Book excerpt: Nonnative Oysters in the Chesapeake Bay discusses the proposed plan to offset the dramatic decline in the bay's native oysters by introducing disease-resistant reproductive Suminoe oysters from Asia. It suggests this move should be delayed until more is known about the environmental risks, even though carefully regulated cultivation of sterile Asian oysters in contained areas could help the local industry and researchers. It is also noted that even though these oysters eat the excess algae caused by pollution, it could take decades before there are enough of them to improve water quality.

Written by an expert in the field of shellfish research, this book presents more than 50 years of empirical research literature. It provides an understanding of the edible oysters, in order to equip students and researchers with the background needed to undertake further investigations on this model marine invertebrate. Presents empirical research findings in context with the relevant theory and its expression in computer models Includes information on studies of other bivalve species such as mussels and clams Offers a description of the whole organism to provide a frame of reference for further research Includes research developments in the phylogeny, physiology and ecology of oysters

Book excerpt: In 1966 Congress passed the National Sea Grant College Program Act to promote marine research, education, and extension services in institutions along the nation's ocean and Great Lakes coasts. In Maryland a Sea Grant Program -- a partnership among federal and state governments, universities, and industries -- began in 1977, and in 1982 the University of Maryland was named the nation's seventeenth Sea Grant College. The Maryland Sea Grant College focuses its efforts on the Chesapeake Bay, with emphasis on the marine concerns of fisheries, seafood technology, and environmental quality. The first comprehensive review of the biology of the eastern oyster in more than thirty years. The twenty-one chapters synthesize every aspect of oyster biology -- for instance, general anatomy, physiology, the circulatory system, reproduction, genetics, diseases -- and issues related to management and aquaculture.

Book excerpt: Oysters have a competitive advantage and dominate other molluscan species with respect to global distribution and aquaculture production. At present, the Pacific oyster has become one of the most important edible oysters in world aquaculture. Recently, with research advancements in oyster farming technology, non-native species invasion, environmental monitoring and disease control, new findings and outcomes have emerged. This book presents the latest research development in oyster reproduction, physiological response to pollution, ecological distribution and management, mass mortality, disease control, and other technical advance in oyster research. Book excerpt: Within the past decade there have been several studies on the biological structure of oyster reefs. These studies, however, gave few insights into the dynamics of oyster communities. The extensive studies of Hedgpeth (1953) , Gunter (1955), and Parker (1955, 1969) in Texas and Korringa (1951) in Holland were largely concerned with sessile forms, and the highly motile fishes went almost unnoticed. While these studies clearly emphasized imrmotile organisms, the present study leans in the opposite direction. This study started from casual observations of oyster fishes, and progressed to comparisons of mortality of oysters with activity of other members in the community.
