Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Science of English Grammar The following work is based upon the thought that there is a fish in grammar, that it is the sentence as it is determined by the thought which it expresses, and that the method which should be pursued in studying it, might appropriately be called the laboratory method. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Scientific Grammar of the English Language The text books are filled with a mass of absurdity and contradiction totally unworthy of the name of science and the time and labor of those who use them are worse than wasted. This state of things 18 a disgrace to the scholarship of the age, and calls loudly for a reformation. The absolute truth of these statements can easily be demonstrated but there is no room in this volume for such matter. Lest, however, any one should think the author to be peculiar and extreme in his views, let a few others be heard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Language and English Grammar: An Historical Study of the Sources, Development, and Analogies of the Language and of the Principles Governing Its Usages Much of what is contained in the following pages was first written for purposes of private instruction, and without any View to publication but as one chapter was added after another, it began to be thought that some portions might interest a larger class of readers. There are many persons who would be glad to know more about the English language than can be gained from the formal routine of the public schools, who, nevertheless, are unable to procure and read the great number of valuable works on the subject that have issued from the press within a period of fifty years. Such persons are in a position to appreciate a work taking a somewhat wider view than the common text-books, and presenting some of the more familiar results of modern philology. There are two classes for whom this book is not intended. The first are those who are already familiar with all the results of past labors, and who, therefore, can find nothing here to add to their present ample stores of knowledge, there being no claim to original discovery or invention. The second class are those who neither know or care anything about the history or philology of their native tongue. Between these extremes is the large and important class who already know something and desire to know more. These notes, purely explanatory, while of great value to the teacher, are of little value to the learner. They have deemed it advisable to accustom the pupil to the phraseology of Analysis at an early stage of the study of Grammar, and, accordingly, examples bearing upon that subject have been introduced Where necessary. Grammar is an art as well as a science, and in this as in other arts the pupil's first step is to become acquainted with a few technical terms. What is required is that he shall learn as speedily as possible the application of these terms. Long before he makes any attempt to form logical definitions and exhaustive classifications he should acquire a work ing knowledge of the most frequently used grammatical terms. He should be able to apply these terms, that is, to identify sentences, subjects, predicates, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and so on. Having learned to identify his grammatical tools and to label them with a technical label, the student can readily understand the meaning of a Rule of Grammar. Hitherto, owing to his ignorance of such terms his grammatical errors could not be dealt with in any general way. His teacher has been compelled to give instruction in the art of grammar in popular and non technical language, and to deal with each case specifically as opportunity offered. General rules for guidance may now be conveniently employed. Grammar is a science as well as an art. When we come to the stage of scientific grammar we find that the courses open to us are different in starting point and mode of procedure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Grammar: The First Book of English Grammar; Prepared as a Text-Book for Public Schools, and for the Primary Classes of High Schools and Academies In the revision of his. Manuscripts, 'the author placed at the commencement, The Corrections of the First Part. The Second, Third, and Fourth Parts, which make up the remaining portion of the Elements of Grammar, were written as a connecting link between Part First and the Second Book of Grammar; which latter was originally pre pared for the use of classes that had already made consider able progress ih this science. The Third and Fourth Parts were completely re-written, and every sentence submitted to a critical examination. Thus revised, the manuscripts have been 'used in the instruo tion of every grade of pupils, for nearly ten years; and such has. Been the interest they have awakened, as to make the study of Grammar a, recreation, and the hour of its recitation one of almost unmingled delight. To this interest, the system of symbols has greatly con tributed; and'to their use the attention of teachers is invited. An experience of years has only strengthened the conviction, that they are to Grammar what figures are to Arithmetic, and diagrams to Geometry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Grammar: And How to Teach It The principal reason for adding another Grammar to the many already in print, is the fact that another is needed. In no branch of Common School study does the labor expended appear to produce so little in the way of results. It has even been discussed in State Teachers' Associations, whether the study of Gram mar is productive of any good. And, since the facts pertaining to language are certainly worth knowing, the fair conclusion is, that the facts can be presented in some form better suited to the necessities of teachers and pupils than any which has yet been tried. This volume presents a method of teaching Grammar which has been carefully tested in the school-room. The book contains a selection of the facts pertaining to lan guage. In teaching for many years, one learns that certain facts are to be retained firmly, certain others to be read, or used as illustrations, and others used as han dles bv which to grasp and hold other facts. Gramma rians attempting to make their school grammars complete treatises upon the study of language, have put so much in them that they have bewildered and disgusted the pupil. A grammar should be judged by what it leaves out as much as by what it contains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grammar of English Grammars: With an Introduction Historical and Critical; The Whole Methodically Arranged and Amply Illustrated After about fifteen years devoted chiefly to grammatical studies and exercises, during most of which time I had been alternately instructing youth in four different languages, thinking it practicable to effect some improvement upon the manuals which explain our own. I pre pared and published, for the use of schools, a. Duodecimo volume of about three hundred pages; which, upon the presumption that its principles were conformable to the best usage, and well established thereby, I entitled, The Institutes of English Grammar. Of this work, which, it is believed, has been gradually gaining in reputation and demand ever since its first publication, there is no occasion to say more here, than that it was the result of diligent study, and that it is, essentially, the nucleus, or the groundwork, of the present volume. With much additional labour, the principles contained in the Institutes of English Gram mar, have here been not only reaffirmed and rewritten, but occasionally improved in ex pression, or amplified in their details. New topics, new definitions, new rules, have also been added; and all parts of the subject have been illustrated by a multiplicity of new examples and exercises, which it has required a long time to amass and arrange. To the main doctrines, also, are here subjoined many new observations and criticisms, which are the results of no inconsiderable reading and reflection.
