Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Old Testament Characters Not only is the attempt made to interpret each character studied in the light of the immediate historic situation, and to derive valuable personal instruction from utterances, acts and manifest motives, but the relation of each character to a greater national and world move ment is to some extent considered. This requires a study of the movement itself. It is sought to know how each age, with its accumulation from the past, grew out of the past and beyond itself and moulded its characters, and how in turn each character moulded his own age and influenced the future. We speak, for instance, with the peculiar accent of our native district, and - a matter of much more consequence -learn almost certainly to copy in our lives the manners and morals of our ordinary associates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies of Old Testament Heroes The world will never cease to love the heroic, whether it is found xin man or woman, boy or girl. Even better is the fact that people are rapidly learn ing that heroes are not all of the same pattern, and that they are to be discerned in quiet scenes no less than in those of war and adventure. For a long time the Old Testament has been a wonderful book of heroes, because of the interest aroused by some of its characters, but the circle of these is growing wider, as the real spirit and work of others come to be known, so that now Abel, Amos, and Isaiah are felt to be heroic, along with David, Josiah, and Daniel. Then the great value of these and other characters of the Bible is that they are heroes for God and goodness, for right and for the true religion, and not merely for something that ends with this world. There is here presented a number of biographies of men who were the outstanding and strategic lead ers of their own times. They not only moulded the thought and directed the action of the ages in which they lived but to-day are even more influential. They realized, were profoundly influenced by, and worked enthusiastically for ideals and principles which still lead us on. They had their faults. They were very human. They made mistakes, of which they bitterly repented, but above every other desire was that of bringing in the kingdom of God on earth this is their glory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Moses to Qumran: Studies in the Old Testament F OR some years I have been requested by many friends to publish a volume of collected essays, and have only delayed to respond to the request because I lacked the time to prepare them for re - issue. Even now it has been impossible to give them the sort of revision I should have liked. The text is only slightly modified here and there, but I have made a number of addi tions to the footnotes, taking some account of publications which have been issued since these studies first appeared. It has been impossible to do this as thoroughly as I could have wished, and I express in advance my regret for any important omission. To make reference to everything that has appeared with any bearing on the many subjects here touched on would have given to these essays an encyclopaedic character that I cannot hope to achieve. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God in the Old Testament: Studies in Gradual Preception The use of the Old Testament in religious training is still a problem, both to teachers and parents. There is a tendency in some quarters to ignore the Old Testament or to use it only as a foil to the New. This is unfortunate as the positive contribution of the Hebrew Scriptures to the maintenance of personal religion is far greater than such neglect or depreciation would suggest. In dealing with this problem we need a combination of critical honesty and fearlessness with a sense of continued indebtedness to the record of God's progressive revelation. Such a union of criticism and devotion may be found in the present volume. It is the work of one who was himself a thoughtful, experienced and inspiring teacher. The manuscript was left practically complete but not finally revised by the author when he was taken from us by an early death. In many places it lacks the literary finish which is found in his other published work and which no editor can give without going beyond his office. With the minimum of necessary revision the book is now published, as a token of gratitude and love, by those who were Robert Aytoun's students at Woodbrooke. The book itself will show something of his qualities as a teacher, but it is only fitting that the witness of the book be prefaced by some few particulars of his life and character.
