Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the job constructs influencing campus recreation undergraduate student workers' satisfaction and retention and how their job satisfaction relates to job retention. The job constructs measured against job satisfaction and retention were job embeddedness, perceived organizational support, perceived organizational prestige, and organizational commitment. An online survey was sent out for 14, four-year, public universities in two southeastern states. A total of 108 undergraduate student employees responded to the survey. Descriptive statistics and a correlation matrix were performed in order to analyze the data and the relationship between the variables. Three regressions were used to measure the significance of the variables relationship. This study's results suggest that those students who are more committed to the organization are more likely to be satisfied with their job. Additionally, those students who are more embedded in their job are more likely to return to their job.

Book excerpt: Campus recreation facilities and programs provide various environments and opportunities outside of the classroom for students to socialize, participate in sports, improve their physical fitness, and learn new skills. Existing research has explored the relationship between participation in campus recreation and the social, academic, and physical impacts it has on the lives of students. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if participation in various types of campus recreation held predictive significance regarding year-over-year retention of first year college students at a large, private university. The predictor variables were participation in club sports, intramural sports, outdoor recreation, student activities events, and usage of the on-campus fitness center. Archival data drawn from the university’s database of records provided a sample of 2,857 students for the 2017-2018 academic year, 2,780 students for the 2018-2019 academic year, and 2,742 students for the 2019-2020 academic year. Logistic regressions were conducted at the 95% confidence interval which produced results indicating statistical significance for the full model for all three years. Of the predictor variables, student activities participation displayed significance all three years, intramural sports participation was significant twice, and fitness center usage was significant once. Odds ratios for the predictor variables revealed that four out of five were positively associated with retention for each academic year. The results from this study add to the existing body of literature that explores the relationship between various types of campus recreation and year-over-year retention. Additionally, these results demonstrate a link between social events and year-over-year retention.

In particular, the focus is on student employee work roles. The Work Design Questionnaire (WDQ) is the instrument used for diagnosis. Student employees are a key component to the successful operations of campus recreation facilities and programs. Understanding student employees' perspectives and experiences of different facets of work design is crucial for professionals in campus recreation in order to develop their student staff into effective employees. An online questionnaire was distributed via e-mail to 423 campus recreation directors from all 50 states. Through the student employees' responses conclusions were drawn to the areas of work design campus recreation professionals should focus on in developing both the student employees and the design of the letter's work. Recommendations from this study include strategies professionals should utilize when managing student employees and how future studies could be designed--Abstract.

Book excerpt: As grant programs dwindle and students are needing to become less reliant on parents to help finance their education, employment while enrolled is shifting from a choice to a near requirement. Collegiate comprehensive recreation programs employ several hundred students annually. Employers must be intentional in creating positions that help meet their needs, but also serve as a co-curricular experience for the student, assisting them in preparation for experiences beyond graduation. This study explores the perceived outcomes of campus recreation employment and the relevance to professional employment. Student employees at a large university with a comprehensive collegiate campus recreation program reported their perceived skill enhancement based on their employment with campus recreation. Data were collected quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative data were collected via a paper and pencil survey, distributed and collected at in-service training meetings. All students, employed in December 2015 and January 2016, were invited to complete the survey. This data were analyzed through a comparison of mean scores, one way ANOVA, and independent samples t test. The qualitative data were collected through a series of focus groups. This data demonstrated additional motivation for pursuing employment and what skills they perceived enhancement in and where they would like to see more improvement. The data revealed that student employees did perceive enhancement in some skill areas, but there was opportunity for improvement in others. Students demonstrated a stronger perceived enhancement of skills related to social work skills than technical work skills. This response pattern held true across each employee area. A statistical significant difference was not found between length of employment, at two years, and skill enhancement. The results of the study demonstrate the need for intentional and purposeful employment experiences that not only complete the day to day functions of the job or unit, but provide learning opportunities that are co-curricular, supplementing the classroom experience.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to examine if the interplay of age and gender impact the level of influence a campus based student recreation center exerts on a student's decision to choose and remain at a college or university. This study is theoretically based in Tinto's Student Engagement Model 1975 and supported by later scholarly work. Data were collected at a single medium sized university in the Western United States using Check Box electronic survey distribution technology and a self-created instrument. Three hundred and sixty-seven completed surveys were analyzed using 2x2 Factorial Analysis of Variance. Results show that gender does not appear to be a factor, however, age does play a significant role. Recommendations for the profession and future research are provided.

Book excerpt: According to the data, the degree to which campus recreation administrators are satisfied with their job is significant in two subscales. Results from this research suggest that supervision and nature of work were the two highest ranking measures of job satisfaction among campus recreation administrators at 4-year institutions. The second part of the Job Satisfaction Survey requested demographic information. Demographic items on the instrument included gender, age, population size of the institution, type of institution (public or private), and years of experience working as a campus recreation administrator. Results from this research suggest that the demographic information was not significant to explain the overall level of job satisfaction.

Book excerpt: What attracts students to a college--academics? recreational sports? the campus recreation center? If you selected all three answers, you are right. Most students choose a college or university for its academic merits, but another key factor in their decision is the recreational sports programs and facilities. Recreational sports are an important component to students' quality of life on campus and to a college's recruitment and retention of students. The National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association contracted Kerr-Downs Research Associates to conduct a nationwide research project to determine the value of recreational sport on college campuses. More than 2,600 students from 16 colleges participated in this study, making it the largest representative group of college students from multiple colleges ever studied with respect to the value of participation in recreational sports. This study examined the value and contributions of recreational sports to participants' lives and documented the buying power of participants in recreational sports. The first of its kind in research, The Value of Recreational Sports in Higher Education makes a strong the case for campus recreational sports programs and facilities that will support the mission of your college into the future.

Book excerpt: Institutions of higher education invest significant amounts of money building state-of-the-art campus recreation facilities in an environment where student fees and debt are increasing, while graduation and retention are declining. This contradictory environment places large investments at the forefront of scrutiny by higher education decision makers. However, this thesis supports the need for campus recreation centers on university campuses through recognizing the important role campus recreation centers play in building community and aiding in social integration among students. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of campus recreation in fostering a sense of community and the relationship between that sense of community and student persistence. Utilizing a mixed methods research approach from 141 student surveys at a higher education institution in the mid-Atlantic, results indicate a positive correlation between usage of campus recreation facilities and psychological sense of community in campus recreation student users. Results of this study do not support the notion that a higher psychological sense of community is related to student achievement or student persistence. However, additional research is necessary to further solidify these explore these relationships. The current study supports campus recreation as a critical aspect of the campus environment and a place where students reap a variety of benefits (e.g., physically, mentally, and socially).
