Thirty years ago the materials for this study were meager and unrelated, the few books that were available being little more than compilations of meaningless facts. But with the recognition of the value of this study as a factor in professional training and in culture, attention has been directed to the discovery of new material and the preparation of a suitable text to meet the needs. The attempts to encompass within the range of a single volume the whole scope of the subject have, thus far, been failures. But many valuable contributions have been made in special fields, a large number of authors having been content to take one subject each and to treat it exhaustively. It is therefore necessary for the teacher of the history of education to draw upon many sources for material, and then so to relate and present this material to the student that it will accomplish its purpose. This book aims to do away with this necessity, and is the result of several years experience as a teacher of the history of education in a normal school. Its inception was prompted by the desire to direct students in their reading and thought while they were getting at facts. The aim has been to make the study intensive rather than extensive. The plan has been(1) to present to the reader certain fundamental facts together with the suggestion of a discussion;(2) to place before the student questions calculated to incite thought and to encourage research; and(3) to direct this research by suggesting added material to be used much or little as the circumstances will allow. This makes the book adaptable for use in colleges and normal schools with either large or small libraries, or in county normals or reading circles where no libraries are available. More than operatives, more than artisans; there must be some who can see processes as they are related to law, - who, while obedient to law, can throw their own personality into their methods and can make such adaptations of them as varying circumstances may demand. If most teach ers are doomed to be the slaves of routine, there must be some who have the ability to create and to control. In a word, along with the great multitude of mere teachers, there must be a growing body of educators. I cannot but think that in every normal school there are men and women who would love to walk upon these heights, to breathe this freer air, and who would thus see in teaching a fair field for the exercise of their best gifts. The attention of such should be drawn somewhat away from the merely mechanical aspects of teaching, and fixed on those professional studies that will broaden the Iteacher's vision and give him the consciousness of some degree of creative power. A Military Council had found him guilty of being head of the insurrection which had, a few months before, lit the flame of civil war in the city and province. The clergy had openly petitioned the Spanish Premier, when F errer was arrested, to look to the Modern School and its founder for the source of the revolutionary feeling; and the Premier had, instead of rebuking them, promised to do so. When F errer was arrested the prosecution spent many weeks in collecting evidence against him, and granted a free pardon to several men who were implicated in the riot, for testifying against him. These three or four men were the only witnesses out of fifty who would have been heard patiently in a civil court of justice, and even their testimony would at once have.
