Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous studies have been conducted to determine predictors of perceptions and attitudes toward police. Less effort has been spent on determining university and college students' perceptions of campus police departments. The purpose of this thesis was to fill this gap in the literature with an added emphasis on exploring potential differences in perceptions between students involved in Greek Life organizations and students not involved in Greek Life organizations. Prior literature found that Greek Life students engage in risk-taking behaviors at higher rates than their counterparts, so it was hypothesized that Greek Life students would have higher levels of distrust in the campus police due to their increased engagement in risk-taking behaviors. The survey questionnaire measuring trust and procedural justice/legitimacy perceptions of campus police was distributed through convenience sampling to university students. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analyses, and multivariate analyses were utilized to analyze the data. The results showed that students overall had positive perceptions of campus police, that Greek Life students had more negative perceptions of the campus police than non-Greek Life students, and that students with prior interactions with the campus police were more likely to perceive the police to be less procedurally just/legitimate. Race/ethnicity was not found to be a predictor in perceptions of trust or procedural justice/legitimacy of the campus police. Limitations, policy implications, and suggestions for future research concerning student perceptions of campus police were also discussed.

Book excerpt: This thesis explores how three primary variables (Race of the Police Officer, Race of the Suspect, and Level of Suspect Resistance) in vignette experiments affects college students' perceptions of legitimacy in police use of force incidents. The study is a 2 x 2 x 3 subject experiment design as there are two levels for Race of the Police Officer (Black and White), two levels for Race of the Suspect (Black and White) and three levels for Suspect Resistance (Unarmed, Knife and Gun). The dependent variable is the college students' perception of legitimacy measured through questions of justification about the police officer's use of force. The participants in this study were 373 undergraduate students from four introductory-level criminology classes at The Pennsylvania State University. The findings demonstrate that suspect resistance is significant in predicting perceptions of legitimacy in police use of force incidents while suspect and officer race are not significant. Respondents that are males, from rural hometowns, multiracial, and have positive attitudes of police were more likely to perceive officer use of force as legitimate in all vignette scenarios. The implications of these findings for police-community relations and police use of force policies are discussed.

Book excerpt: Police-community relations are a frequently discussed topic in both academe and the media. Many factors are believed to influence individuals' perceptions and views of law enforcement, including demographic variables (race and socioeconomic status), experiences with law enforcement, and media consumption. With an emphasis in the news and on social media regarding police misconduct or police brutality, this research seeks to inquire about college students' perceptions of law enforcement and racial injustice within the criminal justice system. While controlling for key demographic variables, this project specifically examines how individuals' personal experiences with law enforcement and their exposure to news media and social media impact their perceptions and attitudes of police or racial injustice in the criminal justice system. Other variables, such as ideological views, obligation to authority, and delinquent behaviors were also analyzed to provide more specific insight into what factors influence student perceptions. Using ordinal logistic regression, researchers analyzed student perceptions of racial injustice in the criminal justice system and police legitimacy. Findings for this study indicate that variables other than standard demographics, contact with law enforcement, and media consumption had a significant impact on student perceptions of police.
