Book excerpt: Atmospheric Electricity, Second Edition provides a comprehensive discussion of the various aspects and areas of concern in atmospheric electricity. The book limits its concerns to the essential and unique topics that are relevant to the general problems in atmospheric electricity. The text first presents historical survey atmospheric electricity, and then proceeds to covering the general principles involved in atmospheric electricity. The subsequent chapters cover the much more specific and technical concepts, such as the separation of charge; the lightning discharge; the transfer of charge; the vertical potential gradient; and ions and nuclei. The title will be of great use to students, researchers, and practitioners of disciplines related to meteorology.

Book excerpt: Airborne electric field sensing and computing systems have been developed and flown on C-130, F-100F, RF4C, and U-2 aircraft for studies of shower, cloud, and thunderstorm charge centers. Examples are given of the proper separation of field components and aircraft charge during thunderstorm penetrations and during direct lightning strikes to the test aircraft. Techniques have been employed for roll compensation of the aircraft-fixed field components so that real-time vector displays indicating the centroid of near-by charge concentrations are available for use in avoidance of probable lightning areas, or for use in selecting them to maximize the probability of a strike to test aircraft during lightning-aircraft interaction studies. The development of the storm electrical structure is directly related to details of the cloud water and ice distribution linked through the thermal and draft structure in the storm. Major features of the internal electrical pattern are often seen in data taken above, alongside, or at the surface. However, in accordance with electrostatic field theory, many of the fine structural details found within the storm are suppressed outside. The major vertical component field pattern is found to be one that could be produced by simple tilted dipolar charge structures. Depending on the physical conditions in different regions of the storm, the upper excess charge of the dipole may be either positive as generally reported from surface observations of the field, or it may be negative, as found in a number of the U-2 storm overflights accomplished in this project. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of electrical charges on raindrops from non-thunderstorm clouds is investigated. Measurements of raindrop charges, precipitation currents and space charges made in various parts of the world indicate that on the average positive charges prevail on raindrops. To explain rain charges, a well known hypothesis requires the melting of snow. In Hawaii, however, rain often forms by condensation and coalescence without ice or snow in the upper portions of the cloud. Yet raindrop charges do not differ from charges measured in other types of rain. Measurements of charges on Hawaiian rain are discussed together with observations of electrical field and condensation nuclei profiles. It was found that positive charges are of the order of 10−4 esu. A correlation of these charges with wind speed was found. Electric fields in rain clouds are generally positive except at the lower cloud boundary where negative fields of up to -1000 V/m exist. Several thunderstorm theories are discussed and their applicability to the warm mechanism is examined. A new hypothesis is necessary to explain the observed electrical features of warm rain. A theory based on influence is presented and formulated. Due to low electrical conductivity inside the cloud, positive space charges form in the upper part of the cloud and negative in the lower, influenced by an impressed conduction current from above the cloud. These space charges diffuse to the raindrops. Considering a coalescence mechanism for drop growth, the residence time of raindrops in the negative space charge area is much smaller than the corresponding time in the positive area, and so the drops usually leave the cloud with a positive charge. Numerical solutions to drop charges and electric field profiles using a realistic cloud model were obtained through the use of digital computer techniques. The theoretical results for charges on raindrops and electric field patterns agree well with observations.

Book excerpt: Research on clouds and precipitation has undergone considerable development in the Soviet Union during the last forty years. In the pre-war years, a great deal of data was collected from the network of weather stations on clouds and precipitation; synoptic methods of forecasting these phenomena were developed; a substantial amount of laboratory research was carried out on thunderstorm electricity and the mechanism of precipitation formation; and research was begun on clouds in the vicinity of mountains. Immediately after the war, research was renewed in the Soviet Union on the active modification of clouds and fog. Physical methods have been developed for forecasting cloudiness and precipitation, based on the solution to dynamic atmosphere equations and energy relationships. In recent years, more and more effort has been put into cloud research and into the development of methods of active modification.
