Book excerpt: The double torsion test specimen was evaluated to determine if it was suitable for use in subcritical crack growth studies of ductile engineering alloys. Several attractive features of the double torsion specimen were observed, including a simple, crack-length-independent expression for stress intensity and the apparent retention of plane-strain conditions in relatively thin plate specimens. Use of the double torsion specimen to determine V-K curves for high-strength aluminum alloys in a chloride environment produced conventional two-stage growth, plateau velocities being slightly higher than those observed in similar tests using conventional plan strain specimens. The double torsion specimen appears attractive for subcritical crack growth studies under plane-strain conditions, particularly in the Stage II regime where crack velocities are not strongly dependent on stress intensity.

Book excerpt: Studies were undertaken to test a concept of controlling stress-corrosion crack propagation in Al-Zn-Mg alloys through the use of minor alloying additions of elements known to retard hydrogen ion recombination such as Cd, As, Zr and Cr. Results indicated that the concept was invalid since the minor alloying additions themselves exerted a more profound influence on the grain boundary microstructure. Specifically, the microstructural features of grain boundary particle size and interparticle spacing were found to correlate with stress corrosion susceptibility. Auger electron spectroscope studies also revealed a correlation between the concentration of Zn and Mg within the precipitate-free zone and the susceptibility to cracking. Book excerpt: Since the grain-boundary constituents in Al-Zn-Mg alloys are generally too fine for their corrosion behavior to be studied in situ, an experimental approach involving simulation was adopted. This involved the examination of the corrosion behavior of a small ingot of MgZn2, the Al-Zn-Mg alloy in the as-quenched state, and pure aluminum. The pure aluminum and the as-quenched alloy were considered to represent the two limiting cases of the material comprising the precipitate-free zone; pure aluminum representing the limiting case of the solute-depleted region and the as-quenched alloy the vacancy depleted region. Book excerpt: There is growing interest in light metallic alloys for a wide number of applications owing to their processing efficiency, processability, long service life, and environmental sustainability. Aluminum, magnesium, and titanium alloys are addressed in this Special Issue, however, the predominant role played by aluminum. The collection of papers published here covers a wide range of topics that generally characterize the performance of the alloys after manufacturing by conventional and innovative processing routes.

Book excerpt: A study has been made of the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement (HE) in Al-Zn-Mg alloys, and of the role of hydrogen in the intergranular stress-corrosion cracking (I-SCC) of these alloys. Up to 300 ppm (1 at pct) hydrogen was introduced into a high-purity Al-5.6Zn-2.6Mg alloy, either by room temperature polishing with aqueous slurries of alumina particles or by exposure to water-vapor-saturated air (WVSA) at 70 C, and subsequent tensile tests (stress rate approx 0.0001/s) in inert environments caused brittle intergranular fracture. Embrittlement was found to be reversible, the tensile properties being completely restored when the hydrogen was outgassed. At low hydrogen contents, embrittlement was suppressed by the use of high strain rates (approx 0.01/s), but could not be suppressed by impact testing at large hydrogen concentrations. The intergranular fracture surfaces were observed to be associated with a fragmented layer, and electron-diffraction experiments indicated that it corresponded to a hexagonal aluminum hydride, Al H3, with a = 2.90 A and c = 4.55 A. This hydride, considered to be stress-induced, was unstable in laboratory air, slowly decomposing to FCC Al. It is concluded that internal HE in this alloy occurs by repeated cycles of the formation and rupture of this brittle hydride.

This book was released on 1969 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made of the role of the precipitate-free zone (PFZ) in the stress-corrosion cracking of a ternary Al-5.3 w/o Zn-2.5 w/o Mg alloy in aqueous chloride solutions. For alloys heat treated to give the same hardness (140 D.P.N.), susceptibility was found to depend on the width of the PFZ (in the range 0.04-0.35 microns), both the time to initiate and to propagate stress-corrosion cracks decreasing significantly with decreasing PFZ width. Application of small anodic currents (e.g. 0.2 mA/sq cm) reduced failure times by about two orders of magnitude, while cathodic currents inhibited failure. Fractographic studies indicated that the mode of stress-corrosion failure differs from that obtained in normal tensile fracture; no evidence for discontinuous crack propagation was found. These and other observations are discussed in terms of the proposed mechanisms of stress-corrosion cracking, and shown to be consistent with a mechanism involving localized anodic dissolution of plastically deforming solid solution within the PFZ.
