Book excerpt: The nexus of social factors, the college experience, and campus safety research represents an empirical gap in the literature surrounding campus safety issues. There is a need for new and creative outlooks on how to approach this culturally sensitive and complex issue(s); a need this research will begin to fulfill. This study intends to ascertain themes regarding the socially constructed reality of campus safety perceptions and concerns, of both male and female students, at a mid-sized Virginia university. A mixed methods procedure was used which included a focus group interview as well as a survey. As Kelly and Torres (2006) wrote, "The perception, just as much as the actual experience was what shaped women students fear for their campus safety" (p. 28), thus it will be the perceptions of the students that will shape their concerns of campus safety. This study will utilize unmatched count technique as the quantitative data collection method and a social constructivist framework to adapt to the sensitive and personal nature of campus safety issues, including sexual assault and interpersonal violence. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data allowed the researcher to determine that students' perceptions could be categorized and defined in a number of ways. There is a clear need for further research on the subject in order to implement culturally appropriate and effective prevention, response and risk reduction strategies.

Book excerpt: Utilizing a mixed methods design, this research examines the ways in which students' perceptions of safety and danger on the college campus vary and do not vary according to gender through the inclusion of three key components. The first focuses on individual perceptions of safety on campus, along with the ways in which students and other members of the campus community police their behaviors within the university setting to ensure that their personal space is not violated as they navigate to and from classes and campus events. This section relies on data from interviews and focus groups with 24 Mason students and staff, along with data from the observations of two open meetings of the Presidential Task Force during April 2011 which centered on issues regarding campus safety. The second component of this study examines the institutional presentation of safety issues and risks to the university community. This section includes a content analysis of five crime and safety documents released during the 2011-2012 academic year to the campus community from the University Police and administration. The final component consists of a nation-wide assessment of safety on college campuses, relying on the crime and security data from two nationally representative datasets including the Bureau of Justice Statistics' 2004-2005 Survey of Campus Law Enforcement Agencies and the U.S. Department of Education's 2006-2007 Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool. This study builds on previous research on this topic by investigating the gendered (and not gendered) dimensions of fear, in addition to how such fears may operate to restrict women's participation on the university campus and beyond. Further, this research seeks to inform discussions at colleges and universities about how to make students feel safer as they pursue higher education.

Less effort has been spent on determining university and college students' perceptions of campus police departments. The purpose of this thesis was to fill this gap in the literature with an added emphasis on exploring potential differences in perceptions between students involved in Greek Life organizations and students not involved in Greek Life organizations. Prior literature found that Greek Life students engage in risk-taking behaviors at higher rates than their counterparts, so it was hypothesized that Greek Life students would have higher levels of distrust in the campus police due to their increased engagement in risk-taking behaviors. The survey questionnaire measuring trust and procedural justice/legitimacy perceptions of campus police was distributed through convenience sampling to university students. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analyses, and multivariate analyses were utilized to analyze the data. The results showed that students overall had positive perceptions of campus police, that Greek Life students had more negative perceptions of the campus police than non-Greek Life students, and that students with prior interactions with the campus police were more likely to perceive the police to be less procedurally just/legitimate. Race/ethnicity was not found to be a predictor in perceptions of trust or procedural justice/legitimacy of the campus police. Limitations, policy implications, and suggestions for future research concerning student perceptions of campus police were also discussed.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research lies within a community's effects upon, reactions to, and perceptions towards safety in their inhabited landscapes during various periods of the day. Through cognitive and spatial research, we can construct bridges between individuals' perceptions and reality. This study pertained to a student population sample and their views of public safety on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Questions were asked as to why they felt unsafe, and where they felt the most unsafe (or safe). The student perceptions were compared to reported crimes on the University of Arkansas campus to ascertain gaps in perception and behavior. Factors were identified that contributed to the various respondents' perceptions of safety, and both supported prior work and unexpected findings. Previous studies indicated that females generally reported having more significant fears than their male counterparts, at night, or at any other time (Reid and Konrad, 2004); some researchers have attributed this to over-socialization that women are targets while men are not (Jiang et al, 2017). This research revealed these differences. The findings indicated that there were significant gaps within segments of the student population in their perception of safety on the university campus. Overall, it was found that the respondents had a significant understanding of the dangers and risks that are present on the campus. Also, it was found that widespread media-reported incidents (traffic-related student death) dramatically skewed perceived zones of danger on campus. The use of mass media, social media, and campus outreach may have a greater impact on students' perception of risk than first believed and may represent the most reliable path to decreasing perception gaps. Book excerpt: Police-community relations are a frequently discussed topic in both academe and the media. Many factors are believed to influence individuals' perceptions and views of law enforcement, including demographic variables (race and socioeconomic status), experiences with law enforcement, and media consumption. With an emphasis in the news and on social media regarding police misconduct or police brutality, this research seeks to inquire about college students' perceptions of law enforcement and racial injustice within the criminal justice system. While controlling for key demographic variables, this project specifically examines how individuals' personal experiences with law enforcement and their exposure to news media and social media impact their perceptions and attitudes of police or racial injustice in the criminal justice system. Other variables, such as ideological views, obligation to authority, and delinquent behaviors were also analyzed to provide more specific insight into what factors influence student perceptions. Using ordinal logistic regression, researchers analyzed student perceptions of racial injustice in the criminal justice system and police legitimacy. Findings for this study indicate that variables other than standard demographics, contact with law enforcement, and media consumption had a significant impact on student perceptions of police.
