The study focuses on the development of the phase-conjugate fiber-optic gyro and the generation of new device concepts. Although much attention is paid to the aberration correction property of phase conjugation, little attention is paid to the phase reversal property. The phase-reversal property has important applications in inertial navigation devices. The general problem for this program is to generate new device concepts using the phase-reversal property of phase conjugation. Polarization scrambling is a well-known source of noise and signal fading in fiber-optic gyros. Some gyros avoid this problem by using polarization-preserving fibers and couplers to decouple the polarization modes. This program studies a new approach in which polarization-preserving phase conjugation is used to correct for polarization scrambling without the need for polarization-preserving fibers and couplers. There are several areas of significant progress in the first year of this program that are directly related to the development of the phase-conjugate fiber-optic gyro. These include: First experimental observation of the phase-conjugate Sagnac phase shift; and First demonstrations of rotation sensing with a phase-conjugate gyro and with a self-pumped phase-conjugate fiber-optic gyro.

We achieved the first demonstration of a wide angle (approx. 45 deg.) narrowband approx. 1/10 cm) optical filter using phase conjugation. We achieved the first demonstration of full vector-wave phase-conjugation by which an image was restored after double-passing a birefringent phase aberrator. We demonstrated edge-enhancement of an optical phase-conjugate image in real time. Studies of resonant nonlinear refraction and phase conjugation in sodium vapor continued. (Author).

Wave and beam light optics are reviewed in considerable detail, featuring optical imaging and holography in linear optics and phase conjugation methods in nonlinear optics. Photon optics is embodied here as quantum optics with the modes treated as quantum harmonic oscillators. The importance of the Wigner function for the phase space description in the context of canonical quantization is respected and the method of quasidistributions related to operator orderings in the second-quantized theory is exposed. The history of the quantum phase problem, characterized by renewed interest in the solution to the problem, is included and brought up to date. Approaches based on exponential phase operators, discrete phase states, the enlargement of the Hilbert space of the harmonic oscillator leading to the phase representations and distributions, together with solutions motivated by the quasidistributions, are introduced. The operational approach to the quantum phase is contrasted with the previous formalisms. The results of the study of the coherent states and the ordinary squeezed states from the viewpoint of the quantum phase and those of the analysis of the quantum statistics of phase-related special states of the light field are provided. The figure presents the ap proximate rate of publications (number of articles per year) on OPC in the world literature for recent years, the lower curve denoting the work carried out in the USSR. The efforts of a large unofficial international collective have yielded an impressive result. 150 100 50 1975 1980 At present, the physical pro ces ses underlying various OPC methods are quite understandable, and it is the physics of OPC to which our book is devoted. Practical and scientific applications of phase-conjugated waves, which are of no less interest, have been touched upon in short, as major achievements in this sphere are a matter of the future. Today there are two main methods of OPC: i) by backward stimulated light scattering, ii) by four-wave mixing. Book excerpt: Four-wave mixing (FWM), a nonlinear optical process, was investigated in resonant cavity light emitting diodes (RCLEDs) and vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) below lasing threshold. These semiconductor photonic devices consisted of an optical gain region of quantum wells sandwiched between two distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) mirrors. Pump and probe lasers were injected into the devices to generate FWM. The dependence of FWM on bias current, pump laser power, and spectral and spatial separation between pump and probe lasers was investigated experimentally. A computer model of FWM based on the wave and carrier density equations was developed and agreed well with experimental results. Conjugate reflectivities of I were obtained in the VCSEL when bias current was below threshold but above transparency. Reasonable conjugate reflectivities were obtained for pump-probe detunings up to 2 GHz in both devices. Noncollinear FWM was performed for the first time in VCSELs or RCLEDs at angles up to 10 deg. Both experiment and model showed the possibility of generating a strong reflected conjugate signal while minimizing the reflected pump signal. The noncollinear FWM demonstrated the possibility of phase front conjugation for correcting aberrated signals in vertical cavity devices.
