Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Several Literatures Several years ago, Mr. Andrew Carnegie, who is always doing something interesting and unexpected, gave to the public his opinion as to the literary and ethical value of Homer. Not a few persons were in clined to mock at this deliverance and to recall the old maxim that the cobbler should stick to his last. Mr. Carnegie, they said, might know more about iron and steel than any other living man; but why should he put himself forward as an authority on Classical literature? He himself would certainly not have listened with much respect to the views of Professor Gildersleeve or the late Sir Richard Jebb on the subject of iron tubing and steel rails. Much study about authors whose books the student has never read is of doubt ful utility. A wiser plan is to use a very brief account of the literature in connection with a considerable amount of reading in the literature itself arranged chronologically. In studying Part II, therefore, emphasis should be placed upon the sug gested readings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Two Literatures My dear Moore, Do you remember, at the time when we were both living in the Temple, and our talks used to begin with midnight, and go on until the first glimmerings of dawn shivered among the trees, your trees and mine; do you remember how often we have discussed, well, I suppose everything which I speak of in these studies in the two literatures which we both chiefly care about? Our discussions, indeed, never came to an end; for they were the interchange of ideas, the noting, for one another's benefit (or, say, amusement) of sensations; and just because we both wanted to get at the truth of things, and both realized how many aspects truth has, neither of us had the least interest in getting the better of one another in an argument, or in thinking of any argument as finally settled. On first principles we were always, I think, agreed; and how often in regard to individual applications of them! Has either of us ever doubted that a work of art has but one reason for existence, that it should be a work of art, a moment of the eternity of beauty? One forgets, sometimes, that it has entered into the brains of men to doubt anything so obvious. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The ground work of the essay on Pope, republished by the courtesy of Messrs. Longmans, is to be found in Fraser's Magazine; but the author has also made use, with the permission of the proprietors, of several papers on the same subject printed in the Pall Mall Gazette and in the Athenwum. Thanks are due to the editors of the Spectator, for authority to insert the Wesley article; and to Messrs. Smith, Elder, and Cc., for the use of the remaining essays. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies in Literature That these brief chapters may prove helpful to readers of books who desire to become students of literature, is the hope which the writer ventures to cherish in the face of defects more obvious to him than to the most unsympathetic critic. These studies are not critical but interpretative; they are neither exhaustive nor inclusive; they are mainly hints and suggestions. Each chapter might be elaborated into a volume. If they serve to indicate the leading lines of literary development, the fundamental divisions and distinctions, the deep and vital tendencies, they will accomplish the end for which they were written. That they represent deep convictions concerning the significance of literature rather than a purely critical attitude, will be apparent to the most indifferent reader. The best possible reason that can be given for the preparation of a work of this kind, is that it furnishes to both teachers and students a method of study that necessarily leads to certain definite and much valued results, among which are the following: A better appreciation of artistic merit in poetry; a knowledge of. The relation of the mythology of Greece and Rome to the poetry of every European nation and language of modern times; the power to use this golden key. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of censorship in modern Britain For Victorian lawmakers and judges, the question of whether a book should be allowed to circulate freely depended on whether it was sold to readers whose mental and moral capacities were in doubt, by which they meant the increasingly literate and enfranchised working classes. The law stayed this way even as society evolved. In 1960, in the obscenity trial over D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover, the prosecutor asked the jury, "Is it a book that you would even wish your wife or your servants to read?" Christopher Hilliard traces the history of British censorship from the Victorians to Margaret Thatcher, exposing the tensions between obscenity law and a changing British society. Hilliard goes behind the scenes of major obscenity trials and uncovers the routines of everyday censorship, shedding new light on the British reception of literary modernism and popular entertainments such as the cinema and American-style pulp fiction and comic books. He reveals the thinking of lawyers and the police, authors and publishers, and politicians and ordinary citizens as they wrestled with questions of freedom and morality. He describes how supporters and opponents of censorship alike tried to remake the law as they reckoned with changes in sexuality and culture that began in the 1960s. Based on extensive archival research, this incisive and multifaceted book reveals how the issue of censorship challenged British society to confront issues ranging from mass literacy and democratization to feminism, gay rights, and multiculturalism.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Spanish-American Literature The purpose of the present volume is to introduce to Eng lish readers a continental culture that they have too long neglected. Not that we have been alone in our neglect; Spain itself, the mother nation of Spanish America's grow ing republics, has until very recently ignored the letters of its numerous offspring. Owing to the meager acquaintance that our reading pub lic has with spanish-american literature, a book of purely critical essays is at this time inadvisable; I have, there fore, in the following chapters, greely mingled excerpts, exposition and a modicum of criticism, in the hope of thus providing an incentive for further delving into the authors and the books commented upon. Whatever criticism I have written has been determined by a flexible attitude, I have sought to suggest rather than to define. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Mediaeval Life and Literature After receiving his bachelor's degree he remained another year in New Haven as a graduate student. During that time he devoted himself with increased ardor to the special branches of study in which from the outset he had been interested. In the following year he was made tutor in English. This position he held until 1890, when he was appointed assistant pro fessor of the same subject. At the meeting. Of the Corporation of the University in May, 1893, he was elected by it to the chair of Rhetoric and Belles Lettres. Happily married to a wife of congenial tastes, who speedily learned to sympathize with him in the studies which he had made peculiarly his own, he had every reason to expect a long career of usefulness, which would be attended with distinction to himself and would confer distinction upon the institution with which he was connected. But his health had never been vigorous, and in the very summer vacation fol lowing his appointment a fever, which came upon him almost without warning, and which seemed at first of slight importance, carried him off after an illness that lasted little more than a week. He died on the 25th of July, 1893, at the age of thirty-three. He lies buried at Litchfield. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Literature: Some Words About Chaucer, and Other Essays Everything concerning the most cheerful, most natural, and most sympathetic of all English poets, Chaucer, has come to be of interest. Whether his name had originally anything to do with footwear or not, or whether it was derived from some small office about the court will perhaps soon be decided by Mr. Skeat; but there is no question that, even in this apparently unimportant matter of philology, the public testifies more than usual concern. The interest in Chaucer is no doubt due to his incomparable charm as a storyteller, the human quality in his poems, and the increase of respect for the English language among English-speaking people. Chaucer has been examined by the analysts of speech from every point of view, and what the English have left undone the Germans have minutely completed; but there is one thing which most interpreters of Chaucer have failed to grasp, and that is the impossibility of judging the standards of the fourteenth century by those of the nineteenth. As an axiom they are willing to admit that it is illogical to judge the ethical point of view of one age considered from the changed attitude of another. Every expositor of literary history, from Dryden to Lounsbury, from Voltaire to Taine, admits this; but only in the abstract. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools By an arrangement of type the book is adapted for various courses of study. It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Whatever of merit the book contains is largely due to him; the faults are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
