Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Struggle The author has not attempted to conform to the plot of the conventional novelist, but to tell the story of the real burden under which the American people are staggering. The writer has made the forms of the conven tional novelist give away to the real purpose of this work. No work has any claim upon the public unless there is a purpose in sending it forth. The intention of the writer has been to disclose the real disease in Organized Society of the American Republic in this the twentieth century. The life of Grace Shelton as told in this story is a reality in thousands of the homes in this land. If the work arrests the attention of the public to the real condi tions as told in this story, the author will feel amply compensated for his efiorts. If he be infinitely just, it would be better for him not to harbour likes or dislikes what soever. For after he has heard the evidence, there can be no doubt as to his judgment. Every human being-has an instinctive sentiment destined to play the role of such a judge. Even children and the intellectually lowest races, although not competent to practise justice recognize it. Justice meted out by the father elevates him in the eyes of his chil dren to a king whom they love and adore. Every unjust action by him produces fear in them and lowers their respect. "I suppose he's over at the tavern as usual," said the woman despondently. "He drinks up about all he earns, and there's little enough left for us. I hope you won't follow in his steps, Robert." "You may be sure I won't, Aunt Jane," said the boy, nodding emphatically. "I wouldn't drink a glass of rum for a hundred dollars." "God keep you in that resolution, my dear boy! I don't want my sister's son to go to destruction as my husband is doing." My story opens in a small fishing village on the coast of one of the New England States. Robert Coverdale, whom I have briefly introduced, is the young hero whose fortunes I propose to record. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Harper and Anthony Walton present the definitive collection of black verse in the United States--200 years of vision, struggle, power, beauty, and triumph from 52 outstanding poets. From the neoclassical stylings of slave-born Phillis Wheatley to the wistful lyricism of Paul Lawrence Dunbar . . . the rigorous wisdom of Gwendolyn Brooks...the chiseled modernism of Robert Hayden...the extraordinary prosody of Sterling A. Brown...the breathtaking, expansive narratives of Rita Dove...the plaintive rhapsodies of an imprisoned Elderidge Knight . . . The postmodern artistry of Yusef Komunyaka. Here, too, is a landmark exploration of lesser-known artists whose efforts birthed the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts movements--and changed forever our national literature and the course of America itself. Meticulously researched, thoughtfully structured, The Vintage Book of African-American Poetry is a collection of inestimable value to students, educators, and all those interested in the ever-evolving tradition that is American poetry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Struggle If the Great War, which has descended upon us like a visitation from another world, is not really native to our true nature as human beings, why does it have such a hold upon us? Whence does it derive its power to stretch forth its gruesome hand and drag us, open-eyed, protesting, horror-stricken, into its dread vortex? Why are we finally fascinated by it and go exulting into the fray? To accuse the world of inconsistency and hypocrisy provides us with no explanation. Beneath every cover of duplicity is concealed some earnestness of purpose. What is it? What is the blundering purpose of the world? That struggle is Often horrible in its details. I have not dwelt on those horrors more forcibly than I considered necessary to awaken philanthropic action in the endeavour to ameliorate and remove them. The reception generally accorded to the first edition proves that the difficulties of the attempt have been justly appreciated by the reviewers. There is much that is cheering, on the other hand, in the strenuous endeavours which civilization is everywhere making to remove the abuses of the past, and to alleviate the sufferings of the present.
