Book excerpt: In the period of transformation significant changes in the structure of income sources of population in Poland have been observed. The most important ones are a fall in the share of salaries and an increased role of social transfers as a main source of incomes. These tendencies were especially visible in rural areas. Accession of Poland to the European Union creates through Common Agricultural Policy and regional policy new possibilities for overcoming income problems troubling rural population. Total transfers to Polish agricultural sector and rural areas within 2004-2006 under those titles would reach mare than 1O billion €. To ensure maximum absorption of available funds, national development plans were elaborated. Authors argue that during the first years of membership there will be no significant changes in the rural population's income structure.

Book Synopsis Economic and Social Changes in Rural Areas in Poland by : Agnieszka Wrzochalska
Download or read book Economic and Social Changes in Rural Areas in Poland written by Agnieszka Wrzochalska and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poland's accession to the European Union has had a significant effect on the socio-economic situation of rural dwellers. The quality of life in rural areas is worse than in the cities, which is primarily due to lower income of rural residents. Also, the level of expenditure is lower, mainly with respect to higher needs. The equipment of households with basic technical installations and durable goods, especially modern, is also worse in rural areas than in the urban areas. The rural population evaluates subjectively their quality of life as worse than the urban population and they also believe that the ability to satisfy their needs is worse than in the cities. Rural development policy should continue pursuing actions contributing to the development of entrepreneurship, renewal and development of villages, in order to ensure sustainable development of rural areas, also with regard to technical infrastructure, which contributes to improvement in the living conditions and the conditions of business operations of the inhabitants of rural areas. This will contribute to bridging a gap of economic and social disparities between urban and rural population.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Last three years brought significant changes in the Polish economy. Poland's accession to the European Union in May 2004 has strongly affected all sectors of the economy. Those changes were expected before EU enlargement, but not precisely assessed. Before Poland joined EU, many estimations and analysis of the implications of the EU enlargement for new-comers were made. For example, on the basis of traditional as well as new theories of international trade E. Czarny and G. Lang (2001) concluded that human capital and capital intensive industries suffer after first of May 2004, concurrently income distribution in Poland significantly changes after all. From the present point of view, and three year experience of EU membership, there is a proper stage for evaluation of the short-run effects of the Poland's EU accession. Recent changes in Polish economy are assessed in terms of the labor market, international trade, and labor productivity. Comparing the previous findings, based mostly on the theories of trade, to the statistics of changes of the Polish economy in 2005 and 2006, we pointed out some conclusions concerning how expectations, assumptions and theoretical simulations are able to foreseen real economies of integration.
Book Synopsis Returns from Income Strategies in Rural Poland by : Jan Falkowski
Download or read book Returns from Income Strategies in Rural Poland written by Jan Falkowski and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to stabilize and improve their income situation, rural households are strongly encouraged to diversify their activities both in and outside the agricultural sector. Often, however, this phenomenon takes on only moderate proportions. This article addresses issues of rural households' income diversification in the case of Poland. It investigates returns from rural households' income strategies using propensity score matching methods and extensive datasets spanning 1998-2008. Results suggest that returns from combining farm and off-farm activities were lower than returns from concentrating on farming or on self-employment outside agriculture. This differential is stable over time although returns from diversification have relatively improved after the accession of Poland to the European Union. This is also visible in the fact that since 2006, returns from combining farm and off-farm activities have equalized with returns from relying solely on hired off-farm labour, thus smoothing away the difference observed before the accession. Further, over the analysed period, households pursuing a diversification strategy performed better than those relying solely on unearned income. Finally, in general, incomes in households combining farm and off-farm activities were higher than in those combining off-farm income sources.

Book Synopsis European Regional Policy and Development by : María del Carmen Sánchez-Carreira
Download or read book European Regional Policy and Development written by María del Carmen Sánchez-Carreira and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shortcomings of traditional regional policies led to a major policy. Thus, regions have become more active in the design and implementation of policies, following a bottom-up approach and involving the participation of the local community in strategic planning, as opposed to the traditional top-down method. This book addresses regional development theories and policies, with a special focus on forgotten places, and raises emerging questions about recent theoretical advances, as well as trends and challenges in the field. It examines two main and related issues: the crucial role of regional actors for development and the role of Forgotten Spaces. It emphasizes the spatial/territorial approaches from different theoretical perspectives, underlining place-based approaches and compares the experiences of both successful and failed cases, attempting to identify lessons and policy recommendations, as well as adding empirical evidence to this field. The different cases presented, which focus on Forgotten Spaces, allow the reader to assess the role of different actors for regional development as well as some sectoral approaches. While there is a clear focus on European countries with different geographical, institutional and sociocultural characteristics, the book also examines good and bad examples of regional development and policies related to forgotten places from different regions worldwide, including developed and developing countries. The book benefits from contributions from over 20 authors from different nationalities, and a rich diversity of case studies, approaches and methods of discussion. The authors discuss practical examples and more complex theoretical approaches, involving techniques of spatial analysis, spatial econometrics, social networks, content analysis as well as regional planning techniques. The book will appeal to an interdisciplinary audience and will provide academicians, politicians, and policy designers with original and detailed analyses.
