Book Synopsis Suspending Chicago's Students by : Lauren Sartain
Download or read book Suspending Chicago's Students written by Lauren Sartain and published by Consortium on Chicago School Research. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students' risk of suspension is more strongly determined by which school they attend than by their backgrounds-including their race, gender or income. A subset of Chicago schools-about a quarter of high schools and 10 percent of schools with middle grades-have very high suspension rates, and almost all of these schools predominantly serve African American students. These schools' students come from the poorest neighborhoods with the lowest incoming achievement; many have been victims of abuse or neglect. At high-suspending high schools, about half of students received a suspension in the 2013-14 school year. This report examines reasons for racial and gender disparities in suspension rates and finds that suspensions are concentrated among schools serving the most vulnerable student populations. It also explores the degree to which differences in schools' suspension rates are related to school climate and student achievement.

Book Synopsis Student Discipline Strategies by : Oliver Clinton Moles
Download or read book Student Discipline Strategies written by Oliver Clinton Moles and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost a third of public school teachers have considered leaving teaching because of student misbehavior. When asked what were the greatest problems facing their local schools, respondents to Gallup polls have cited discipline first almost every year back to the early 1970s. Discipline problems may range from crimes in schools, such as robbery and drug dealing committed by students or intruders, to lack of respectful behavior toward teachers and classmates, and the spectrum from crimes to disrespect is discussed in the chapters of this ground-breaking volume. This collection by leading scholars should be useful to social scientists, educational researchers, educators, and school administrators--all those who need to understand how specific and manipulable features of schools, classrooms, and their surrounding environments affect the course of student behavior and prospects for sustained improvement in the discipline climate in schools. The information in these chapters provides many practical ideas, as well as some cautions, for trying new approaches to make schools more orderly learning environments for all students.

Download or read book Student Engagement written by Amy L. Reschly and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides cutting-edge, evidence-based strategies and interventions that target students’ engagement at school and with learning. Coverage begins with the background and 29-year history of the Check & Connect Model and describes the model and assessment of student engagement that served as the backdrop for conceptualizing the engagement interventions described in the book. Subsequent chapters are organized around the subtypes of student engagement – academic, behavioral, affective, cognitive – that were developed based on work with the Check & Connect Model. Principles and formal interventions are presented at both the universal and more intensive levels, consistent with the Response-to-Intervention/Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework. The book concludes with a summary on the lessons learned from Check & Connect and the importance of a system that is oriented toward enhancing engagement and school completion for all students. Interventions featured in this book include: Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS). The Homework, Organization, and Planning Skills (HOPS) Intervention. The Good Behavior Game in the classroom. Check-in, Check-out (CICO). Banking Time, a dyadic intervention to improve teacher-student relationships The Self-Regulation Empowerment Program (SREP). Student Engagement is a must-have resource for researchers, professionals, and graduate students in child and school psychology, educational policy and politics, and family studies.
