Book excerpt: Here, we present the final technical report on AFOSR Grant F49620-93-0064, Studies Of Hypersonic Boundary Layer Behavior. The grant covered three interrelated research efforts: a study of the structure of hypersonic turbulent boundary layers and shock wave boundary layer interactions, a study of boundary layer transition at supersonic and hypersonic speeds, and the development and application of new optical techniques including filtered Rayleigh scattering and RELIEF to obtain multi-dimensional velocity and density data in the supersonic and hypersonic regimes. The research was performed using the existing facilities in the Applied Physics and Lasers Laboratory and at the Princeton University Gas Dynamics Laboratory. The construction of a new boundary layer facility was also partly supported under this contract. The new facility is designed to operate at Mach numbers from 2 to 8, with a range of Reynolds numbers so that the boundary layer can be laminar or turbulent, at all Mach numbers. It is primarily designed to operate with air (and possibly other gases including nitrogen and SF6) to exploit the new optical techniques and to help isolate specific Mach number and Reynolds number effects. It will be ready for its first trials in May, 1995. (AN).

During the three-year period, we have conducted extensive DNS studies on the receptivity of hypersonic boundary layer flows over a sharp wedge, a flat plate, a blunt cone, and the FRESH aeroshell. DNS studies are compared with Stetson's 1984 stability experiment on Mach 7.99 flow over a blunt cone, and Maslov's leading-edge receptivity experiment on Mach 5.92 flow over a flat plate. Our numerical studies have been validated to be of high accuracy and led to further understanding of hypersonic boundary layer receptivity mechanism. Such understanding can lead to better tools for the prediction and control of high-speed boundary layer transition.

The main approach is to use DNS as a research tool to study the boundary layer receptivity and transient-growth mechanisms in hypersonic flows, including the development of numerical algorithms and parallel computer codes of higher order numerical methods for the simulation of hypersonic flows with surface roughness of finite heights. During the three-year period, we have conducted DNS studies on the hypersonic boundary layer flows over flat plates and blunt cones. A new high-order cut-cell method has been developed for the numerical simulation of hypersonic boundary layer transition with finite height surface roughness. The method has been applied to the numerical simulations of two-dimensional hypersonic flows over a flat plate. Furthermore, the stabilization effect of the surface porous coating over a flat plate is extensively studied by series of numerical simulations. We also collaborate with Prof. Tumin in the University of Arizona to compare numerical and theoretical results on receptivity of a Mach 5.92 flow over a flat plate to wall blowing-suction, and to analyze the nonparallel flow effect.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an investigation of hypersonic laminar boundary-layer/shock-wave interactions using the method of MacCormack to solve the time-dependent compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Comparisons of the numerical solutions with experimental data were made to ascertain the validity of the numerical method and to identify regions of anomalous behavior. The algorithm gave good results when applied to hypersonic laminar interactions that caused either small or no separated regions and marginal performance when applied to hypersonic laminar interactions having large regions of separated flow. The extents of the separated regions in interactions having large regions of separated flow were underpredicted when compared with experimental data. The predicted wall heat-transfer rates exhibited the correct qualitative trend but not the experimentally measured quantitative values. Consideration of the effects of needed stabilizing terms as well as grid resolution suggests inadequate mesh spacing in the longitudinal direction as the cause of the aforementioned anomalies. If inadequate mesh spacing (and the corresponding lack of support for every term of the Navier-Stokes equations) is a prime cause of the cited discrepancies between the numerical results and the experimental data, then the needed reduction of several orders of magnitude in delta x, would increase CPU time and core storage requirements to untenable levels. Book excerpt: Prior research in the field of boundary layer turbulence has identified streamwise-elongated large-scale turbulence structures in both low speed compressible and high speed (M=2.0) flow. No experimental work has been done in any flow of M>̲3 in an attempt to identify the presence or quantify the behavior of these structures, nor has any study of favorable pressure gradient or surface roughness element effects on these structures been conducted. This research used high-resolution Particle Imaging Velocimetry in a M = 4.9 blow-down wind tunnel accompanied by a series of data analysis in order to identify the existence of streamwise-elongated large-scale turbulence structures in a hypersonic boundary layer. Furthermore, this study identified physical and statistical behavior which suggests that increasing favorable pressure gradient had a substantial impact on both the structural coherence and relative intensity of these turbulent structures at all boundary layer heights tested. This experiment also identified similar effects on these structures in the lower half of the boundary layer as a result of the introduction of surface roughness elements. Finally, several trends were identified between the averaged turbulence statistics and the behavior of the large-scale streamwise-elongated turbulence structures present in this study.
