Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous experiments and calculations have shown that isolated metal clusters possess many interesting features, quite different from those known from surface and solid- state physics or from atomic and molecular physics. The technological exploitation of these new properties, e.g. in miniature electronic or mechanical components, requires the cluster to be brought into an environment such as an encapsulating matrix or a surface. Due to the interaction with the contact medium, the properties of the clusters may change or even disappear. Thus the physics of cluster-on-surface systems -- the main subject of this book -- is of fundamental importance. The book addresses a wide audience, from the newcomer to the expert. Starting from fundamental concepts of adsorbate-surface interactions, the modification of electronic properties through electron confinement, and concepts of cluster production, it elucidates the distinct properties of the new metallic nanostructures.

Book excerpt: This early work on the structure of metals is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. Its 579 pages contain a wealth of information on the physical properties and chemistry of various metals. This is a fascinating work and is thoroughly recommended for students of metallurgy. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The excitation spectrum or band structure of electronics is often interpreted as the electronic structure. This definition is based on the Landau theory of elementary excitations, which shows that the reaction of a many-particle system on a weak external perturbation can be described by nearly non-interacting low-energy excitations of one-particle type. In metals these excitations close to the Fermi energy are only lightly damped. On this basis many electronic properties, especially of metals, can be understood and calculated, a breakthrough which has made a considerable contribution to materials science. This book focuses on the basic principles of solid state physics and in particular on actual problems and recent applications which have not previously been reviewed. At present a common electron theory for all types of solids is developing, unifying the viewing and treatment of the electronic structure and electronic properties of metals and semiconductors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic Structure and the Strength of Metals is a collection of prepared lectures presented at the 1956 Page-Barbour Lectures before the University of Virginia. These lectures are based in part on two lectures given in the University of Cambridge as part of a course designed to present some of the ideas of physics to students of the humanities. The first lecture explores the physics of metals, with a particular emphasis on the properties of metals and their relationship with the properties of atoms. The second lecture describes the behavior of the atoms in a piece of metal when it is bent or pulled out. This lecture highlights the strength of solid, which involves the study of the defects in the crystalline structure. The third lecture discusses the concept and experimental evidence of material dislocation. This lecture provides a model of a polycrystalline metal, in which boundaries between grains appear. This book is directed toward physics students and nonspecialists.

Its small mass and strong interaction with the host electrons and nuclei are responsible for many anomalous and interesting solid state effects. In addition, hydrogen in metals gives rise to a number of technological problems such as hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen storage, radiation hardening, first wall problems associated with nuclear fusion reactors, and degradation of the fuel cladding in fission reactors. Both the fundamental effects and applied problems have stimulated a great deal of inter est in the study of metal hydrogen systems in recent years. This is evident from a growing list of publications as well as several international conferences held in this field during the past decade. It is clear that a fundamental understanding of these problems re quires a firm knowledge of the basic interactions between hydrogen, host metal atoms, intrinsic lattice defects and electrons. This understanding is made particularly difficult by hyrogen's small mass and by the large lattice distortions that accompany the hydrogenation process. The purpose of the "International Symposium on the Electronic Structure and Properties of Hydrogen in Metals" held in Richmond, Virginia, March 4-6, 1982 was to increase our fundamental under standing of hydrogen in metals. Such knowledge is essential in solving technologically important questions. The symposium con sisted of twenty-two invited papers and seventy-two contributed poster presentations and attracted nearly 150 participants from thirteen countries. The proceedings of this symposium constitute this book.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book includes all main physical properties of d- and f-transition-metal systems and corresponding theoretical concepts. Special attention is paid to the theory of magnetism and transport phenomena. Some examples of non-traditional questions which are treated in detail in the book: the influence of density of states singularities on electron properties; many-electron description of strong itinerant magnetism; mechanisms of magnetic anisotropy; microscopic theory of anomalous transport phenomena in ferromagnets. Besides considering classical problems of solid state physics as applied to transition metals, modern developments in the theory of correlation effects in d- and f-compounds are considered within many-electron models. The book contains, where possible, a simple physical discussion. More difficult questions are considered in Appendices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to the extensive interest in construction of functional metal organic frameworks (FMOFs), this book discusses the roles of functional groups on the structure and application of metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The contents of the book are classified based on the structural and chemical properties of organic functions, in order to make readers able to compare the different effects of each function on the structure and application of the MOFs. In each chapter, the chemical properties of applied functional groups are gathered to give deeper insight into the roles of organic functions in the structure and application of MOFs. In the function-application properties, the authors discuss how a functional group can dominate the host-guest chemistry of the MOFs and how this host-guest chemistry can expand the effectiveness and efficiency of the material in different fields of applications. Finally, function-structure properties are discussed. In function-application properties, it is discussed how a functional group can affect the topology, porosity, flexibility and stability of the framework. The features of this subject are novel and are presented for the first time.
