Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Politics of Aristotle and the Republic of Plato, Vol. 1 The Politics of Aristotle is accessible to English readers through several excellent translations from the Greek into English. The most important of these translations are: The Politics of Aristotle, translated into English with an analysis and critical notes, by J. E. C. Welldon, M. A., London, Macmillan, 1897; and The Politics of Aristotle, translated into English, with introduction, marginal analysis, essays, notes and indices, by B. Jowett, M. A., 2 vols., Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1885. Besides these there is a most admirable edition of three of the most important books of the Politics - I, III, IV (VII), the text of Bekker, with an English translation by W. E. Bolland, together with short introductory essays by Andrew Lang, Longmans, Green & Co., 1877. As commonly received at present the text of The Politics is divided into certain general divisions called books and subdivisions called chapters. These books and chapters would by a contemporary writer be more likely designated as chapters and sections respectively. While no rigorous method, such as we would expect in a modern scientific writer, characterizes Aristotle's treatise on Politics, each chapter or book has essentially one main thought which may serve as the title of such book or chapter. I have summarized these as follows: I. On the Nature of the State and the Elements of Political Economy. II. An Examination of Constitutions (Polities) Literary and Historical; or Projected and Existing. III. Constitutional Theory - What is the best constitution (polity)? IV. The Forms of Government. V. Political Revolutions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Toward the end of the astonishing period of Athenian creativity that furnished Western civilization with the greater part of its intellectual, artistic, and political wealth, Plato wrote The Republic, his discussion of the nature and meaning of justice and of the ideal state and its ruler. All subsequent European thinking about these subjects owes its character, directly or indirectly, to this most famous (and most accessible) of the Platonic dialogues. Although he describes a society that looks to some like the ideal human community and to others like a totalitarian nightmare, in the course of his description Plato raises enduringly relevant questions about politics, art, education, and the general conduct of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristotle's Politics: Translated by Benjamin Jowett With Introduction, Analysis and Index by H. W. C. Davis Zation, he was still more alive to the dangers, moral and other, which beset the path of a military and aggressive state. His sympathies were with the past, not the future; with Sparta and Athens rather than with Macedon; with Plato rather than with Alexander. Settling down at Athens, he became the leader of a philosophic school, the director of a brilliant academy; but he incurred the odium to which a friend of Macedon was naturally exposed in the city of Demosthenes. In 323, after the death of his pupil and patron, he was driven into exile by a prosecution for impiety which, if he had faced it, would probably have brought upon his head the fate of Socrates. He died in the following year at Chalcis, a Macedonian stronghold. The semi-barbarians, of whose future he doubted, had been more generous to him than the Greeks, whose highest thought it had been his life-work to interpret and to vindicate. Book excerpt: Twenty-three centuries after its compilation, 'The Politics' still has much to contribute to this central question of political science. Aristotle's thorough and carefully argued analysis is based on a study of over 150 city constitutions, covering a huge range of political issues in order to establish which types of constitution are best - both ideally and in particular circumstances - and how they may be maintained. Aristotle's opinions form an essential background to the thinking of philosophers such as Thomas Aquinas, Machiavelli and Jean Bodin and both his premises and arguments raise questions that are as relevant to modern society as they were to the ancient world.

Translated by Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893). The Layout is +30 % larger as the original. "The Republic" is Plato's best-known work, it has proven to be one of the world's most influential works of philosophy and political theory, both intellectually and historically. In it, Socrates along with various Athenians and foreigners discuss the meaning of justice and examine whether or not the just man is happier than the unjust man by considering a series of different cities coming into existence "in speech," culminating in a city called Kallipolis, which is ruled by philosopher-kings; and by examining the nature of existing regimes. The participants also discuss the theory of forms, the immortality of the soul, and the roles of the philosopher and of poetry in society.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plato's Republic Introductory - Twice during a literary career of half a century, .plato addressed his thoughts to a wider public than the literary circle or the philo sophical school. In' the meridian of his life he produced the Republic, and, in old age, after a period of changeful activity, he indited what has come down to us in the twelve books of the Laws. In the interim, through much effort and disillusion ment, his thoughts had widened to embrace the whole Hellenic world; whereas in the Republ the horizon is still Athenian; althoughthe enr vironing cloud-land is illumined with cross-lights from a glorified Sparta, and from the wisdom of the greater Hellas in the distant west.
