Perfect bond between the masonry unit and the mortar is essential for the masonry to perform as one single entity in order to resist the stresses due to various loading conditions. Nature of stresses developed in the masonry unit and the mortar and the failure pattern of masonry subjected to compression greatly depends upon the relative stiffness of the masonry unit and the mortar. The thesis is focused on (a) some issues pertaining to masonry unit - mortar bond strength and its influence on masonry compressive strength, and (b) developing a finite element (FE) model to predict the compressive strength of masonry. Importance of masonry bond strength and masonry behaviour is highlighted in chapter 1. Characteristics of masonry units and mortars used in the investigations are presented in Chapter 2. Two types of soil-cement blocks with widely varying strength and elastic properties and cement-lime mortars of two different proportions were used in the investigations. Results of stress-strain relationships and other characteristics were determined for the blocks as well as for mortars. Block-mortar combinations were selected to have block modulus to mortar modulus ratio of 1.0, ~1.0 and1.0. Different artificial methods of enhancing the shear bond strength of masonry couplets have been discussed in chapter 3. Shear bond strength of the masonry couplets was determined through a modified direct shear box test apparatus. Without altering the block and mortar properties, bond strength values for three block-mortar combinations were generated through experiments. Effect of pre-compression on shear bond strength has also been examined for certain block-mortar combinations. Considering five different bond strength values and three block-mortar combinations, compressive strength and stress-strain characteristics of masonry was obtained through the tests on masonry prisms. Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is to present a framework for the application of micro-modeling techniques for the analysis of unreinforced masonry structures. Finite element analyses of case studies from the literature are carried out in order to establish their capacity to predict the compressive strength of masonry. A critical review of the experimental inventory is carried out in parallel. An experimental campaign involving masonry materials common in historical structures is presented. A parametric study on the modeling technique and the influence of material properties is also performed based on the finite element framework already presented. A series of shear wall experiments are simulated using finite element models. The shear tests have been performed under a wide range of vertical prestress levels. The influence of the modeling technique is again investigated. A micro-mechanical model for the analysis of masonry periodic unit cells is developed and presented, based on a critical analysis of the results of the preceding finite element analyses. The model may be used for the derivation of the linear and nonlinear elastic properties of masonry walls ans pillars of a wide variety of typologies. The results of the model are compared against experimental results, finite element analysis benchmarks and closed form expressions. The model also forms the basis for the development of a closed formexpression for the prediction of the compressive strength of masonry. A complex masonry pillar is tested in compression. Its constituent materials are extensively characterized for the determination of their mechanical properties. The pillar test is simulated using a finite element micro-model for the purpose of highlighting the effect of the properties of its materials on its structural response. An analytical model for the prediction of the compressive strength of multi-leaf masonry is also proposed.

Book excerpt: The physical properties of mortars, the bond strength of the mortars to masonry units, and the structural strength of concrete masonry and composite masonry walls containing the mortars are discussed and compared. All of the mortars were tempered to as wet a consistency as could be conveniently handled by the mason. The compressive strength of the walls increased, in general, with the compressive strength of the mortar. The racking and flexural strengths of the walls increased with the bond strength of the mortar. The strength of bond test specimens tended to increase with the compressive strength of the wet consistency mortars that were used. However, bond strength appeared to be the dominant factor affecting the racking and flexural strength of the walls. Increase in both bond strength and wall strength with compressive strength of the mortar was not proportional to the relative compressive strengths of the type N and type S mortars. The stiffness of walls subjected to compressive and flexural loads increased with the bond and compressive strength of the mortars. However, the stiffness of walls subjected to flexural loads appeared to be more dependent upon the number of bed joints in the tensile face and on their extension in bond than upon the bending strains in the masonry materials.

Book excerpt: Reinforced masonry (RM) shear walls are commonly used in mid- and high-rise masonry buildings as the main lateral load resisting system. The seismic performance of RM shear walls can be enhanced by integrating reinforced boundary elements at the wall most stressed zone (i.e. wall ends). Evaluating the compression behaviour of the boundary elements is key for predicting the seismic response of the RM shear walls. Unlike reinforced concrete (RC), the experimental studies that focused on compressive stress-strain behaviour of reinforced masonry are scarce.This study quantifies the stress-strain relationship of sixteen C-shape full-scale and fifty four C-shape half-scale fully grouted unreinforced and reinforced masonry boundary element (RMBE) specimens tested under concentric compression loading up to failure. The effect of changing hoop spacing, vertical reinforcement ratio, the strength of grout, and aspect ratio (height to thickness) on the axial compressive stress-strain behaviour of RMBE is investigated. Enhancement in both peak and post peak stress-strain behaviour were observed by decreasing the hoop spacing, increasing the grout strength, decreasing the aspect ratio, and increasing the vertical reinforcement ratio. Out of the studied parameters, the hoop spacing had the most noticeable effect on the stress-strain relationship.Finite element modelling (FEM) numerical simulations are employed to simulate the compression behaviour of the full-scale RMBE. The proposed FEM procedure provides good prediction of the compression stress-strain behaviour of RMBEs and captures the influence of the confinement reinforcement ratio on the RMBE response. In addition, this study investigates the capability of three existing stress-strain models in predicting the RMBE stress-strain relationship. The considered models overestimated the enhancement in the RMBE stress and significantly overestimated the enhancement in the RMBE strain. Finally, an analytical compressive stress-strain model capable of predicting the RMBE compressive response considering various confinement effects is proposed. The proposed empirical stress-strain model is capable of capturing the overall compressive stress-strain behaviour where a good agreement with the test results was achieved. This model can be implemented in different design and assessment frameworks aiming at better prediction of the seismic response of RM walls with boundary elements.
