Book excerpt: Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) is the major experimental method used to investigate the electronic structure of solids. It directly probes the electron-wave-vector dependence of occupied electronic states. The photoemission spectrum is modelled by a spectral function A(k,E) with electron wave vector k and binding energy E which includes electron-electron interactions by a complex self-energy. Bandstructures of metals are often successfully calculated by density-functional theory without self-energy corrections. For certain solids such as the noble metal Cu, the one-electron band-structure picture of density-functional theory agrees very well with the E (k) dispersion obtained ARPES. However for its neighbour in the periodic system, the 3d transition metal Ni, strong effects of electron correlation on core-level and valence-band spectra have been established.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the electronic structure of solids is a basic part of theoretical investigation in physics. Application of investigative techniques requires the solid under investigation to be "periodic." However, this is not always the case. This volume addresses three classes of "non-periodic" solids currently undergoing the most study: alloys, surfaces and clusters. Understanding the electronic structure of these systems is fundamental not only for the basic science, but also constitutes a very important step in various technological aspects, such as tuning their stabilities, chemical and catalytic reactivities and magnetism. Expert practitioners give an up-to-date account of the field with enough detailed background so that even a newcomer can follow the development. The theoretical framework is discussed in addition to the present status of knowledge in the field. Electronic Structure of Alloys, Surfaces and Clusters also includes an extensive bibliography which provides a comprehensive reading list of work on the topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research is focused on the synthesis of new iron-rare-earth magnetic phases which may have significant technological properties. An important aim is to investigate new methods for producing these materials such as melt spinning and sputtering plus specific heat treatments. Studies are made of the relationship between microstructure and properties such as coercivity, spontaneous magnetization, and anisotropy (magnitude and direction) in bulk and thin film samples. Our goal is to understand these relatively complex materials on the basis of fundamental electronic structure, theory is of itinerant magnetism and localized 4f electronic states, and the microstructural effects which control the extrinsic properties. To achieve this a broad range of experiments and calculations are performed. In the following we describe briefly some of our recent accomplishments, with emphasis on work performed in the last six months.

Understanding of its temperature and concentration dependence is a challenging theoretical problem with implications for the design of better materials for permanent magnets and other applications. The origins of the anomalous temperature dependence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in (Fe 1--xCox)2B alloys are elucidated using first-principles calculations within the disordered local moment model. Excellent agreement with experimental data is obtained. Electronic structure calculations are used to examine the magnetic properties of Fe2P-based alloys and the mechanisms through which the Curie temperature and magnetocrystalline anisotropy can be optimized for specific applications. It is found that at elevated temperatures the magnetic interaction in pure Fe2P develops a pronounced two-dimensional character. Co-alloying of Fe2P with Co (or Ni) and Si is suggested as a strategy for maximizing the magnetocrystalline anisotropy above room temperature.

Book excerpt: The book includes all main physical properties of d- and f-transition-metal systems and corresponding theoretical concepts. Special attention is paid to the theory of magnetism and transport phenomena. Some examples of non-traditional questions which are treated in detail in the book: the influence of density of states singularities on electron properties; many-electron description of strong itinerant magnetism; mechanisms of magnetic anisotropy; microscopic theory of anomalous transport phenomena in ferromagnets. Besides considering classical problems of solid state physics as applied to transition metals, modern developments in the theory of correlation effects in d- and f-compounds are considered within many-electron models. The book contains, where possible, a simple physical discussion. More difficult questions are considered in Appendices.

Book excerpt: Materials in a nuclear environment are exposed to extreme conditions of radiation, temperature and/or corrosion, and in many cases the combination of these makes the material behavior very different from conventional materials. This is evident for the four major technological challenges the nuclear technology domain is facing currently: (i) long-term operation of existing Generation II nuclear power plants, (ii) the design of the next generation reactors (Generation IV), (iii) the construction of the ITER fusion reactor in Cadarache (France), (iv) and the intermediate and final disposal of nuclear waste. In order to address these challenges, engineers and designers need to know the properties of a wide variety of materials under these conditions and to understand the underlying processes affecting changes in their behavior, in order to assess their performance and to determine the limits of operation. Comprehensive Nuclear Materials, Second Edition, Seven Volume Set provides broad ranging, validated summaries of all the major topics in the field of nuclear material research for fission as well as fusion reactor systems. Attention is given to the fundamental scientific aspects of nuclear materials: fuel and structural materials for fission reactors, waste materials, and materials for fusion reactors. The articles are written at a level that allows undergraduate students to understand the material, while providing active researchers with a ready reference resource of information. Most of the chapters from the first Edition have been revised and updated and a significant number of new topics are covered in completely new material. During the ten years between the two editions, the challenge for applications of nuclear materials has been significantly impacted by world events, public awareness, and technological innovation. Materials play a key role as enablers of new technologies, and we trust that this new edition of Comprehensive Nuclear Materials has captured the key recent developments. Critically reviews the major classes and functions of materials, supporting the selection, assessment, validation and engineering of materials in extreme nuclear environments Comprehensive resource for up-to-date and authoritative information which is not always available elsewhere, even in journals Provides an in-depth treatment of materials modeling and simulation, with a specific focus on nuclear issues Serves as an excellent entry point for students and researchers new to the field
