The principles outlined in the former work were derived from a study of dramatic art in general, without particular reference to any single period; but the principles outlined in the present work have been derived mainly from a study of the drama of to-day. In this growing age of stagecraft, it is necessary that criticism should bestir itself to keep astride with the rapid revolutions in dramatic artistry that are being effected before our very eyes. The Theory of the Theatre dealt chiefly with principles inherited by the present from the past: but Studies in Stagecraft deals chiefly with principles that seem destined to be bequeathed by the present to the future. Most of the studies included in this volume have appeared, in earlier versions, in one or another of the magazines in which, in recent years, I have conducted departments of dramatic criticism, - namely, The Bookman, Vogue, Everybody's Magazine, and Dress and Vanity Fair. One chapter has been compounded from two papers contributed to Art and Progress. To the proprietors of these publications I am indebted for the privilege of quoting from my contributions to their pages. It is scarcely necessary to add that these studies have been diligently revised and, in many passages, entirely rewritten. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Play of Today: Studies in Play-Structure for the Student and the Theatre-Goer It is unfortunate, however, not to enjoy anything but laughter in the theater. For even if the exhausted moderns who profess to care for nothing but fun could see farcical plays continually, they might grow as tired of them as Of everything else. But good farce is always so rare as to limit the theatergoing of those who tolerate no other sort Of play. Depending solely upon mirth for the restoration of our jaded faculties. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Movement in the Theatre I have a certain respect for authority, but very little respect for what is commonly taken (like medi cine) as authoritative criticism. If a point of view has been established in writing these essays, it is that of the student. The authority necessarily judges by set standards, and when vital changes come he is all at sea; whereas the student is free to seek gold where he will. Thus I have sifted the sands of many a new current - and here the resulting treas ures are offered to him who has patience to read. If the authority complain that the opierings have not the sanction of time, I may only retort that I believe the over-enthusiastic student is a better guide than the over-cautious critic. Nothing has been put down here in haste or Without thought. If my judgments still fail - if I seem too tolerant toward the things that are new - it must be because futurism appeals to me more than archaaology as a force for progress in art. In writing of the arts of the theatre I would rather be a futurist than an archivist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The individual studies are neither regular histories nor collections of critical essays written from one particular point of View; rather they are books for any reader seeking a full and informed participation in the literature and drama of which they treat. Because they are the result of the collaboration of groups of writers with varied skills and interests, each book offers not one guide but several, and reflects many kinds of appreciation: This volume on Jacobean theatre is the first of the series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University Studies of the University of Nebraska, Vol. 13 Companies in all the public theatres Shifted and changed like satellites in erratic orbits about central suns. None were stable. Uncertain financial conditions, internal differences, or other theatrical troubles were the common causes. Almost every change of company can be traced to financial difficulties. More than an equal share of these troubles huddled on the backs of the Burbages in connection with the Theatre and its companies from the first. Briefly may we survey the troubled years that led up to the organization of the burbage-shakespeare company and the building of the Globe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elizabethan Playhouse, and Other Studies The genial reception given to my earlier book on the Elizabethan Playbouse has encouraged me to issue this Second Series of studies. My chief aim has been, as before, to throw additional light on the obscurities of the Eliza bethan Stage, (and to emphasize the remarkable Vitality of its conventions by demonstrating how many of them contrived to Wind their tendrils round the trunk of early picture-stage dramaturgy. We sometimes forget that if there have been growth and decadence since Shakespeare's time, there has also been a certain measure of continuity) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
