Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the History of Venice, Vol. 2 Venetian diplomacy during the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries was recognized as the fullest and ablest in Europe. The despatches addressed to the "Doge and Senate," or on rarer but more important occasions to the "Chiefs of the Council of Ten," fill many rooms in the storehouse of the Frari, and have furnished, and continue to furnish, to students of all nationalities, a rich and varied and sometimes piquant picture of the condition of Europe generally. Despatches were sent as a rule once a week; but at a crisis, or if some matter of moment called for fuller attention, they follow each other in daily succession and occasionally number three and four a day. When we remember that Venice kept her agents in every capital of the small Italian states and at the court of every sovereign in Europe, that she received reports from Russia, Turkey, Italy, Spain, France, England, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, we can understand that little of moment escaped the meshes of her diplomatic service, and that the Venetian ambassador became the accredited source of information - if authorized to give it - especially on the affairs of the East, where Venetian interests largely lay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice, Vol. 1 of 2 For several years past I have devoted my self to collecting and arranging material for a book to embody the idea I had thus enter tained. I earnestly hope it may meet a want on the part of tourists, especially Americans, who, so far as my experience goes, usually come to Europe with an honest and reverent desire to learn from the Old World whatever of value it has to teach them, and who are prepared to take an amount of pains in turn ing their trip to good account which is both rare and praiseworthy. For such readers I shall call attention at times to other sources of information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venetian Life, Vol. 1 Something more than one half of the book appeared in letters to the Boston Advertiser. In the meanwhile, and for more than a year afterwards, the Scope of the work enlarged itself so as to include the historical chap ters, though the chapter on commerce was written after it had passed to a second edition. Much later, after many editions had been exhausted, I added a chapter in which I drew upon my ripened memories. The rest was the effect of immediate observation and research in the atmosphere of the object. The effect of the research I was disposed to value most, because it cost me the most labor, all manner of studious Inquiry being alien to me, while to see things, and paint them as I saw them, was evermore a delight in which there was never the sense of fatigue. I still rather wonder at the number of the books I must have turned over, and actually in some cases read through, to get at that historical stufi' but I do not mind own ing that here I had the help of the curiously gifted and variously lettered house-mate elsewhere mentioned, who transcribed sheaves of notes for me in the Library of St. Mark. I could not use them all, and a very Slight scrutiny of the result might prove that I liked best to use those which were most pictorial and dramatic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the History of Venice, Vol. 1 These Studies are intended to illustrate Venetian history by dwelling upon certain crucial moments and significant episodes in the formation, growth, and decline of the Republic, by drawing attention to the Constitutional, Financial, Commercial, and Diplomatic development of the State, by an examination of its attitude towards the printing press, the book trade and ecclesiastical censorship, and by recounting picturesque events, such as the career of the alchemist Bragadin and the Spanish Conspiracy, which are symptomatic of decline. The history of Venice is full of similar topics, and these Essays do not pretend to cover the whole field; there remain vital questions like the Fourth Crusade, the colonial policy of the Republic, her navy, and so on, to which I may, perhaps, some time return. I have selected my subjects from every period of Venetian history, beginning with the foundation of Rialto and closing with the relations between the Republic and the Commonwealth of England. Bishop Creighton once suggested that it might be possible to write the history of Venice in a series of Essays; he also added that "Venice is a Kultur Stadt, yet its Kultur is not obvious in its history. The impression which it produced on Europe in the days of its greatness is not the same impression which it now makes on the modern mind.
