Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The communication complexity of a function f(x, y) measures the number of bits that two players, one who knows x and the other who knows y, must exchange to determine the value f(x, y). Communication complexity is a fundamental measure of complexity of functions. Lower bounds on this measure lead to lower bounds on many other measures of computational complexity. This monograph surveys lower bounds in the field of communication complexity. Our focus is on lower bounds that work by first representing the communication complexity measure in Euclidean space. That is to say, the first step in these lower bound techniques is to find a geometric complexity measure, such as rank or trace norm, that serves as a lower bound to the underlying communication complexity measure. Lower bounds on this geometric complexity measure are then found using algebraic and geometric tools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication complexity is the mathematical study of scenarios where several parties need to communicate to achieve a common goal, a situation that naturally appears during computation. This introduction presents the most recent developments in an accessible form, providing the language to unify several disjoint research subareas. Written as a guide for a graduate course on communication complexity, it will interest a broad audience in computer science, from advanced undergraduates to researchers in areas ranging from theory to algorithm design to distributed computing. The first part presents basic theory in a clear and illustrative way, offering beginners an entry into the field. The second part describes applications including circuit complexity, proof complexity, streaming algorithms, extension complexity of polytopes, and distributed computing. Proofs throughout the text use ideas from a wide range of mathematics, including geometry, algebra, and probability. Each chapter contains numerous examples, figures, and exercises to aid understanding.

Book excerpt: Briefly, we review the basic elements of computability theory and prob ability theory that are required. Finally, in order to place the subject in the appropriate historical and conceptual context we trace the main roots of Kolmogorov complexity. This way the stage is set for Chapters 2 and 3, where we introduce the notion of optimal effective descriptions of objects. The length of such a description (or the number of bits of information in it) is its Kolmogorov complexity. We treat all aspects of the elementary mathematical theory of Kolmogorov complexity. This body of knowledge may be called algo rithmic complexity theory. The theory of Martin-Lof tests for random ness of finite objects and infinite sequences is inextricably intertwined with the theory of Kolmogorov complexity and is completely treated. We also investigate the statistical properties of finite strings with high Kolmogorov complexity. Both of these topics are eminently useful in the applications part of the book. We also investigate the recursion theoretic properties of Kolmogorov complexity (relations with Godel's incompleteness result), and the Kolmogorov complexity version of infor mation theory, which we may call "algorithmic information theory" or "absolute information theory. " The treatment of algorithmic probability theory in Chapter 4 presup poses Sections 1. 6, 1. 11. 2, and Chapter 3 (at least Sections 3. 1 through 3. 4).

As a result, people face an increasing need to integrate information from science with their personal values and other considerations as they make important life decisions about medical care, the safety of foods, what to do about climate change, and many other issues. Communicating science effectively, however, is a complex task and an acquired skill. Moreover, the approaches to communicating science that will be most effective for specific audiences and circumstances are not obvious. Fortunately, there is an expanding science base from diverse disciplines that can support science communicators in making these determinations. Communicating Science Effectively offers a research agenda for science communicators and researchers seeking to apply this research and fill gaps in knowledge about how to communicate effectively about science, focusing in particular on issues that are contentious in the public sphere. To inform this research agenda, this publication identifies important influences â€" psychological, economic, political, social, cultural, and media-related â€" on how science related to such issues is understood, perceived, and used.

Book excerpt: The papers contained in this volume were presented at the fourth edition of the IFIP International Conference on Theoretical Computer Science (IFIP TCS), held August 23-24, 2006 in Santiago, Chile. They were selected from 44 pa pers submitted from 17 countries in response to the call for papers. A total of 16 submissions were accepted as full papers, yielding an acceptance rate of about 36%. Papers sohcited for IFIP TCS 2006 were meant to constitute orig inal contributions in two general areas: Algorithms, Complexity and Models of Computation; and Logic, Semantics, Specification and Verification. The conference also included six invited presentations: Marcelo Arenas (P- tificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Chile), Jozef Gruska (Masaryk University, Czech Republic), Claudio Gutierrez (Universidad de Chile, Chile), Marcos Kiwi (Universidad de Chile, Chile), Nicola Santoro (Carleton University, Canada), and Mihalis Yannakakis (Columbia University, USA). The abstracts of those presentations are included in this volume. In addition, Jozef Gruska and Nicola Santoro accepted our invitation to write full papers related to their talks. Those two surveys are included in the present volume as well. TCS is a biannual conference. The first edition was held in Sendai (Japan, 2000), followed by Montreal (Canada, 2002) and Toulouse (France, 2004).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information design is an emerging area in technical communication, garnering increased attention in recent times as more information is presented through both old and new media. In this volume, editors Michael J. Albers and Beth Mazur bring together scholars and practitioners to explore the issues facing those in this exciting new field. Treating information as it applies to technical communication, with a special emphasis on computer-centric industries, this volume delves into the role of information design in assisting with concepts, such as usability, documenting procedures, and designing for users. Influential members in the technical communication field examine such issues as the application of information design in structuring technical material; innovative ways of integrating information design within development methodologies and social aspects of the workplace; and theoretical approaches that include a practical application of information design, emphasizing the intersection of information design theories and workplace reality. This collection approaches information design from the language-based technical communication side, emphasizing the role of content as it relates to complexity in information design. As such, it treats as paramount the rhetorical and contextual strategies required for the effective design and transmission of information. Content and Complexity: Information Design in Technical Communication explores both theoretical perspectives, as well as the practicalities of information design in areas relevant to technical communicators. This integration of theoretical and applied components make it a practical resource for students, educators, academic researchers, and practitioners in the technical communication and information design fields.
