This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original articles and surveys, emerging from a 2011 conference in Bertinoro, Italy, addresses recent advances in linear and nonlinear aspects of the theory of partial differential equations (PDEs). Phase space analysis methods, also known as microlocal analysis, have continued to yield striking results over the past years and are now one of the main tools of investigation of PDEs. Their role in many applications to physics, including quantum and spectral theory, is equally important. Key topics addressed in this volume include: *general theory of pseudodifferential operators *Hardy-type inequalities *linear and non-linear hyperbolic equations and systems *Schrödinger equations *water-wave equations *Euler-Poisson systems *Navier-Stokes equations *heat and parabolic equations Various levels of graduate students, along with researchers in PDEs and related fields, will find this book to be an excellent resource. Book excerpt: This book provides the first coherent account of the area of analysis that involves the Heisenberg group, quantization, the Weyl calculus, the metaplectic representation, wave packets, and related concepts. This circle of ideas comes principally from mathematical physics, partial differential equations, and Fourier analysis, and it illuminates all these subjects. The principal features of the book are as follows: a thorough treatment of the representations of the Heisenberg group, their associated integral transforms, and the metaplectic representation; an exposition of the Weyl calculus of pseudodifferential operators, with emphasis on ideas coming from harmonic analysis and physics; a discussion of wave packet transforms and their applications; and a new development of Howe's theory of the oscillator semigroup.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Besides their intrinsic mathematical interest, geometric partial differential equations (PDEs) are ubiquitous in many scientific, engineering and industrial applications. They represent an intellectual challenge and have received a great deal of attention recently. The purpose of this volume is to provide a missing reference consisting of self-contained and comprehensive presentations. It includes basic ideas, analysis and applications of state-of-the-art fundamental algorithms for the approximation of geometric PDEs together with their impacts in a variety of fields within mathematics, science, and engineering. About every aspect of computational geometric PDEs is discussed in this and a companion volume. Topics in this volume include stationary and time-dependent surface PDEs for geometric flows, large deformations of nonlinearly geometric plates and rods, level set and phase field methods and applications, free boundary problems, discrete Riemannian calculus and morphing, fully nonlinear PDEs including Monge-Ampere equations, and PDE constrained optimization Each chapter is a complete essay at the research level but accessible to junior researchers and students. The intent is to provide a comprehensive description of algorithms and their analysis for a specific geometric PDE class, starting from basic concepts and concluding with interesting applications. Each chapter is thus useful as an introduction to a research area as well as a teaching resource, and provides numerous pointers to the literature for further reading The authors of each chapter are world leaders in their field of expertise and skillful writers. This book is thus meant to provide an invaluable, readable and enjoyable account of computational geometric PDEs

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes the texts of the survey lectures given by plenary speakers at the 11th International ISAAC Congress held in Växjö, Sweden, on 14-18 August, 2017. It is the purpose of ISAAC to promote analysis, its applications, and its interaction with computation. Analysis is understood here in the broad sense of the word, including differential equations, integral equations, functional analysis, and function theory. With this objective, ISAAC organizes international Congresses for the presentation and discussion of research on analysis. The plenary lectures in the present volume, authored by eminent specialists, are devoted to some exciting recent developments, topics including: local solvability for subprincipal type operators; fractional-order Laplacians; degenerate complex vector fields in the plane; lower bounds for pseudo-differential operators; a survey on Morrey spaces; localization operators in Signal Theory and Quantum Mechanics. Thanks to the accessible style used, readers only need a basic command of Calculus. This book will appeal to scientists, teachers, and graduate students in Mathematics, in particular Mathematical Analysis, Probability and Statistics, Numerical Analysis and Mathematical Physics.

