Book excerpt: Transport engineering structures are subjected to loads that vary in both time and space. In general mechanics parlance such loads are called moving loads. It is the aim of the book to analyze the effects of this type of load on various elements, components, structures and media of engineering me chanics. In recent years all branches of transport have experienced great advances characterized by increasingly higher speeds and weights of vehicles. As a result, structures and media over or in which the vehicles move have been subjected to vibrations and dynamic stresses far larger than ever before. The author has studied vibrations of elastic and inelastic bodies and structures under the action of moving loads for many years. In the course of his career he has published a number of papers dealing with various aspects of the problem. On the strength of his studies he has arrived at the conclusion that the topic has so grown in scope and importance as to merit a comprehensive treatment. The book is the outcome of his attempt to do so in a single monograph.

Book excerpt: Structural Mechanics, has become established as a classic text on the theory of structures and design methods of structural members. The book clearly and logically presents the subject's basic principles, keeping the mathematical content to its essential minimum. The sixth edition has been revised to take into account changes in standards, and clarifies the content with updated design examples and a new setting of the text. The original simplicity of the mathematical treatment has been maintained, while more emphasis has been placed on the relevance of structural mechanics to the process of structural design, analysis, materials, and loads on buildings and structures according to the current British Standards and European codes of practice. The initial chapters of the book deal with the concept of loads and their effects on structural materials and elements in terms of stress and strain. The significance of the shape of the cross-section of structural elements is then considered. The book finishes with the design of simple structural elements such as beams, columns, rafters, portal frames, dome frames and gravity retaining walls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report to the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. This report provides a better understanding of parking garage live loads and recommends an appropriate value for design. Based on a load survey conducted in nine parking garages in Chicago and Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, and Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts, statistical analyses were carried out of the equivalent uniform distributed loads. These produce the maximum column axial loads and beam midspan moments that the building is expecting to experience during its lifetime. The dynamic amplifications resulting from vehicle motions on the decks and ramps were also investigated, and results suggest a possible reduction of the design live load from the current value of 50 psf, as stipulated in the ASCE-7 and Uniform Building Code, to 40 psf, but with no allowance for reduction according to bay area.
