Book excerpt: Forage crops are important for the economy of our country as these crops provide major nutritional base in the livestock ration. The National Commission on Agriculture has also emphasized in its report that in order to achieve the so-called ‘White Revolution’ it will be necessary to provide required emphasis on research relating to the improvement and management of forages. India’s average availability of milk per head per day comes to only 100 ml as against our requirement of 220 ml per day. With the increase in world human population and economic growth, the demand for animal products such as milk, meat and eggs in the human diet is bound to increase. The success of dairy and poultry programmes will largely depend on the availability of required forages and feeds since almost 60-65% investment is invariably on these essential requirements. A recent estimate indicates that the deficiency in total forage need is about 40% of dry forage and about 24% of green fodder. This deficit is likely to increase further as (i) the area under forage crop is declining because of the pressing problems of growing cereals and other cash crops to meet the increasing pressure of population growth, (ii) the animal population is increasing every year by almost 2% (iii) cultivable land is decreasing due to urbanization and industrial growth and (iv) forages in future are going to have competition from liquid fuel shortage. Recent interests in the development of technology for the economic conversion of cellulosic material to liquid fuels, however, have given rise to estimates of several hundred million metric tons of lignocellulosic material being used annually for their new developments. With the development of these technologies, the impact on ruminants production would be substantial, so there is going to be a vital challenge to meet the requirement of forages in the near future.

Book excerpt: Nitrogen in the Environment: Sources, Problems, and Management is the first volume to provide a holistic perspective and comprehensive treatment of nitrogen from field, to ecosystem, to treatment of urban and rural drinking water supplies, while also including a historical overview, human health impacts and policy considerations. It provides a worldwide perspective on nitrogen and agriculture. Nitrogen is one of the most critical elements required in agricultural systems for the production of crops for feed, food and fiber. The ever-increasing world population requires increasing use of nitrogen in agriculture to supply human needs for dietary protein. Worldwide demand for nitrogen will increase as a direct response to increasing population. Strategies and perspectives are considered to improve nitrogen-use efficiency. Issues of nitrogen in crop and human nutrition, and transport and transformations along the continuum from farm field to ground water, watersheds, streams, rivers, and coastal marine environments are discussed. Described are aerial transport of nitrogen from livestock and agricultural systems and the potential for deposition and impacts. The current status of nitrogen in the environment in selected terrestrial and coastal environments and crop and forest ecosystems and development of emerging technologies to minimize nitrogen impacts on the environment are addressed. The nitrogen cycle provides a framework for assessing broad scale or even global strategies to improve nitrogen use efficiency. Growing human populations are the driving force that requires increased nitrogen inputs. These increasing inputs into the food-production system directly result in increased livestock and human-excretory nitrogen contribution into the environment. The scope of this book is diverse, covering a range of topics and issues from furthering our understanding of nitrogen in the environment to policy considerations at both farm and national scales.

Book excerpt: This book basically based on an applied research whose main objectives were to: 1.To see the effect of different phosphorus levels on growth and nitrogen fixation by mash bean. 2.To determine the optimum level of phosphorus for nitrogen fixation by mash bean. In the course of this research experiment we concluded that N2 fixation capacity and yield components of mash bean were enhanced by the application of phosphorus. Response of mash bean was more pronounced to the highest and medium levels of phosphorus fertilization as compare to low level of phosphorus and control.

Book excerpt: A field experiment comprising four preceding crops (wheat, oats, berseem and patato) 3 levels of atrazine (0, 0.5 and 1.0 kg ai/ha) and 4 hitrogen level (0,40,80 and 120 kg n/ha) was conducted on fodder maize during summer season at national dairy research institute, Karnal in split plot design with four replications. The results of the investigations indicated that on the basis of yield quality and nitrogen economic optima of maize it is recommonded that under Karna; conditions maize should be grown after berseem or potato and be applied with 0.5 kg atrazine and about 80 kg N/ha. When net returns from system as a whole are taken into consideration maize should be grown after wheat succeded by fodder jowar and be applied with 0.5 kg atrazine and 80 kg N/ha. On the basis of maize alone it may be pointed out that maize grown after wheat oqts berseem and potato should be fertilized with 114.0 108.4, 77.0 and 84.4 kg N/ha at 0.5 kg aiatrazine level 98.4 91.4 76.4 and 74.4 kg N/ha at 1kg ai atrazine level and 288.8, 300.6, 132.0 and 144.4 kg N/ha at 0 kg atrazine level respectively.

Book excerpt: A field experiment consisting of three nitrogenous sources (FYM, Slurry and urea) under five levels (0,30,60,90 and 120 kg N/ha) was conducted on fodder maize and their residual effect were studied on chinese cabbage in the succeding season. Green yield of maize did not increase appreciably beyond 60 kg N/ha Neither of the three sources afected green yield and remained at par. With regard to dry matter yield a similar resuct was obtained. The yield atributes also improved upto 60 kg N/ha dose in maize. Studying residual effect it was revealed that there was increase in green yield by 18 and 22 per cent over control at 90 and 120 kg N/ha respectively. In case of dry matter the treatment effects were at par slurry application to maize showed the best performance in succeding season over FYM and urea. Growth parameters also increased in chinese cabbage by slurry application to maize quality parameters in maize were not influenced by either doses or sources of nitrogen. Residual effect of nitrogen sources did not show appreciable difference in crude protein production in chinese cabbage. Phosphorus uptake in maize was maximum with urea only phosphorus by FYM and slurry. Slurry was found to be a better source of soil amendment as compared to farm yard manure in succeding season.