Book excerpt: The prime goal of this monograph, which comprises a total of five volumes, is to derive sharp spectral asymptotics for broad classes of partial differential operators using techniques from semiclassical microlocal analysis, in particular, propagation of singularities, and to subsequently use the variational estimates in “small” domains to consider domains with singularities of different kinds. In turn, the general theory (results and methods developed) is applied to the Magnetic Schrödinger operator, miscellaneous problems, and multiparticle quantum theory. In this volume the methods developed in Volumes I and II are applied to the Schrödinger and Dirac operators in smooth settings in dimensions 2 and 3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an introductory textbook about nonlinear dynamics of PDEs, with a focus on problems over unbounded domains and modulation equations. The presentation is example-oriented, and new mathematical tools are developed step by step, giving insight into some important classes of nonlinear PDEs and nonlinear dynamics phenomena which may occur in PDEs. The book consists of four parts. Parts I and II are introductions to finite- and infinite-dimensional dynamics defined by ODEs and by PDEs over bounded domains, respectively, including the basics of bifurcation and attractor theory. Part III introduces PDEs on the real line, including the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the Ginzburg-Landau equation. These examples often occur as simplest possible models, namely as amplitude or modulation equations, for some real world phenomena such as nonlinear waves and pattern formation. Part IV explores in more detail the connections between such complicated physical systems and the reduced models. For many models, a mathematically rigorous justification by approximation results is given. The parts of the book are kept as self-contained as possible. The book is suitable for self-study, and there are various possibilities to build one- or two-semester courses from the book.

In turn, the general theory (results and methods developed) is applied to the Magnetic Schrödinger operator, miscellaneous problems, and multiparticle quantum theory. In this volume the local spectral asymptotics of Volume I in the regular part of the domain are combined with variational estimates in the vicinity of singularities, and global asymptotics are derived in the general form. They are then applied to multiple cases and asymptotics with respect to a spectral parameter. Finally, cases in which only general methods but not the results can be applied (non-standard asymptotics) are studied.

Book excerpt: This textbook is a completely revised, updated, and expanded English edition of the important Analyse fonctionnelle (1983). In addition, it contains a wealth of problems and exercises (with solutions) to guide the reader. Uniquely, this book presents in a coherent, concise and unified way the main results from functional analysis together with the main results from the theory of partial differential equations (PDEs). Although there are many books on functional analysis and many on PDEs, this is the first to cover both of these closely connected topics. Since the French book was first published, it has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Romanian, Greek and Chinese. The English edition makes a welcome addition to this list.

Book excerpt: This memoir is devoted to the proof of a well-posedness result for the gravity water waves equations, in arbitrary dimension and in fluid domains with general bottoms, when the initial velocity field is not necessarily Lipschitz. Moreover, for two-dimensional waves, the authors consider solutions such that the curvature of the initial free surface does not belong to L2. The proof is entirely based on the Eulerian formulation of the water waves equations, using microlocal analysis to obtain sharp Sobolev and Hölder estimates. The authors first prove tame estimates in Sobolev spaces depending linearly on Hölder norms and then use the dispersive properties of the water-waves system, namely Strichartz estimates, to control these Hölder norms.

Book excerpt: This monograph serves as a much-needed, self-contained reference on the topic of modulation spaces. By gathering together state-of-the-art developments and previously unexplored applications, readers will be motivated to make effective use of this topic in future research. Because modulation spaces have historically only received a cursory treatment, this book will fill a gap in time-frequency analysis literature, and offer readers a convenient and timely resource. Foundational concepts and definitions in functional, harmonic, and real analysis are reviewed in the first chapter, which is then followed by introducing modulation spaces. The focus then expands to the many valuable applications of modulation spaces, such as linear and multilinear pseudodifferential operators, and dispersive partial differential equations. Because it is almost entirely self-contained, these insights will be accessible to a wide audience of interested readers. Modulation Spaces will be an ideal reference for researchers in time-frequency analysis and nonlinear partial differential equations. It will also appeal to graduate students and seasoned researchers who seek an introduction to the time-frequency analysis of nonlinear dispersive partial differential equations.
