Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first plant virus disease report for Western Australia (WA) was in 1901 on passionfruit. Since that time, more than 72 plant viruses have been identified infecting cultivated and wild plants in WA, and detailed research activities undertaken with some of them. This PhD thesis covers research studies I have taken a leading role with over a 15 year period on viruses causing diseases to cultivated (vegetable, broadacre and pasture) and wild (naturalised weeds, and native flora) plant species growing in the unique and diverse environments of WA. These studies were undertaken across three distinct climatic regions, the tropical north, the sub-tropical central west and the south-west with its Mediterranean-type climate. The areas within each climatic region growing cultivated plants are isolated from each other by vast expanses of arid, unpopulated tracts of land. Also, plant cultivation in these three cropping areas is a relatively recent activity (south-west 185 years, central west 85 years and north 50 years). Through field surveys and field, glasshouse and laboratory experimentation, valuable information and understanding about diverse virus-plant species pathosystems has been gathered. This has included information on virus occurrence, distribution, epidemiology, biological and molecular characterisation, and vectors. In addition, the yield and quality losses that virus infection causes on various plant species were determined and effective virus control measures devised. Within this thesis, examples of virus pathosystems of vegetable and broadacre crops, perennial pastures and wild plants are discussed. The main viruses and vegetable crops investigated were Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) in cucurbit crops, Potato virus Y (PVY) in potato, Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) in tomato, pepper and lettuce, and Lettuce necrotic yellows virus (LNYV) and lettuce big-vein disease (LBVD) in lettuce. All these viruses were studied in the south-west, except for ZYMV which was also examined in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of WA. Findings from surveys and experimentation provided new understanding of the epidemiology of these viruses and identified effective control measures (including manipulation of planting date, using non-host plant barriers, planting upwind of infection sources, using cultivars with virus resistance, improved hygiene practices). Highlights include demonstrating the contact transmissibility, stability and inactivation of ZYMV and PVY in infective sap; and determining spatial patterns of spread of ZYMV, TSWV, LNYV and LBVD in relation to internal and external virus sources. These findings enabled additional control recommendations to be added to the existing integrated disease management (IDM) strategies for ZYMV in cucurbits, PVY in potato and TSWV in lettuce, tomato and pepper. The main viruses and broadacre crops investigated were Beet western yellows virus (BWYV) (= Turnip yellows virus) and Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) in canola, Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) in wheat, and Pea seed-borne mosaic virus (PSbMV) in field pea and other legumes. These studies were done in the south-west of WA. From surveys and experimentation, alternative hosts of BWYV, TuMV and WSMV were identified, vectors of BWYV and WSMV were studied, canola genotypes were found with resistance to BWYV and TuMV, and insecticide seed dressings suppressed BWYV infection. For WSMV in wheat, the environmental conditions that drive its spread and the importance of seed-borne infection in initiating WSMV epidemics in a Mediterranean-type climate were identified. For PSbMV, cool-season crop legume genotypes varied in their resistance/susceptibility to infection, and with field pea use of virus resistant cultivars, cultural control practices (including seeding rate and stubble groundcover) and a threshold value of.

The success of modern agriculture depends on pathogen free seed with high yielding character and in turn disease management. There is a serious scientific concern about the transmission of plant viruses sexually through seed and asexually through plant propagules. The present book provides the latest information along with the total list of seed transmitted virus and viroid diseases at global level including, the yield losses, diagnostic techniques, mechanism of seed transmission, epidemiology and virus disease management aspects. Additional information is also provided on the transmission of plant virus and virus-like diseases through vegetative propagules. It is also well known that seed transmitted viruses are introduced into new countries and continents during large-scale traffic movements through infected germplasm and plant propogules. The latest diagnostic molecular techniques in different virus-host combinations along with disease management measures have been included. The book shall be a good reference source and also a text book to the research scientists, teachers, students of plant pathology, agriculture, horticulture, life sciences, green house managers, professional entrepreneurs, persons involved in quarantines and seed companies. This book has several important features of seed transmitted virus diseases and is a good informative source and thus deserves a place in almost all university libraries, seed companies and research organizations.

Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book provides a fresh, updated and science-based perspective on the current status and prospects of the diverse array of topics related to the potato, and was written by distinguished scientists with hands-on global experience in research aspects related to potato. The potato is the third most important global food crop in terms of consumption. Being the only vegetatively propagated species among the world’s main five staple crops creates both issues and opportunities for the potato: on the one hand, this constrains the speed of its geographic expansion and its options for international commercialization and distribution when compared with commodity crops such as maize, wheat or rice. On the other, it provides an effective insulation against speculation and unforeseen spikes in commodity prices, since the potato does not represent a good traded on global markets. These two factors highlight the underappreciated and underrated role of the potato as a dependable nutrition security crop, one that can mitigate turmoil in world food supply and demand and political instability in some developing countries. Increasingly, the global role of the potato has expanded from a profitable crop in developing countries to a crop providing income and nutrition security in developing ones. This book will appeal to academics and students of crop sciences, but also policy makers and other stakeholders involved in the potato and its contribution to humankind’s food security.

Book excerpt: Concern about the environmental consequences of the widespread use of pesticides has increased, and evidence of pesticide-resistant virus vectors have continued to emerge. This volume presents a timely survey of the mechanisms of plant resistance and examines current developments in breeding for resistance, with particular emphasis on advances in genetic engineering which allow for the incorporation of viral genetic material into plants. Discusses the mechanisms of innate resistance in strains of tobacco, tomato, and cowpea; various aspects of induced resistance, including the characterization and roles of the pathogenesis-related proteins; antiviral substances and their comparison with interferon; and cross-protection between plant virus strains. Also presents several papers which evaluate the status of genetic engineering as it relates to breeding resistant plants. Among these are discussions of the potential use of plant viruses as gene vectors, gene coding for viral coat protein, satellite RNA, and antisense RNA, and practical issues such as the durability of resistant crop plants in the field.

Book excerpt: Written for advanced undergraduate students, this book is a practical, in-depth guide to plant virology. Beginning with an introduction to viruses and their classification, the text describes virus pathology, including how viruses enter and move through plant cells and induce disease. Subsequent chapters discuss how viruses spread in the field and how to measure this. Throughout, the book remains reader-friendly, using focus boxes for clear, easy to obtain information, enabling students to quickly access relevant information but supply sufficient detail for advanced studies. In addition to basic information on virus biology there is an additional focus on applied virology, ideal for students undertaking agricultural studies for whom study of disease and its control is essential.
