Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lay persons in the church might be forgiven for imagining that the book of Revelation cannot be understood. There are many different interpretive schemes proposed, and hundreds of variations within those schemes. But the reader who is willing to spend the time will find real treasures in the study of this book, and Paul Himes has provided an excellent guide to some of the most important passages, as he looks at the messages to the seven churches, and even more importantly at the One who is sending those messages, based on the vision in the first chapter and the ways in which the churches are addressed. Dr. Himes provides key background information and then takes a serious look at the details of the text, but he does so in a way that is clear and that points the reader to ways of approaching the text more seriously on his or her own. For those who want to follow the trail further, the footnotes are extensive. Since, as the author tells us on page 5, “... one cannot begin to grapple with the eschatology of Revelation until one has submitted to the Christology of Revelation” this book provides an excellent point of entry for someone who wants to take a new and refreshing look at this important book. Here one can study the Christ of revelation (Christology), the church He ordained (ecclesiology), and go from there to the purpose and destination He has for that church (eschatology).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Prayer changes things." It's a common saying, and too often Christian discussion of prayer deals only with how we can change other things and other people through prayer. But what if prayer is much more than we imagine? What if it is also the means of correcting our relationship to the Creator and at the same time of changing our relationships with one another? Perhaps prayer can ultimately help transform our theology, what we believe about God, into character and action. In Ultimate Allegiance, Dr. Bob Cornwall takes us to the Lord's Prayer, a short and simple prayer that is well-known and often recited. But in each of its major petitions, he finds deep meaning that challenges us to think and to change. In fact, this prayer of Jesus brings us to the ultimate question of just where we should place our ultimate allegiance. This book can be read individually but is designed especially for small group or church studies, especially in conjunction with the related study guide.

Book excerpt: With this volume on Paul's Letter to the Galatians, Dr Bruce Epperly, author of Philippians: A Participatory Study Guide, Finding God in Suffering: A Journey with Job, and Transforming Acts: Acts of the Apostles as a 21st Century Gospel, again brings the study of a Bible book to life for a 21st century audience. Epperly founds his work in the results on modern critical scholarship, but he's not content with reciting scholarship or discussing history. He aims to make the study of this theologically central letter a transformative experience. He does so by never losing sight of the fact that human problems remain human problems and that human potentiality, touched by God's grace, can accomplish great things. He finds a message of liberation in this book. Liberation from our guilt, yes, but also liberation from our self-imposed limitations. Through reading, discussion, exercises, and thought questions, he leads the reader through a study that can only be described as an adventure. It's an adventure you won't want to miss.

What was created to be so beautiful that words for centuries have been unable to encompass its many facets, has now become for many a twisted and painful symbol for many who have suffered abuse of any kind. And yet in spite of that pain, we continue to seek love's beauty once again. This book is written by one who has passed through the flames of abuse, shame, guilt, and confusion. Only by God's grace has she come out on the other side in victory. She was given the courage to look at her pain, identify, forgive, and live again as someone new and ready to live again. Within these pages may you also find hope, courage, and healing as you take those first steps toward your own victory. May you glean some wisdom that will give you strength for today as you follow the author's own steps through the process of revelation. May you also find daily, practical new habits of thinking and living in real love for yourself and others.

In this third volume of the Academy of Parish Clergy's Conversations in Ministry series Dr. Bob Cornwall, church historian, theologian, and pastor, shows the ways in which one's theology shapes one's ministry in the church and in the world. Besides discussing the theological roots of ministry and mission, this book is firmly placed in the 21st century, looking at the virtual world as our parish as well as more traditional connections. Practical. Systematic. Spiritual. Down-to earth. If you are looking for a way to put more life, focus, and meaning into your ministry as a pastor or church leader, this is the book for you.

Book excerpt: The pages of the New Testament contain some 340 questions Jesus asked: "Who are my mother and my brothers?" "Now which of them will love him more?" "Why are you so afraid?" "Do you still have no faith? "Do you want to get well?" "Who do people say that I am?" Why did Jesus ask such questions? Surely He didn't lack information. Were they simply rhetorical? Is there more behind the questions of Jesus than meets the ear? After 20+ years of study, Chris Bozung suggests that Jesus never asked a question because he needed to know the answer. Jesus' questions pierce the heart, quicken the thoughts, convict the conscience, and evoke faith. They are Uncommon Questions from an Extraordinary Savior.

