Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies for Personal Workers These studies attempt a general survey of the subject Of personal work on the part Of the Christian believer. They discuss the principal features Of the subject, and seek to answer many questions which arise in the various experiences which are most common in the attempt to win men to Christ. The leader may wish to supplement the suggestions Offered, but he will find here a sufficient basis for the Study. The studies are arranged with a View to a weekly meeting of a Class of Personal Workers. For six days of the week there is a page a day to be considered. Sug gestions for the Class given the seventh day are not only for the purpose Of giving direction to the discussions in the class, where the review of the six days' reading will take place, but also to assist the individual reader in seizing upon the salient points in each day's lesson. Thus each day, by turning to these suggestions at the end Of the study, he will find assistance in this particular. In the Class the attempt should be made to discuss the experiences Of the workers, who will apply the principles involved to their own efforts to win men. Names need not be mentioned, but should be remembered in the Prayer Circle. If the friendship of the Circle should justify the confidence, the names may be given, so each one can be remembered by name each day in prayer. Moreover, others in the Class may be able to assist in winning these to Christ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Intellectuals and the Wage Workers: A Study in Educational Psychoanalysis A materialistic life is not a life but a living death. Yet without bread we cannot contemplate spiritual things. Those economic units, in consequence - employers' as sociations, co-operative consumer's societies, farmers' leagues, industrial, occupational, and craft unions grow ever more and more liberally and firmly defined, autonomous, eager, with a sense of a part to play. Will they accentuate the crudities of contemporary class wars? Or will they come more and more to act in uni son, in a spiritual efficiency, to make this the happiest world upon which mankind has yet gazed? One after another artists, educators, and scientists are springing up who are brave enough to assert that they have suggestions to make both to these economic subdivisions and to the great states which enclose them and seek to arbitrate their differences. Therefore it is fitting that such artists, lovers of art, scientists, and teachers, those who aspire to bring the various crafts and professions closer to science and the fine arts - for' the sake of art and science quite as much as for the sake of the crafts and professions - should unite even as these industrial groups have united, or, better yet, should fuse themselves in union with the various ap propriate industrial groups to form associations not for personal aggrandizement but for a richer and more spontaneous and more rational personal expression. One of these, The Education of the Workers -to be called Volume I because it is logically the first of the trilogy - will be a historical study of the factors which have produced the existing educational equipment of the adult Workers as portrayed in this volume. It will attempt to show why the workers are what they are by revealing the schooling which from 1850 onwards has been bestowed upon them in their childhood and adolescence. Volume III, The Environment of the Workers, will con sider those agencies and influences, such as Work, Home, Church, Evening School, Reading, Public-house, Picture Palace, Music Hall, which are at the present time moulding the personalities of the adult workers. In it will be tabulated much of the information which in these pages is scattered throughout a number of personal studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Work A number Of my fellow-workers have been urging me to present in some permanent form, especially for the Christian students in our institutions of learning, results of my experience in the study and practice of personal work. Whether my compliance with the request of these friends will supply a need, or even present new thoughts, in connection with this important part of Christian activity, can only be determined when the following pages have gone upon their mission. I am under special Obligations to the International Committee of Young Men's Christian Associations for the liberty to quote from or use its valuable pamphlets on this subject, and I take the liberty to arrange desirable texts of Scripture after the method used by Mr. Dyson Hague in Ways to Win. My Imp: is that this book may prove a help to young people who desire to bring men to Jesus. My ambition is to write it in such a way that the perusal Of its pages may incite the reader to more earnest religious effort. My prayer is that the Master, in whose name it is written, will approve it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and the Workers: A Study Guide for the Use of Study Circles, Classes, and Individual Students on Questions Arising Out of the Great European War The aim has been to be as thorough and yet as concise as Of course it is not for a moment contemplated that any group of working men will attempt all the courses here sketched out. Such an attempt would require the lifetime of a professional student. But previous interest or study has made different groups or individuals eager to raise and try to answer certain questions, and we hope that any such may find in this little book suggestions as to how he may set about solving the problem which he desires to raise. We have only con sidered serious students who are ready to take time and trouble. Almost any one of the sections outlined is enough for a three years' course. For, after all, what the war has brought home to us is not so much our need of knowledge in order that we may contribute to a sound public Opinion on the crisis, but rather the vital importance of entire fields of study which hitherto have been to a large extent neglected. I have spoken of our aim but must say in honesty that none of the credit for the labour represented by this book belongs to me but I am glad, as President of the to introduce to our members the product of much wea. Experience and toil. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Scattered through the reports of private investigating agen cies and government commissions there is a vast amount of valuable information on methods of making scientific investigations of social condi tions by first hand contact with the facts - that is, by field work. This book gathers together the well tested methods and techniques and attempts to present them in an accurate and practical form. The treatment is not exhaustive, yet it is believed that all of the significant points are touched upon with sufficient detail to make the book useful as a manual to field workers. The theoretical princi ples underlying scientific method applied to the investigation of social conditions are outlined with sufficient thoroughness to make the book sugges tive to students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Months in a Workshop: A Practical Study When the present work appeared in Germany, it produced a profound sensation and led to important social action in several directions. The chief result was perhaps the formation of a Society, the Evangelical Social Congress, for the study of social questions by adherents of the Evangelical Church; and of this Society the author was made Secretary. The Society holds annual gatherings which are notable, and publishes reports of these and also leaflets, its aim being two-fold, viz. to throw a light on the social problems of our day, and to stimulate the conscience of Christian people to a better performance of duty. The story is a very simple one. The author, a theological student, perplexed by conflicting theories and reports touching the lot of the wage-earners, their habits of thought, their struggles and their aspirations, determines to become a wage-earner himself, and, donning the garb of a workman, finds employment in a large manufacturing establishment in industrial Saxony. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Feel better, get done more and become a nicer person” In this age of social media, fake news, individualism and information overload, the certainties we relied on in the past are gone. In our quest for assurance and support, the only seemingly dependable pillar left is other people. So we look to them. But they are unsettled too. And by looking to them, we create and perpetuate our own vicious stress-cycle. As a result, we lose our sensible selves. And we go bananas. But there is good news. If we look around us, there are people who withstand the collective lunacy and stay grounded. They do something that most of us have a hard time doing: they stay themselves. And the best news is that what they can do, you can do too. It doesn’t require any special talents or supernatural powers. It only requires doing. In this amiable, open and accessible book, Jeroen Kraaijenbrink takes you on his personal journey out of Bananaland. Drawing from cognitive psychology, martial arts, Saint Benedict, personal experience, and a wide range of other sources, the book offers a nine-step approach with some remarkably practical advice for keeping a cool head in the collective lunacy. “Free yourself from the collective lunacy and reclaim your calm and sensible self”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prisoners of Poverty: Women Wage-Workers, Their Trades and Their Lives HE chapters making up the present volume were prepared originally as a series of papers for the Sunday edition of The New York Tribune, and were based upon minutest personal research into the conditions described. Sketchy as the record may seem at points, it is a photograph from life; and the various characters, whether employers or employed, were all registered in case corroboration were needed. While research was limited to New York, the facts given are much the same for any large city, and thus have a value beyond their immediate application. No attempt at an understanding of the labor ques tion as it faces us to-day can be successful till knowl edge of its underlying conditions is assured. It is such knowledge that the writer has aimed to present; and it takes more permanent form, not only for the many readers whose steady inter.
