Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear algebra is one of the most basic foundations of a wide range of scientific domains, and most textbooks of linear algebra are written by mathematicians. However, this book is specifically intended to students and researchers of pattern information processing, analyzing signals such as images and exploring computer vision and computer graphics applications. The author himself is a researcher of this domain. Such pattern information processing deals with a large amount of data, which are represented by high-dimensional vectors and matrices. There, the role of linear algebra is not merely numerical computation of large-scale vectors and matrices. In fact, data processing is usually accompanied with "geometric interpretation." For example, we can think of one data set being "orthogonal" to another and define a "distance" between them or invoke geometric relationships such as "projecting" some data onto some space. Such geometric concepts not only help us mentally visualize abstract high-dimensional spaces in intuitive terms but also lead us to find what kind of processing is appropriate for what kind of goals. First, we take up the concept of "projection" of linear spaces and describe "spectral decomposition," "singular value decomposition," and "pseudoinverse" in terms of projection. As their applications, we discuss least-squares solutions of simultaneous linear equations and covariance matrices of probability distributions of vector random variables that are not necessarily positive definite. We also discuss fitting subspaces to point data and factorizing matrices in high dimensions in relation to motion image analysis. Finally, we introduce a computer vision application of reconstructing the 3D location of a point from three camera views to illustrate the role of linear algebra in dealing with data with noise. This book is expected to help students and researchers of pattern information processing deepen the geometric understanding of linear algebra.

Book excerpt: An Introduction to Political and Social Data Analysis (With R) provides students with an accessible overview of practical data analysis while also providing a gentle introduction to R. By starting with statistics first and using just enough R code to generate results, this text helps students focus on learning how to do data analysis while slowly gaining confidence in using R as they progress through the material. This book is structured around learning by doing. Students can follow along in each chapter by reading about statistics and their applications in R, and then running the R code on their own as they work through contemporary political science and social science examples. Author Thomas M. Holbrook patiently explains each step in in the process, avoiding overly complicated jargon and commands. Exercises at the end of chapters feature both conceptual and calculation-based questions so students can check their understanding data analysis and practice using R. At the end of the semester, students can confidently add skills in data analysis with R to their resumes.

Data science involves extracting insights and knowledge from vast amounts of data using various tools and techniques. This includes data collection, cleaning, analysis, and interpretation to uncover valuable patterns and trends. On the other hand, machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on developing algorithms and models capable of learning from data to make predictions and decisions. Machine learning algorithms can automatically improve their performance over time by learning from new data, making them crucial for tasks such as image recognition, natural language processing, and predictive analytics. Together, data science and machine learning empower businesses and researchers to leverage data-driven insights for informed decision-making and innovation across diverse domains. This book is intended for the first course in Data Science and Machine Learning and covers the required topics in sufficient depth to meet the requirements of the readers.

Edwards teaches your students to conduct political research with R, the open-source programming language and software environment for statistical computing and graphics. This workbook offers the same easy-to-use and effective style as the other software companions to the Essentials of Political Analysis, tailored for R. With this comprehensive workbook, students analyze research-quality data to learn descriptive statistics, data transformations, bivariate analysis (such as cross-tabulations and mean comparisons), controlled comparisons, correlation and bivariate regression, interaction effects, and logistic regression. The clear explanations and instructions are aided by the use of many annotated and labeled screen shots, as well as QR codes linking to demonstration videos. The many end-of-chapter exercises allow students to apply their new skills. The Third Edition includes new and revised exercises, along with new and updated datasets from the 2020 American National Election Study, an experiment dataset, and two aggregate datasets, one on 50 U.S. states and one based on countries of the world. A new structure helps break up individual elements of political analysis for deeper explanation while an updated suite of R functions makes using R even easier. Students will gain valuable skills learning to analyze political data in R.

This book was released on 2010-11-11 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistics and hypothesis testing are routinely used in areas (such as linguistics) that are traditionally not mathematically intensive. In such fields, when faced with experimental data, many students and researchers tend to rely on commercial packages to carry out statistical data analysis, often without understanding the logic of the statistical tests they rely on. As a consequence, results are often misinterpreted, and users have difficulty in flexibly applying techniques relevant to their own research — they use whatever they happen to have learned. A simple solution is to teach the fundamental ideas of statistical hypothesis testing without using too much mathematics. This book provides a non-mathematical, simulation-based introduction to basic statistical concepts and encourages readers to try out the simulations themselves using the source code and data provided (the freely available programming language R is used throughout). Since the code presented in the text almost always requires the use of previously introduced programming constructs, diligent students also acquire basic programming abilities in R. The book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in any discipline, although the focus is on linguistics, psychology, and cognitive science. It is designed for self-instruction, but it can also be used as a textbook for a first course on statistics. Earlier versions of the book have been used in undergraduate and graduate courses in Europe and the US. ”Vasishth and Broe have written an attractive introduction to the foundations of statistics. It is concise, surprisingly comprehensive, self-contained and yet quite accessible. Highly recommended.” Harald Baayen, Professor of Linguistics, University of Alberta, Canada ”By using the text students not only learn to do the specific things outlined in the book, they also gain a skill set that empowers them to explore new areas that lie beyond the book’s coverage.” Colin Phillips, Professor of Linguistics, University of Maryland, USA