The loss of her child after yet another beating from her husband gives her the impetus to take her maidservant and flee South Carolina, leaving behind her parents, security, even her name and begin a new life in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania. Once again, author Kimberly Gordon, draws us into the lives of her fictional characters, connecting us in our contemporary lives with her imperfect people who struggle to make good choices, just like us. This story calls us to consider our own secret prejudices as Iris evolves from her childhood beliefs to the truths that she recognizes as she finds friends in those who were once thought of as slaves. Mrs. Gordon writes unapologetically from her Christian beliefs but avoids the distraction of preaching and, instead, offers her characters who are learning from the witness of others and their own time of prayer with God. You'll want to enjoy this clean read that is gripping while also being touching and romantic.

Book excerpt: Christian discussions of creation or origins typically start with one of the standard positions on this contentious doctrine and then presents the arguments in favor of that position. In this book, Edward W. H. Vick looks at creation as a matter of systematic theology. What does it mean for a doctrine to be called "Christian"? How does one derive and express a doctrine of creation that is truly Christian in content? He starts by distinguishing biblical theology, the topic of companion volume Creation in Scripture by Herold Weiss, from the systematic theology approach used in this book. This book is divided into three parts. Each has its own style and function. The first presents an introductory statement about how we approach a doctrinal explanation of the theme of Creation. Then we give a theological account of the meaning of the assertion that God is Creator. The second presents statements by representative respected theologians, as they expound the theme and argue for a separation of theology from science. It presents some quite basic positions. The third is in the form of a conversation-an effective way of introducing differing points of view pro and con. Finally, the book includes a series of questions for each chapter, making it useful as a basis for group study and discussion. This book will provide a solid theological foundation for further study of origins in the context of Christian faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when a newspaper editor gives his primary editorial slot on Sundays to a pastor? In the case of Bob Cornwall, a pastor in Troy, Michigan, the result is a series of relevant, interesting, and challenging essays that go well beyond the local scene while still managing to be relevant to Americans in their local situation. Now extensively revised and organized as to theme, these essays form a coherent statement of progressive Christianity at work in the public square. At the same time they are seasoned with a look at how the public square influences the spiritual life of a Christian living in mid-America. The 52 essays in this collection go well beyond one place and time. You will find yourself, your community, your state, your nation, and your world in each. Can a person of faith be involved in the public square with integrity? Is public policy made better by this action? Can faith remain whole and genuine following the encounter? Read these essays to discover the answers, and perhaps find a new optimism for the future as you do. Anyone can benefit, but pastors and church leaders will find help in demonstrating their faith in the public square.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way in which we read the Bible grows out of what we believe the Bible to be. Thus it is impossible to discuss methods of interpretation without considering our view of inspiration, the gathering of the canon, and even the reception of the Bible by the community of faith. And so, Edward W. H. Vick starts this comprehensive discussion of hermeneutics—the interpretation of Scripture—by looking at what the Bible is, and what empowers its authority. He brings a lifetime of experience, teaching and writing to the task. In this examination, he takes up such diverse topics as inspiration, canonization, authority, infallibility, inerrancy, verbal inspiration, sola scriptura, tradition, myth, and many related topics. Dr. Vick always relates these elements to the overarching questions: How shall we read Scripture? How shall we understand it? How does it impact the way we live and act? There are many books on how to read the Bible, but there are few that will offer this comprehensive and systematic study. If you apply the principles you find here to your own study, you will find the scriptures opening up in new ways. Dr. Vick will help you move beyond the assumptions that often stand in the way of our personal Bible study and see the remarkable variety and power that is mediated through this book we call the Bible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much good has experience done you so far? How much good do you expect it will do? Those who have lived eight decades in this world often feel the need to write about their life experiences or life philosophies. If that person has lived a varied, experiential life and shows good spiritual fruit in that life, it might be wise of those who are coming after them to read and listen to them and thus, learn! Ron Higdon has lived such a life and has now written such a book. Whether you are considering how to deal with change or how to find some stability, whether you are looking for the right answers, or just searching for the right questions, this book will look at living in a practical, community-centered, value-affirming way. Ron has lived those decades and done so thoughtfully. Now he's helping the rest of us out. So fix yourself a “hot cuppa,” pull up a chair, clean your reading glasses, and settle in for a chapter or two (or more!) and mark some nuggets of Higdon Gold to consider and meditate on.

This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world today is filled with angry voices, voices that often call for isolation and even violence against those who differ from us by race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or lifestyle. At the same time there are many voices that call for us to change, to make peace, to open ourselves up to others and hear what they’re saying. Most of these voices bring religious arguments to bear on the issue. Rev. Janice Springer goes a step, indeed several steps, further. She tells us how to reach out, how to pray, to interact, and indeed to change ourselves. This book provides a powerful approach to creating new, peaceful relationships and learning to live together while celebrating our differences and growing from them. The book includes guides to study, exercises, and activities, and a sample program for a retreat. It is written from the perspective of the author’s Christian ministry, but it is inviting and useful to those of other faith traditions as well. Who will you invite to join you at the table?
