Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies have demonstrated multiple-photon excitation of atomic species. Bischel and coworkers have provided a detailed description of two-photon excitation fluorescence in the detection of atoms generated in a low pressure discharge and its possible application as a diagnostic tool in flame and plasmas. It is also believed that such techniques can be useful in detecting molecular transients which are difficult to detect otherwise as demonstrated in two-photon laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection of NO. In this paper, we discuss our recent two-photon LIF studies on I and Br atoms, which are produced via laser photolysis of molecular precursors. The two-photon LIF study of HS and DS radicals is presented as a test case for the detection of other important radical species such as C2H and CH3, which are currently being investigated in our laboratory. In addition, excitation of three-photon resonances of I2, N2, and H2 is discussed.

Download or read book Topics in Fluorescence Spectroscopy written by Joseph R. Lakowicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluorescence spectroscopy continues its advance to more sophisticated methods and applications. As one looks over the previous decades, its appears that the first practical instruments for time-resolved measurements appeared in the 1970’s. The instrumentation and analysis methods for time-resolved fluorescence advanced rapidly throughout the 1980’s. Since 1990 we have witnessed a rapid migration of the principles of time-resolved fluorescence to cell biology and clinical appli- tions. Most recently, we have seen the introduction of multi-photon excitation, pump-probe and stimulated emission methods for studies of biological mac- molecules and for cellular imaging. These advanced topics are the subject of the present volume. Two-photon excitation was first predicted by Maria Goppert-Mayer in 1931, but was not experimentally observed until 1961. Observation of two-photon excitation required the introduction of lasers which provided adequate photon density for multi-photon absorption. Since the early observations of two-photon excitation in the 1960s, multi-photon spectroscopy has been limited to somewhat exotic applications of chemical physics, where it is used to study the electronic symmetry of small molecules. Placing one’s self back in 1980, it would be hard to imagine the use of multi-photon excitation in biophysics or cellular imaging.
Book Synopsis Studies of Atomic Nitrogen in Low Pressure Discharges by Two-Photon Laser Induced Fluorescence by : Steven Frank Adams

This book was released on 1999-07-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of diagnostic experiments have been compiled to investigate rf and microwave discharges in N2, such as those used for plasma processing of electronic materials. To develop a picture, as complete as possible, of the discharge chemistry, several reactive intermediates, e.g. N, N2(A), N2(B) and N2(C), were monitored. An alternative two-photon laser induced fluorescence (TALIF) scheme for detection of atomic nitrogen has been characterized and used to monitor and evaluate various atomic nitrogen sources. Photodissociation of N2O and subsequent detection of N atom photofragments by TALIF was also performed using the 207 NM laser pulse. From measurements within the pulsed rf discharge, a kinetic model was developed which predicted absolute concentrations of various discharge species. The behavior of several discharge species were also monitored in the N2 microwave discharge and compared to the model for the addition of small amounts of H2 and NH3. Atomic nitrogen destruction by surface and volume reaction was investigated by temporal N atom decay within a pulsed rf discharge. The volume loss rate of atomic nitrogen was also quantified to be substantially increased with the addition of as little as 0.1% O2 in an N2 rf discharge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of thc chemical behavior of trace compounds in the atmosphere has grown steadily, and sometimes even spectacularly, in recent decades. These developments have led to the emergence of atmospheric chemistry as a new branch of science. This book covers all aspects of atmospheric chemistry on a global scale, integrating information from chemistry and geochemistry, physics, and biology to provide a unified account. For each atmospheric constituent of interest, the text summarizes the principal observations on global distribution, chemical reactions, natural and anthropogenic sources, and physical removal processes. Coverage includes processes in the gas phase, in aerosols and c1ouds, and in precipitation, as well as biogeochemical cycles and the evolution of the atmosphere. Chemistry of the Natural Atmosphere, Second Edition, will serve as a textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate courses, and as an essential reference for atmospheric chemists, meteorologists, and anyone studying the biogeochemical cycles of trace gases. * Updated extensively from the highly respected first edition * Treats the global-scale chemistry and distribution of atmospheric trace constituents * Emphasizes observations and their interpretation* Provides background on transport and reaction kinetics for interpretation of observational data* Includes chemistry in the gas phase and in aerosols and clouds* Details chemical reaction pathways for the most important trace constituents* Describes pertinent biogeochemical cycles* Written by an author with more than 40 years of research experience in atmospheric chemistry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrashort Laser Pulse Phenomena, Second Edition serves as an introduction to the phenomena of ultra short laser pulses and describes how this technology can be used to examine problems in areas such as electromagnetism, optics, and quantum mechanics. Ultrashort Laser Pulse Phenomena combines theoretical backgrounds and experimental techniques and will serve as a manual on designing and constructing femtosecond ("faster than electronics") systems or experiments from scratch. Beyond the simple optical system, the various sources of ultrashort pulses are presented, again with emphasis on the basic concepts and how they apply to the design of particular sources (dye lasers, solid state lasers, semiconductor lasers, fiber lasers, and sources based on frequency conversion). Provides an easy to follow guide through "faster than electronics" probing and detection methods THE manual on designing and constructing femtosecond systems and experiments Discusses essential technology for applications in micro-machining, femtochemistry, and medical imaging

Book excerpt: Finally, the fs-TALIF diagnostic is used in an atmospheric-pressure combustion environment, where plasma-assisted combustion (PAC) is used to augment flame characteristics. Fs-TALIF measurements of atomic hydrogen and oxygen are compared with hydroxyl radical number densities obtained with ns laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements, to understand OH production mechanisms in the discharge occurring in the hot, downstream products of a premixed hydrocarbon/air flame. The fs-TALIF diagnostic provides fluorescence measurements more accurately from the PAC-produced atomic species, due to simultaneous measurement of quenching rates and reduced photolytic production in the hydrocarbon flames.
