Book excerpt: Experimental results and a numerical study were used to investigate the mechanisms critical to the failure of notched graphite/epoxy laminates. Experimental results from the Boeing/NASA ATCAS program were reviewed and reduced to give insight into the growth of damage from the tips of notches in tensile specimens. A finite element model was constructed to model the specimens, and a damaged based modeling approach used to investigate the effects of this damage. Properties of the elements in a region at the notch tips were altered to simulate damage. Matrix failure and fiber failure were modeled by reducing the material properties in these elements. Delaminations were modeled using a 2-D stacked membrane approach. The damage types were impregnated into the finite element model individually and in various combinations, and the changes in the stress and strain distributions in the model examined. Most calculations were linear. A geometrically non-linear model was used to examine buckling observed above and below the notch in large specimens. The experimental results confirmed the importance of the role of progressive damage growing from the notch tip in the failure of the laminate. Such damage can actually increase the strength of the laminate by relieving the stress concentration at the notch tip. The numerical results showed that modeled matrix failure and delaminations had very small effects individually, but significant effects when combined. Fiber failure had a large effect. Only models incorporating severe damage, including delaminations, matrix cracking, and substantial fiber failure, could correlate to the large changes in strain distribution observed to accompany damage in the test specimens. The non-linear analyses replicated the observed buckling above and below the notch. It was found to have a major effect on the stresses near the notch tip. This study shows that it is possible to model the effects of damage on the stress field in a notched composite laminate; that such models are sensitive to modeling details such as interactions of damage types; that the damage observed during tests is severe; and that buckling near the notch tip can have profound effects.

The general objective of this program was to investigate the precise nature of the damage events caused by cyclic (fatigue) loading of composite laminates that are directly related to fracture of those laminates, to develop a conceptual understanding of how those damage events reduce the residual strength of the laminates, and to determine how the collective damage condition following long-term cyclic loading precipitates the final fracture event. The program was conducted in four phases: (1) the development of fatigue damage during long-term cyclic loading was investigated in such a way that the damage events which occur quite late in the fatigue life of the material, just prior to fracture, were identified and characterized; (2) the special contribution and nature of fiber fracture was investigated; (3) the nature of the collective damage condition which precipitates the fracture event under long-term fatigue loading was investigated; (4) a philosophy of fracture in composite laminates following severe damage development due to cyclic loading was developed. A wide variety of destructive and nondestructive experimental evaluation schemes were used in the program, and several analytical efforts were conducted to support the experimental activities.

Book excerpt: Results of an experimental investigation of damage development in T300/5208 graphite epoxy laminates subjected to tension-tension cyclic loading are reported. The concept of laminate stiffness reduction as a damage analogue is shown to be a valuable means of test control and damage interpretation. The relationship between stiffness and number of cycles is shown to be unique for each laminate type studied, each possessing three distinct stages, but markedly different among the laminate types. By using two complementary nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, edge replication and penetrant-enhanced stereo X- ray radiography along with a method for deploying fatigue-damaged specimens, the stages of stiffness reduction were found to correspond variously to the predominance of matrix cracking or delamination or interactions of these matrix damage modes. A number of subordinate matrix damage modes including interior delamination, microcracking, and longitudinal splitting are identified with the matrix cracks which produce them.

Book excerpt: The composite material community has been interested in developing a matrix fiber combination which could improve the ability of a laminate in resisting interlaminate fracture impact loading to a greater degree than in the past and ultimately, improve upon the toughness of the composite material. Recently, a matrix has been manufactured that appears to assist in obtaining these goals. This material is a thermoplastic resin referred to as polyetheretherkeytone (Peek). A review of literature produced very little information related to Gr/Peek. Thus an experimental study reported here-in was conducted to investigate the high temperature strength (tension and compression) of Gr/Peek and Gr/Epoxy laminates with holes. The results were then used to determine the parameters necessary to predict trends incorporating the point stress, average stress failure criteria and the three parameter curve fir criterion. The comparison of predicted and experimental failure stress are shown graphically. The failure modes of Gr/Peek and Gr/Ep are analyzed with the help of electron scanning micrographs. It is seen that an interface degradation exists for Gr/Peek (Polyetheretherkeytone) at higher temperatures. An effect of shear crippling similar to that of Gr/Ep is observed in compression failure of Gr/Peek.
