Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the effect of psychological, social and demographic variables on student achievement and summarizes the current research findings in the field. It addresses the need for inclusive and interpretive studies in the field in order to interpret student achievement literature and suggests new pathways for further studies. Appropriately, a meta-analysis approach is used by the contributors to show the big picture to the researchers by analyzing and combining the findings from different independent studies. In particular, the authors compile various studies examining the relationship between student achievement and 21 psychological, social and demographic variables separately. The philosophy behind this book is to direct future research and practices rather than addressing the limits of current studies.

This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.
Book Synopsis The Effects of School-based Extracurricular Activities on Adolescent Self-esteem by : Rebecca S. McInnis
Download or read book The Effects of School-based Extracurricular Activities on Adolescent Self-esteem written by Rebecca S. McInnis and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participation in extracurricular activities has the potential to significantly impact an adolescent's opinion about themselves; specifically to view themselves in a more positive light. Meeting new friends, developing interests, learning the importance of time- management while working together toward a common goal are all outcomes adolescents benefit from while participating in a school-based extracurricular activities. High self-esteem in adolescents is associated with the ability to resist peer-pressure, to develop stronger self-regulation tactics, and to generate enjoyment in day-to-day activities. Adolescents who are involved in extracurricular activities demonstrate positive adjustments with transitions and satisfactory academic achievement. It is a fine line between participation and over-participation in activities as too many activities may result in students feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Finding balance between school, work and extracurricular activities contributes to the overall well-being of the student.

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Student Engagement written by Sandra L. Christenson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-23 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than two decades, the concept of student engagement has grown from simple attention in class to a construct comprised of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components that embody and further develop motivation for learning. Similarly, the goals of student engagement have evolved from dropout prevention to improved outcomes for lifelong learning. This robust expansion has led to numerous lines of research across disciplines and are brought together clearly and comprehensively in the Handbook of Research on Student Engagement. The Handbook guides readers through the field’s rich history, sorts out its component constructs, and identifies knowledge gaps to be filled by future research. Grounding data in real-world learning situations, contributors analyze indicators and facilitators of student engagement, link engagement to motivation, and gauge the impact of family, peers, and teachers on engagement in elementary and secondary grades. Findings on the effectiveness of classroom interventions are discussed in detail. And because assessing engagement is still a relatively new endeavor, chapters on measurement methods and issues round out this important resource. Topical areas addressed in the Handbook include: Engagement across developmental stages. Self-efficacy in the engaged learner. Parental and social influences on engagement and achievement motivation. The engaging nature of teaching for competency development. The relationship between engagement and high-risk behavior in adolescents. Comparing methods for measuring student engagement. An essential guide to the expanding knowledge base, the Handbook of Research on Student Engagement serves as a valuable resource for researchers, scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in such varied fields as clinical child and school psychology, educational psychology, public health, teaching and teacher education, social work, and educational policy.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students participating in extracurricular activities may benefit in many ways that may include better grades, improved test scores, and better social emotional well-being. These students are also less likely to drop out of school and less likely to participate in risky activities such as experimenting with drugs or alcohol. Student athletes and participants in extracurricular activities are also more likely to regularly attend school and have good investment and ownership in their education. When students are engaged in after school activities, they are more likely to make friendships and connections with other peers and staff members. These extracurricular activities often correlate with high academic achievement, development of healthy relationships, and management of time and resources. Students who are involved and connected with school are more likely to have a better self-concept and self-esteem.
Book Synopsis Kentyckian Middle School Students' Self-efficacy and Their Participation in Physical Sports by : Alissa Jo Richards
Download or read book Kentyckian Middle School Students' Self-efficacy and Their Participation in Physical Sports written by Alissa Jo Richards and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-efficacy is well known as one of the most effective methods to raise student academic achievement (Hattie, 2007). Known as the “I think I can” phenomenon, extensive research is presented concerning the impact of self-efficacy as the predictor to achievement. Likewise, participation in physical sports is known for its impact on academic achievement, as well as social and emotional health. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine the presence of a statistically significant relationship between the level of participation in physical sports activities and the middle school students’ self-efficacy. A convenience sample of 69 seventh and eighth grade students from three middle schools in Kentucky participated in the study through an email survey containing both survey instruments. The four null hypotheses were tested through Pearson correlations to describe the direction and strength of the relationship between the self-reported participation in sports using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children, and self-reported levels of self-efficacy, as measured with Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Children. The research supported the importance of students being given a variety of opportunities to participate in physical sports activities as a method to build academic, social, and emotional efficacy. Additional research would be useful exploring how the predictive value of participation in physical sports is affected by ethnicity and socio-economic status.

Download or read book Participation in Extracurricular Activities in Relation to Student Self-esteem Levels written by Heather Schmit and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participation in school-based extracurricular activities in relation to self-esteem was examined. The study assessed the relationship between participation in school-based extracurricular activities and self-esteem through surveying high school students, grades nine through twelve, living within midwestern Wisconsin. The survey was administered during the spring semester of the 2006-2007 school year. In previous research, participation in school-based extracurricular activities has been associated with many various positive effects on school aged individuals (Steitz & Owen, 1992). One of those positive effects is self-esteem. This study addresses three research questions; What is the relationship between student participation in extracurricular activities and student self-esteem among high school students? What is the relationship between gender and self-esteem levels among students who participate in extracurricular activities? And is anyone type of extracurricular activity more strongly related to student self-esteem than the others? The current research study has shown that male students who participated in school-based extracurricular activities have a significantly higher level of self-esteem than those males who did not participate in school-based extracurricular activities. The study also determined that males had a significantly higher level of self-esteem than females, whether or not they choose to participate in school-based extracurricular activities. Recommendations for future studies as well as educators were also addressed.
