Book excerpt: High-Tc cuprate superconductors remain the source of central intellectual challenges for condensed matter physicists two decades after their discovery. Accumulating evidence suggests possible ubiquity of coexisting superconducting and density wave correlations in the ground state of these materials. As both correlations in their spatiotemporally incoherent forms can in principle produce a pseudogap in the excitation spectrum, the nature of the pseudogap widely seen in cuprates above Tc comes to forefront of debate. I have been trying to address the relationship triangle between the pseudogap, superconductivity and density waves, by mainly using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the momentum spaces of single-layer La-based (La214) and Bi-based (Bi2201) cuprates. In this thesis, I first talk about our ARPES-neutron scattering joint effort (in collaboration with Tohoku University) in the stripe-ordered state of La214. We found around the 1/8 doping level a dual nature of the pseudogap (in LBCO) and a dual nature of the spin stripe ordering ground state. The latter will be discussed in the context of a doping-dependent crossover between localized- and itinerant-spin ground-state physics, as demonstrated for the first time in a condensed matter system (1% Fe-doped LSCO). I then focus on our ARPES findings in both the pseudogap and superconducting states of nearly optimally-doped Pb-Bi2201 obtained over unprecedented momentum, energy and temperature ranges. They suggest that the pseudogap is a broken-symmetry state that is density-wave like and distinct from homogeneous superconductivity; it explicitly coexists with coherent superconductivity below Tc, causing a striking, momentum-dependent distortion of the high-Tc ground state. I also include in the appendix our recent observation of symmetry-distinct states (likely derived from the Cu dz orbital) in proximity to the Zhang-Rice singlet that has so far been generally taken as the only relevant electronic building block for cuprates. This finding might profoundly transform our upper-level understanding of high-Tc superconductivity as discussed above. This thesis ends with a chapter which describes my experimental philosophy, speculations and outlook for the near future of this field.

The nature of the pairing mechanism in these unconventional superconductors does not seem to be mediated by phonons, as in conventional superconductors, and thus remains a puzzle. The superconducting phase emerges from doping holes (or electrons) into the copper oxide planes of an anti-ferromagnetic Mott insulator, producing a wealth of electronic ordering phenomena in many of the cuprate families. One of these phases is an incommensurate charge ordered state, known since the mid 90's to occur in La-based cuprates along with incommensurate spin ordering and compete with superconductivity. Recent advances in experimental capabilities, notably the ability to perform resonant diffraction experiments with soft x-rays, which can be made sensitive to holes in Cu 3d and O 2p orbitals, have provided new opportunities to learn about these charge ordered states. The study of charge order in cuprate superconductors by resonant soft x-ray scattering is the subject of this thesis.

In Chapter 2, we study how Fulde-Ferrell state, the simplest form of PDW, responds to incident light. The collective motion of the condensate plays a key role; gauge invariance guides us to the correct result. From Chapter 3 to Chapter 7, we construct a pseudogap metallic state by considering quantum fluctuating PDW. We analyze a recent scanning tunneling microscope (STM) discovery of period-8 density waves in the vortex halo of the d-wave superconductor. We put it in the context of the broader pseudogap phenomenology, and compare the experimental results with various PDW-driven models and a charge density wave (CDW) driven model. We propose experiments to distinguish these different models. We present the Bogoliubov bands of PDW. We discuss fluctuating PDW from the general perspective of fluctuating superconductivity. We discuss how Bogoliubov bands evolve when the superconducting order parameter is fluctuating. We compare theoretical predictions with existing experiments on angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), infrared conductivity, diamagnetism, and lattice symmetry breaking. The material presented here is based on Ref. [38, 41, 40]. Ref. [39] is not discussed in this thesis but was completed during my time at MIT.

Book excerpt: In this thesis chemical and epitaxial degrees of freedom are used to manipulate charge and spin ordering phenomena in two families of transition metal oxides, while taking advantage of state-of-the-art resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) methods to characterize their microscopic origin in a comprehensive manner. First, the relationship of charge density wave order to both magnetism and the "pseudogap" phenomenon is systematically examined as a function of charge-carrier doping and isovalent chemical substitution in single crystals of a copper oxide high-temperature superconductor. Then, in copper oxide thin films, an unusual three-dimensionally long-range-ordered charge density wave state is discovered, which persists to much higher temperatures than charge-ordered states in other high-temperature superconductors. By combining crystallographic and spectroscopic measurements, the origin of this phenomenon is traced to the epitaxial relationship with the underlying substrate. This discovery opens new perspectives for the investigation of charge order and its influence on the electronic properties of the cuprates. In a separate set of RXS experiments on superlattices with alternating nickel and dysprosium oxides, several temperature- and magnetic-field-induced magnetic phase transitions are discovered. These observations are explained in a model based on transfer of magnetic order and magneto-crystalline anisotropy between the Ni and Dy subsystems, thus establishing a novel model system for the interplay between transition-metal and rare-earth magnetism.

