It has been impossible to indicate my indebtedness in every case; one reads and assimilates, and then frequently forgets to whom the debt is due; on the other hand, one comes, apparently independently, to some conclusion, and finds perhaps a little later on that some one else has arrived at a similar one. It may, at any rate, be said that every conclusion arrived at, whether independently or through the guidance of other books, has been conscientiously considered by personal examination of the point under investigation.
