Book excerpt: The continental margins of the world constitute the most impressive and largest physiographic feature of the earth's surface, and one of fundamentally great geological significance. Continental margins have been the subject of increasing attention in recent years, an interest focused by a body of new data that has provided new insights into their character. This interest was further stimulated by the realization that, in addition to the abundant living resources, continental margins contain petroleum and mineral resources that are accessible with existing technology. This realization, along with their basic geological importance, has provoked further research into the nature of continental margins throughout the world. A summary of these findings, as related to both recent and ancient continental margins, is the subject of this book. At various times in the past we had been approached individually to prepare a basic reference to continental margins; we then proposed to do such a volume jointly. However, the stimulus for the present volume eventually arose from a Penrose Conference arranged through the Geological Society of America. This conference was attended by specialists of numerous disciplines and from throughout the world, many of whom insisted that such a volume would be both timely and useful. Consequently, we agreed to undertake the task of assembling this book, with the objectives of making it available as soon and as inexpensively as possible.

Book excerpt: This volume grew out of two SEPM-sponsored events, an SEPM Research Conference that took place in Casper, Wyoming, in 2002 and an SEPM Research Symposium that was held at the AAPG/SEPM Annual Meeting in 2003. Several other papers have been added to broaden the range of examples presented. The theme of the volume, "Incised Valleys in Time and Space", has been chosen because of the comparison of valleys of different ages and in different settings is a valuable approach to understanding the role of the many factors that interact to create the valley and to emplace the subsequent valley-filling deposits. Each example, whether modern or ancient, represents a real-world experiment that lacks the temporal and spatial scaling issues that inhibit the application of laboratory experiments. Of course, the dependent and independent variables cannot be "controlled" in natural systems, but our ability to deduce the approximate values of these quantities (e.g., subsidence, sediment supply, climate) is increasing continually, such that semiquantitative and even quantitative estimates can be made in some cases. Almost all of the papers in the volume discuss more than a single incised valley, comparing two or more contemporaneous valleys, or valleys of different ages in the same geographic area. Such comparisons bring similarities and differences into sharper focus than any collection of individual case studies could, and highlight the relative importance of the many factors that influence the resulting sedimentary succession.

Book excerpt: La formation et l'évolution de la marge continentale passive Nord Gascogne et du Bassin Armoricain sont fortement liées à l'ouverture du golfe de Gascogne, à la formation des Pyrénées et à l'héritage tectonique. L'étude des structures tectono-sédimentaires, calées aux forages profonds DSDP et pétroliers, ainsi que l'étude de leurs prolongements dans les domaines adjacents (Bassin de Parentis et Bassin de la Manche), ont permis de mettre en évidence une évolution spatio-temporelle de la couverture sédimentaire. Un polyphasage tectonique lors du rifting et deux phases compressives pyrénéennes ont été identifiés. Des événements tectono-sédimentaires Œcatastrophiques' auraient affectés la marge à la fin du rifting. Le Bassin Armoricain serait un bassin sédimentaire jeune ayant toutes les caractéristiques structurales d'une zone de transition océan/continent effondrée à la fin du rifting ou lors de l'initiation de l'accrétion océanique. Le domaine transitionnel comporte un substratum, interprété comme du manteau serpentinisé et recouvert par une couverture sédimentaire post-aptienne homogène. L'étude des structures crustales a permis de connaître la géométrie de la marge : la distance domaine océanique/domaine continental non-aminci est constante le long de la marge ; l'amincissement crustal s'effectue exclusivement sous l'étroite pente continentale, inférieure à 50 km de large ; les blocs basculés,situés au pied de la pente, auraient un rôle mineur dans l'amincissement, étant considérés comme une conséquence et non pas comme une cause de l'amincissement crustal. La géométrie de cette marge restreint l'amincissement crustal et limite le rôle tectonique des blocs basculés. Les modèles géodynamiques actuels d'une marge passive n'expliquent pas la géométrie de la marge Nord Gascogne. Or cette géométrie, similaire à celle du Bassin de Parentis, n'est pas atypique ; l'amincissement serait induit pas d'autres processus géodynamiques que l'extension pure.
