Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies by Members of the Department of Romance Languages With the bankruptcy, then, of the primitive-historic theory, after one hundred years of able effort to support it, in what way should the Chansons de geste be studied? They should be studied as we study any other literary genre, in themselves, for what they are and pretend to be, heroic or romantic poems, written from the 11th to the 14th centuries, reflecting the spirit of those times and a product of those times. They Should be read all together, compared with one another, and their relationships noted. No doubt anyone unfamiliar With the history of epic study will say at once: But surely this has already been done, since it has always been the A B C of literary study of a genre. Nevertheless it is exactly this which has not been done, or, to speak more accurately, where it has been done the results have been disregarded; and for reason. Since it was an article of faith that the present poems depended on some earlier form, every study has endeavored to formulate this something earlier and interpret accordingly the present poems. Download or read book Studies in Romance Linguistics written by Carl Kirschner and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume reflect the numerous interests in the field of Romance languages and Romance linguistics today. A far-ranging amount of Romance data are presented: French, Italian, and Spanish dialect data are crucial to several authors' arguments, Rumanian is the focus of two papers, and many of the papers included discuss overall Romance developments. It is noteworthy that formal approaches to syntax are here regularly applied to historical data (three papers specifically deal with pro-drop phenomena in Old French). Of the papers on phonology, syllabification and linking processes receive much attention.
Book Synopsis Inclusiveness Beyond the (Non)binary in Romance Languages by : Gláucia V. Silva
Download or read book Inclusiveness Beyond the (Non)binary in Romance Languages written by Gláucia V. Silva and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-10 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inclusiveness Beyond the (Non)binary in Romance Languages: Research and Classroom Implementation explores both research and best practices related to inclusive language so that all students, regardless of gender identity, may be active participants in their language learning communities. Given the binary nature of Romance language grammars, it is essential that scholarly inquiry into issues related to (non)binarism be further developed and become more visible, and this volume aims to embed the issue of linguistic inclusivity within broader conversations surrounding social justice to ensure that conversations do not stop with mere linguistic changes. The book is divided into two parts: the first focuses on research related to inclusive and nonbinary forms in Romance languages, while the second highlights teaching practices and encompasses inclusive approaches that go beyond the nonbinary. Although the volume focuses on Romance languages, most (if not all) of the content is applicable to other linguistic contexts. This volume also goes beyond issues of gender inclusivity and includes content that leads to a reflection on issues of equity and social justice more broadly. This edited volume is a resource for scholars whose research focuses on inclusive language and for educators who are interested in learning more about why and how to foster inclusiveness in their language classrooms and in their workplaces.

Download or read book Romance Languages written by Ti Alkire and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-24 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ti Alkire and Carol Rosen trace the changes that led from colloquial Latin to five major Romance languages, those which ultimately became national or transnational languages: Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian. Trends in spoken Latin altered or dismantled older categories in phonology and morphology, while the regional varieties of speech, evolving under diverse influences, formed new grammatical patterns, each creating its own internal regularities. Documentary sources for spoken Latin show the beginnings of this process, which comes to full fruition in the medieval emergence of written Romance languages. This book newly distills the facts into an appealing program of study, including exercises, and makes the difficult issues clear, taking well motivated and sometimes innovative stands. It provides not only an essential guide for those new to the topic, but also a reliable compendium for the specialist.
