Book excerpt: We are delighted to introduce the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Progressive Education (ICOPE) 2020 hosted by the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Lampung, Indonesia, in the heart of the city Bandar Lampung on 16 and 17 October 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we took a model of an online organised event via Zoom. The theme of the 2nd ICOPE 2020 was “Exploring the New Era of Education”, with various related topics including Science Education, Technology and Learning Innovation, Social and Humanities Education, Education Management, Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, Teacher Professional Development, Curriculum and Instructions, Assessment and Evaluation, and Environmental Education. This conference has invited academics, researchers, teachers, practitioners, and students worldwide to participate and exchange ideas, experiences, and research findings in the field of education to make a better, more efficient, and impactful teaching and learning. This conference was attended by 190 participants and 160 presenters. Four keynote papers were delivered at the conference; the first two papers were delivered by Prof Emeritus Stephen D. Krashen from the University of Southern California, the USA and Prof Dr Bujang Rahman, M.Si. from Universitas Lampung, Indonesia. The second two papers were presented by Prof Dr Habil Andrea Bencsik from the University of Pannonia, Hungary and Dr Hisham bin Dzakiria from Universiti Utara Malaysia, Malaysia. In addition, a total of 160 papers were also presented by registered presenters in the parallel sessions of the conference. The conference represents the efforts of many individuals. Coordination with the steering chairs was essential for the success of the conference. We sincerely appreciate their constant support and guidance. We would also like to express our gratitude to the organising committee members for putting much effort into ensuring the success of the day-to-day operation of the conference and the reviewers for their hard work in reviewing submissions. We also thank the four invited keynote speakers for sharing their insights. Finally, the conference would not be possible without the excellent papers contributed by authors. We thank all authors for their contributions and participation in the 2nd ICOPE 2020. We strongly believe that the 2nd ICOPE 2020 has provided a good forum for academics, researchers, teachers, practitioners, and students to address all aspects of education-related issues in the current educational situation. We feel honoured to serve the best recent scientific knowledge and development in education and hope that these proceedings will furnish scholars from all over the world with an excellent reference book. Over the past twenty years, amateur fanfiction writers have published an astonishing amount of fiction in online repositories. More than 1.5 million enthusiastic fanfiction writers—primarily young people in their teens and twenties—have contributed nearly seven million stories and more than 176 million reviews to a single online site, Fanfiction.net. In this book, Cecilia Aragon and Katie Davis provide an in-depth examination of fanfiction writers and fanfiction repositories, finding that these sites are not shallow agglomerations and regurgitations of pop culture but rather online spaces for sophisticated and informal learning. Through their participation in online fanfiction communities, young people find ways to support and learn from one another. Aragon and Davis term this novel system of interactive advice and instruction distributed mentoring, and describe its seven attributes, each of which is supported by an aspect of networked technologies: aggregation, accretion, acceleration, abundance, availability, asynchronicity, and affect. Employing an innovative combination of qualitative and quantitative analyses, they provide an in-depth ethnography, reporting on a nine-month study of three fanfiction sites, and offer a quantitative analysis of lexical diversity in the 61.5 billion words on the Fanfiction.net site. Going beyond fandom, Aragon and Davis consider how distributed mentoring could improve not only other online learning platforms but also formal writing instruction in schools.

The digital revolution has created new avenues for language use and new communication modalities. The existence of technology mediates our linguistic and social interactions. The pervasive influence of technology on human development has the potential to influence language acquisition and change social behavior. In this global era, many challenges in human life arise. Our brave new digital world has caused some discord for language activists – and if harsh text speakers do not feel good, woe ensues our new diet of round-shaped emojis. Our language and our relationship to language have developed to keep pace with cultural changes. Furthermore, since the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, society has been carrying out communication online through the internet and social. To , society has been accustomed to doing it that way. One of the challenges linguistics studies are facing is the implementation of appropriate language capacity. There are conditions for the use of inaccurate languages according to standardized rules in communication through online media. To solve this, reciprocal interactions are also important for creating a pool of different perspectives among the smart human community. In total, digital technologies are also changing the ways we learn and teach, as well as the ways we compose and research. These changes are occurring throughout the academy, including the humanities — a set of disciplines less associated with technology. In an effort to vanquish the challenges trending in the linguistic study in order to depict the future perspectives on it established in the description above, fresh ideas from the younger generations are needed. For that purpose, the Graduate School of Linguistics, the Postgraduate Program University of Warmadewa in collaboration with other institutes presents an international academic discussion forum in the form of a conference. This event is themed “The 2nd Student Conference on Linguistics: Trends and Future Perspectives in Language study and Language Teaching”. Through the forum students from various parts of the world are expected to share bright and innovative ideas to discover solutions to the problems and challenges faced by linguistics today and in the coming future.

The proceeding consisted of 34 accepted papers from the total of 82 submission papers. The proceeding consisted of 10 main areas of education and religion. They are: Modernizing madrasas in global contexts, Teacher and Education development, Student abilities in religion education, Education and Technology, World Class University in Indonesian religious university, Local wisdom and religion education, Citizenship in religion education, Religion and character education, Moderism in religion and education, and Islamic boarding school stretching. All papers have been scrutinized by a panel of reviewers who provide critical comments and corrections, and thereafter contributed to the improvement of the quality of the papers. We strongly believe that INCRE 2020 conference has become a good forum for all researcher, developers, practitioners, scholars, policy makers, especially post graduate students to discuss their understandings of current processes and findings, as well as to look at possibilities for setting-up new trends in Education and Religion. We also expect that the future INCRE conference will be as successful and stimulating, as indicated by the contributions presented in this volume.
