The study focuses on the development of the phase-conjugate fiber-optic gyro and the generation of new device concepts. Although much attention is paid to the aberration correction property of phase conjugation, little attention is paid to the phase reversal property. The phase-reversal property has important applications in inertial navigation devices. The general problem for this program is to generate new device concepts using the phase-reversal property of phase conjugation. Polarization scrambling is a well-known source of noise and signal fading in fiber-optic gyros. Some gyros avoid this problem by using polarization-preserving fibers and couplers to decouple the polarization modes. This program studies a new approach in which polarization-preserving phase conjugation is used to correct for polarization scrambling without the need for polarization-preserving fibers and couplers. There are several areas of significant progress in the first year of this program that are directly related to the development of the phase-conjugate fiber-optic gyro. These include: First experimental observation of the phase-conjugate Sagnac phase shift; and First demonstrations of rotation sensing with a phase-conjugate gyro and with a self-pumped phase-conjugate fiber-optic gyro.

The importance of the Wigner function for the phase space description in the context of canonical quantization is respected and the method of quasidistributions related to operator orderings in the second-quantized theory is exposed. Book excerpt: Four-wave mixing (FWM), a nonlinear optical process, was investigated in resonant cavity light emitting diodes (RCLEDs) and vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) below lasing threshold. These semiconductor photonic devices consisted of an optical gain region of quantum wells sandwiched between two distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) mirrors. Pump and probe lasers were injected into the devices to generate FWM. The dependence of FWM on bias current, pump laser power, and spectral and spatial separation between pump and probe lasers was investigated experimentally. A computer model of FWM based on the wave and carrier density equations was developed and agreed well with experimental results. Conjugate reflectivities of I were obtained in the VCSEL when bias current was below threshold but above transparency. Reasonable conjugate reflectivities were obtained for pump-probe detunings up to 2 GHz in both devices. Noncollinear FWM was performed for the first time in VCSELs or RCLEDs at angles up to 10 deg. Both experiment and model showed the possibility of generating a strong reflected conjugate signal while minimizing the reflected pump signal. The noncollinear FWM demonstrated the possibility of phase front conjugation for correcting aberrated signals in vertical cavity devices.
