD) massive MIMO systems. Acquiring downlink channel state information in these systems is challenging due to the large training and feedback overhead. Motivated by the partial reciprocity of uplink and downlink channels, we first estimate the frequency-independent channel parameters, i.e., the path gains, delays, angles-of-arrivals (AoAs) and angles-of-departures (AoDs), via uplink training, since these parameters are common in both uplink and downlink. Then, the frequency-specific channel parameters are estimated via downlink training using a very short training signal. To efficiently estimate the channel parameters in the uplink, the underlying distribution of the channel parameters is incorporated as a prior into our estimation algorithm. This distribution is captured using deep generative models (DGMs). The proposed channel estimation technique significantly outperforms the conventional channel estimation techniques in practical ranges of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Book excerpt: In this thesis channel estimation techniques for LTE downlink named Least Square, Minimum Mean Square error and Maximum Likelihood estimation techniques are studied for the pilot symbol based channel estimation. In addition to this the performances of these three channel estimation techniques were also studied by introducing averaging, interpolation and hybrid methods. This work also investigates the complexity of the channel estimation techniques in terms of the number of complex multiplications and by varying the FFT size and number of CP(cyclic prefix). furthermore, the effect of varying the number of antennas at the transmitter and receiver ends, where 2 x 2 and 4 x 4 antenna arrangements are considered as a case studies. The performance of these channel estimation techniques is also studied for EVA standard channel model in LTE. The considered channel model is EVA standard channel model with Doppler shift of 300HZ.

The contributions of this dissertation are as follows: i) An accurate, low-complexity approach to pilot-assisted fast-fading channel estimation for single-carrier modulation with a turbo equalizer and a decoder is proposed. The channel is estimated using a Kalman filter (KF) followed by a zero-phase filter (ZPF) as a smoother. The combination of the ZPF with the KF of the channel estimator makes it possible to reduce the estimation error to near the Wiener bound. ii) A new semi-blind channel estimation technique is introduced for multiple-input-multiple-output channels. Once the channel is estimated using a few pilots, a low-order KF is employed to progressively predict the channel gains for the upcoming blocks. iii) The capacity of radio channels is investigated when iterative channel estimation, data detection, and decoding are employed. By taking the uncertainty in decoded data bits into account, the channel Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) estimator of an iterative receiver with a given pilot ratio is obtained. The derived error value is then used to derive a bound on capacity. It is shown that in slow fading channels, iterative processing provides only a marginal advantage over non-iterative approach to channel estimation. Knowing the capacity gain from iterative processing versus purely pilot-based channel estimation helps a designer to compare the performance of an iterative receiver against a non-iterative one and select the best balance between performance and cost.iv) A Radio channel is characterized by random parameters which can be used to generate shared secret keys by the communicating parties when the channel is estimated. This research studies upper bounds on the rate of the secret keys extractable from iteratively estimated channels. Various realistic scenarios are considered where the transmission is half-duplex and/or the channel is sampled under the Nyquist rate. The effect of channel sampling interval, fading rate and noise on the key rate is demonstrated. The results of this research can be beneficial for the design and analysis of reliable and secure mobile wireless systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Channel Estimation is an essential component in applications such as radar and data communication. In multi path time varying environments, it is necessary to estimate time-shifts, scale-shifts (the wideband equivalent of Doppler-shifts), and the gains/phases of each of the multiple paths. With recent advances in sparse estimation (or ``compressive sensing"), new estimation techniques have emerged which yield more accurate estimates of these channel parameters than traditional strategies. These estimation strategies, however, restrict potential estimates of time-shifts and scale-shifts to a finite set of values separated by a choice of grid spacing. A small grid spacing increases the number of potential estimates, thus lowering the quantization error, but also increases complexity and estimation time. Conversely, a large grid spacing lowers the number of potential estimates, thus lowering the complexity and estimation time, but increases the quantization error. In this thesis, we derive an expression which relates the choice of grid spacing to the mean-squared quantization error. Furthermore, we consider the case when scale-shifts are approximated by Doppler-shifts, and derive a similar expression relating the choice of the grid spacing and the quantization error. Using insights gained from these expressions, we further explore the effects of the choice and grid spacing, and examine when a wideband model can be well approximated by a narrowband model.

Book excerpt: Channel estimation problem is a crucial state of the art research topic that has been addressed in the literature for the past decade. The importance of such research area emerged from the fact that telecommunication scholars are searching for a wireless telecommunication system that provides a minimum error performance yet can utilize the used spectrum efficiently. Channel estimation is a common practice in most of the wireless communication systems to give the receiver an indication about the channel conditions and hence will affect his decision in detecting the transmitted information This thesis will Compare Four methods for Channel estimation problems based in semi-blind approach for MU-MIMO systems; the Rank Revealing QR factorization RRQR, Least square method LS, CAPON method and the Eigenvector method. Performance comparison is based on the Minimum mean square error (MMSE). The introduced method in this thesis is the Eigenvector method, and it's presented in comparison to the first three methods. Compared to the RRQR the Eigenvector is based on a searching function similar to the MUSIC function with the addition of the Eigen values of the null space in the search function.
