Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational Citizenship Behavior: Its Nature, Antecedents, and Consequences examines the vast amount of work that has been done on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) in recent years as it has increasingly evoked interest among researchers in organizational psychology. No doubt some of this interest can be attributed to the long-held intuitive sense that job satisfaction matters. Authors Dennis W. Organ, Philip M. Podsakoff, and Scott B. MacKenzie offer conceptual insight as they build upon the various works that have been done on the subject and seek to update the record about OCB. Key Features: Explores how OCB translates into objective measures of efficiency, profitability, customer satisfaction, and other criteria of organizational functioning Examines how important OCB is in other societal cultures and correlates findings from North American studies Addresses the relative importance of individual personality as a factor in determining OCB OCB has become a foundation for concepts in Organizational Studies. This book provides an all-encompassing resource for students, scholars, and practitioners looking for a comprehensive understanding on this key topic. It is an excellent textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying organizational behavior or organizational psychology in courses such as Strategic Human Resource Management, Measurement of Work Performance; Behavioral Organization Theory; and Social Psychology of Organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's industrialized societies, the majority of parents work full time while caring for and raising their children and managing household upkeep, trying to keep a precarious balance of fulfilling multiple roles as parent, worker, friend, & child. Increasingly demands of the workplace such as early or late hours, travel, commute, relocation, etc. conflict with the needs of being a parent. At the same time, it is through work that people increasingly define their identity and self-worth, and which provides the opportunity for personal growth, interaction with friends and colleagues, and which provides the income and benefits on which the family subsists. The interface between work and family is an area of increasing research, in terms of understanding stress, job burn out, self-esteem, gender roles, parenting behaviors, and how each facet affects the others. The research in this area has been widely scattered in journals in psychology, family studies, business, sociology, health, and economics, and presented in diverse conferences (e.g., APA, SIOP, Academy of Management). It is difficult for experts in the field to keep up with everything they need to know, with the information dispersed. This Handbook will fill this gap by synthesizing theory, research, policy, and workplace practice/organizational policy issues in one place. The book will be useful as a reference for researchers in the area, as a guide to practitioners and policy makers, and as a resource for teaching in both undergraduate and graduate courses.

Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Organizational Citizenship Behavior provides a broad and interdisciplinary review of state-of-the-art research on organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs), and related constructs such as contextual performance, spontaneous organizational behavior, prosocial behavior, and proactive behavior in the workplace. Contributors address the conceptualization and measurement of OCBs; the antecedents, correlates, and consequences of these behaviors; and the methodological issues that are common when studying OCBs. In addition, this handbook pushes future scholarship in this and related areas by identifying substantive questions, methods, and issues for future research. The result is a single resource that will inform and inspire scholars, students, and practitioners of the origins of this construct, the current state of research on this topic, and potentially exciting avenues for future exploration. This handbook is designed to meet the needs of a broad spectrum of researchers and advanced undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of disciplines including management, organizational behavior, human resources management, and industrial and organizational psychology, as well as those interested in studying citizenship behavior in a variety of organizational contexts including marketing, nursing, engineering, sports, and education.

Book excerpt: This investigation was a study focused on identifying factors present at a middle school with high levels of organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). Organ in 1988 was the first used to describe behaviors or actions that are not prescribed but occurred freely to help others with the task at hand. This study utilized a mixed methods research design called a sequential explanatory design in order to determine the factors present in a single case school with high the levels of OCB. The OCB Level of all three middle schools in one district was measured using the OCB School Scale which was used in the selection of the case study school. The researcher administered the Individual OCB Scale at the case school in order to determine which teachers would be interviewed. Fourteen teachers and the principal were interviewed to determine factors that they identified as helping to promote OCB. The researcher discovered that teachers who exhibited above and beyond behaviors believed that this was normal school behavior. Teachers who exhibited OCB felt that (a) their teaching became better, (b) they made a difference in their students' lives, and (c) they were more enthusiastic and satisfied with their job. Teachers exhibited higher OCB because (a) they wanted their students to achieve more, (b) it contributed to their students' well being, and (c) it increased their students' love for the subject matter and learning. Teachers exhibited higher OCB to (a) make their school a better place, (b) improve the overall school climate, (c) create a more positive school environment and (d) increase student achievement. Subsequent research could focus on how Individual OCB is affected by teachers' unions, socio-economics, age, number of years teaching, marital status, and the number of children they might have.

A total of 55 schools were surveyed, and 1,665 certified school personnel participated in the study. The instruments used in this study were the Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) scale and a subset of the Organizational Climate Index (OCI) called achievement press. It was hypothesized that all three variables are related and achievement press is a better predictor of student achievement than organizational citizenship. To test this hypothesis, elementary school teachers completed surveys that measured achievement press and organizational citizenship. Student achievement was defined as a student's performance on the Alabama Reading and Mathematics Test. Reliabilities for the OCB and the OCI ranged from .80 to .89, indicating acceptable levels of reliability. As predicted in the first hypothesis, achievement press and organizational citizenship are positively related. However, neither variable was related to student achievement. Socioeconomic status was related to reading achievement, math achievement, and achievement press. Hypothesis 2 predicted achievement press would be a better predictor of student achievement than organizational citizenship. This study did not validate the prediction of Hypothesis 2.

Book excerpt: Building on 20 years of careful research and real-world testing, the authors show administrators how to assess their schools' health. The goal is to improve middle schools by making sure the "culture" is right for all groups - students, teachers, staff. The authors call their measurement tools the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire Revised for Middle Schools (OCDQ-RM), for tapping the openness of a school's professional interactions, and the Organizational Health Inventory for Middle Schools (OHI-M), for capturing the health of interpersonal relationships in schools. The OCDQ-RM (openness) questionnaire and the OHI-M (health) inventory are included in this book - ready to copy and administer. These measurements are user-friendly and easy to interpret; scoring directions are clearly explained. School leaders, especially superintendents and principals, can use these hands-on tools to understand what's going on in their schools and then make changes as necessary. Actual case studies show how using the questionnaires can help make every middle school a high-quality and positive learning environment.

Book excerpt: Prominent scholars in this book move boldly beyond critique to show how and why the critical functions of a democratically informed civic education (not merely professional training) must become the core of the university's mission. They show why higher education must address what it means to relate knowledge to public life, and social responsibility to the demands of critical citizenship. Moreover, they show why democratic forms of education and various elements of a critical pedagogy are vital not only to individual students, but also to our economy and our democratic institutions and future leadership. Book excerpt: Research suggests that teachers who exhibit organizational citizenship behaviors positively affect student achievement. Additionally, leaders can influence school climate by establishing perceptions of justice and a school structure that is enabling. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between organizational citizenship behaviors, organizational justice, and enabling structures in schools. Data were collected at the school level using reliable and valid surveys that individually measure citizenship behavior, perceptions of justice, and the extent that school structure is enabling. The Organizational Citizenship Behavior Scale (OCB), Organizational Justice Scale (OJS), and the Enabling School Structure Form (ESS) were utilized to survey licensed teachers for their responses. Data were analyzed from 781 teachers in 58 public elementary schools and 50 public secondary schools in Alabama. Correlational analyses were conducted to determine the relationships among the variables. Findings indicated that organizational citizenship did not have a significant relationship with organizational justice or enabling school structures. However, a significant positive correlation was found between organizational justice and enabling school structures. Additionally, a regression analysis indicated neither organizational justice nor an enabling school structure predicted organizational citizenship behaviors among teachers. SES was not correlated with, or a predictor of, any other variable. This study, by examining the relationships among these variables, provided new insight into the theoretical knowledge of organizational dynamics, and practically as a guide to school administrators.
