That some of our generic distinctions may be invalidated by more extended research, is just as likely as that new generic types may present themselves among the collections from ocean beds yet unexplored, or from geological formations as yet unscrutinised. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Recent Foraminifera of Great Britain When I first contemplated the preparation of a Monograph on the British Foraminifera, I proposed appending to it a general history of this class of objects; reviewing the various modifications of their structure, their zoological affinities, and their geological history. The Council of the Ray Society have thought it desirable that these subjects should be more ela borated than could be done in the introduction to a monograph, and they have consequently intrusted my friend Dr. Carpenter with the preparation of a separate volume, embracing the entire history of the Foraminifera. In such competent. Hands the work cannot fail to become a valuable addition to English scientific literature. When it appears, though following the present volume in order of publication, Dr. Carpenter's publication will be the true introduction to mine. Such an introduction is essential to a large number of students; for, though of late years many inquirers have paid special attention to these minute creatures, it is surprising how'much ignorance still exists respecting their philosophy and general affinities; an ignorance that reﬂects itself in most of the works that have been devoted to their classification and description. Being thus relieved from a laborious though pleasant duty, I need only examine such questions as specially relate to our British forms of these organisms. Another marked feature of difference among the specimens of this Collection, is the depression or elevation of the central region relatively to the peripheral. In what I have assumed as the typical form, the central region presents the same general level with the rest, though the umbilicus itself is often marked by a prominent tubercle. In such forms as are represented in Plate 111. Figs. 1 and 2, the umbilical region is rather depressed than elevated; and this depression is often observed in older specimens whose early growth has taken place on.this type. But there is a group of specimens, of which three successive ages are represented in Plate III. Figs. 3, 4, 5, 8, that have the whole central region so exceedingly prominent as to form a cone, -whose apex is marked either by one large tubercle, or by a cluster of smaller ones; and this conformation gives so peculiar a physiognomy to the shells which present it, that few systematists would hesi tate in placing them apart as specifically different from the rest. On a careful compari son of a large number of individuals, however, it becomes apparent that this difference, like the preceding, is gradational; every degree of prominence being traceable from the individuals which have the umbilicus marked only by a tubercle, as in fig. 7, through those In which the region generally is slightly elevated, as in fig. 8, to those 111 which it presents the most marked projection, as in figs. 3 5. We shall presently find (ﬂ' 153) that this difference depends mainly on the degree in which the investing layer, prolonged from the later convolutions over the surface of the earlier, is separated from that surface by the extension of the alar prolongations of the chambers of the investing whorls; as to which point there is a most remarkable diversity, not only among different individuals, but between the several convolutions of the same individual. At the beginning I had no idea of presenting this work to the scientific world. When I began the study ofthe foraminifera I had no knowledge whatever of that which had been done in this branch of science. After I commenced look ing up the subject the references accumulated so rapidly that I thought it might be well to collect and put them in shape so that they might be useful to others as well as to myself. After three years' labor I applied to Mr. H. B. Brady, F. R. S., for information pertaining to the subject. He at once informed me that he had in press a bibliography of the same character, and kindly offered to give me any assistance he could. When the British Association for the Advancement of Science met at Montreal, in 1884, I met in New York Mr. James Thom son, F. G. S., a member from Scotland, to whom I Spoke of my work, asking his advice about proceeding with it. He urged me to continue, and to finish it, as it would become accessible to a great number of workers who could not possess the valuable monograph of Mr. H. B. Brady.