Surprisingly the resistivity of mercury ceased at 4.2 K and this phenomenon was known as superconductivity. He realized the importance of this discovery in producing large magnetic fieldspl. delateIt was realized that superconductivity is in a new thermodynamic state with peculiar electric and magnetic properties. This paved the way to discover more superconductors. Simple elements such as Tin, Indium or lead showed the highest critical temperature (Tc) 7.2 K. They were called as Type 1 superconductors. Niobium-nitride was found to superconduct at 16 K at 1941 and Vanadium-silicon showed superconductive properties at 17.5 K at 1953. Nb alloys and binary or more complex compounds such as Nb3Sn (Tc – 18 K), Nb-Ti (Tc -9 K), Ga, V with Tc,23 K became type II superconductors. Thereafter, there was not much improvement in the development of superconductor although wonderful applications were expected from superconductors. After three decades, Fullerenes, like ceramic superconductors, are discovered. A decade ago MgB2 was discovered with Tc = 39 K. These superconductors were routinely produced into formof wires for producing larger magnetic fields. In all these cases cooling was effectively done by liquid Helium. A comprehensive microscopic theory of superconductivity in metals was proposed in 1957 by John Bardeen, Leon Cooper and Robert Schrieffer (the so-called “BCS” theory) for which they received the Nobel Prize in Physics. In a major breakthrough, George Bednorz and Karl Mueller discovered a brittle ceramic superconductivity in the family of cuprates at 30 K in 1986 and a new era began. Inspired by the work of Bednorz and Mueller on high temperature superconductivity (HTS), Paul Chu and his associates at the University of Houston discovered in 1987, 123 compounds. That is, YBCO (Yttrium1- Barium2-Copper3- Oxygen7) and iso-structural RBCO (Rare-earth1-Barium2-Copper3-Oxygen7) have a Tc of 93 K. Prior to 1987, all superconducting materials had lower critical temperatures (Tc’s) and therefore functioned only at temperatures near the boiling point of liquid helium (4.2 K) or liquid hydrogen (20.28 K), with the highest being Nb3Ge at 23 K. They were known as low temperature superconductors. YBCO was the first material to become superconducting above 77 K, (boiling point of liquid nitrogen) and subsequently a series of high temperature superconducting materials were discovered. These superconducting materials are widely known as High temperature superconductors as these Tc’s exceeded the limit prescribed by BCS theory. HTSCs are potentially valuable as liquid nitrogen is cheaper than liquid helium. YBCO possesses superior superconducting and physical properties. YBCO receiver coils in NMR-spectrometers have improved the resolution NMR spectrometers by a factor of 3 compared to that achievable with conventional coils. Paul Chu’s group holds the current Tc-record of 164 K in the mercury barium based cuprate superconductor under pressure. Their work led to a rapid succession of new high temperature superconducting materials, ushering in a new era in material science, chemistry and technology. Added to this the structure of Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu2O10(BiSCCO) high temperature superconductive compound having T= 110 K was reported. In 1993, mercuric-cuprates, perovskite ceramic superconductors with the transition temperatures Tc =138 K was also reported.

After the discovery of superconductivity (HTSC) in doped perovskites, it was realized that the HTSC appears in an unknown complex electronic phase of c- densed matter. In the early years, all theories of HTSC were focused on the physics of a homogeneous 2D metal with large electron–electron correlations or on a 2D polaron gas. Only after 1990, a novel paradigm started to grow where this 2D metallic phase is described as an inhomogeneous metal. This was the outcome of several experimental evidences of phase separation at low doping. Since 1992, a series of conferences on phase separation were organized to allow scientists to get together to discuss the phase separation and related issues. Following the discovery by the Rome group in 1992 that “the charges move freely mainly in one direction like the water running in the grooves in the corrugated iron foil,” a new scenario to understand superconductivity in the superconductors was open. Because the charges move like rivers, the physics of these materials shifts toward the physics of novel mesoscopic heterostructures and complex electronic solids. Therefore, understanding the striped phases in the perovskites not only provides an opportunity to understand the anomalous metallic state of cuprate superconductors, but also suggests a way to design new materials of technological importance. Indeed, the stripes are becoming a field of general scientific interest.
