The environmental conditions considered in the ambient environmental tests included (1) freeze-thaw cycles, (2) high-temperature cycles, (3) high-humidity cycles, (4) ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and (5) saline solution; while the corrosion tests dealt with the corrosion of steel reinforcement embedded in RC columns wrapped with FRP sheets. RC columns were wrapped with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) sheets and conditioned under the environmental conditions listed. After the environmental conditioning, uni-axial compression tests were conducted in order to evaluate the effects on the mechanical properties, such as column capacity, stiffness, and ductility.

The experimental program was established to help determine if FRP wraps provide barriers against the transportation of chlorides into the concrete, or if impermeable wraps trap chlorides and moisture beneath the wrap and thereby accelerate the corrosion process. The focus of this report is on performance of 43 specimens that were removed from exposure testing 5-7 years. The specimens represent typical rectangular (beam) and cylindrical (column) elements in reinforced concrete bridges. Partially wrapped versus unwrapped elements were studied. Other parameters of interest in design and construction included: cast-in chlorides to represent specimens already exposed to a corrosive environment prior to wrapping, cracked versus uncracked elements, addition of corrosion inhibitors, and materials of repair for damage to concrete due to corrosion or the construction traffic prior to wrapping. Guidelines for use of these materials are developed using the results of the test program.

The nation's infrastructure is rapidly deteriorating due to years of abuse and fatigue. Therefore, several economic and reliable solutions have been developed to repair the existing damage and extend the design life of structures at risk of corrosion. One popular method for protecting concrete structures from corrosion is the use of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composite wraps. The premise is a simple one: placing an impermeable barrier around the surface of the concrete should prevent harmful substances such as chlorides from entering and corroding the imbedded reinforcing steel. However, little is known about the long-term effectiveness in preventing corrosion in reinforced concrete structures. The FRP wrap may in fact prevent the chlorides from passing through the concrete, however, the same principle might cause chlorides to be trapped beneath the surface and accelerate corrosion. In this study, the long-term behavior of laboratory specimens exposed to an aggressive chloride-rich environment were examined. This project was designed to develop a greater understanding of the long-term effects of FRP wrapping in preventing corrosion in reinforced concrete structures. Although TxDOT project 0_1774 involves both rectangular and cylindrical specimens, the focus of this thesis is on the specific impact of FRP wraps on partially wrapped versus unwrapped columns. The specimens included in this study are comprised of a wide range of construction parameters. However, despite the multitude of varying mix designs a noticeable trend has emerged as a result of this research.

Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete (RC) is widely used in structures, e.g. residential buildings, bridges, marine structures, and offshore structures. Some RC structures are constructed in harsh environmental conditions, which increase the probability of their deterioration. Corrosion is one of the main causes of deterioration in concrete structures. Consequently, further research is needed to better understand the effect of corrosion on different RC structural elements and materials. In this thesis, the punching shear behaviour of RC two-way slabs was investigated under different levels of corrosion. In addition, different corroded areas were also investigated. Accelerated corrosion techniques were used to achieve the targeted corrosion levels and areas. The objective of this study is to provide experimental information and assessments of the structural performance and behaviour of corroded RC two-way slabs under loading. The objectives were achieved by evaluating the effect of three different levels of corrosion on the punching shear of two-way RC slabs; mild corrosion (15% mass loss); moderate corrosion (25% mass loss); severe corrosion (50% mass loss). In addition, three different delaminated corroded areas will be considered: small corroded area; a large corroded area with enough reinforcement development length; large corroded area without enough reinforcement development length. The experimental program was designed based on statistical methodology in order to do a regression analysis at the end of the test period for the obtained results. The regression analysis used to construct predicted equations that calculate the residual carrying load capacity for corroded RC two-way slabs. The concrete mixture used to pour those elements was designed to conquer the exposure requirements for horizontal elements against de-icing agents according to ACI. For ensuring the poured concrete had an acceptable quality against chloride ions penetrations, rapid chloride penetration test and chloride diffusion were measured for standard cylinder specimens taken during the pouring. The corrosion performance was monitored for all tested slabs by measuring and tracking current measurement, corrosion cracks widths propagation, half-cell potential measurements, natural frequency measurements, chloride content measurements, and mass loss. In addition, the structural behaviour of the corroded slabs was evaluated based on cracking patterns, deflection capacities, deflection profiles, slab rotations, energy absorptions, and ductility indices. Moreover, the actual capacity for each corroded slab was compared with the predictions of punching capacities according to the yield line theory and four different: the Canadian Code (CSA 23.3-14), the American Code (ACI 318-11), the British Standard (BS 8110-97), and the European Code (EC2). Furthermore, this thesis showed a proposed technique to predict roughly the capacity of the different corroded area in the two-way reinforced concrete slabs using current codes. Finally, equations were proposed based on the analysis of variance for the experimental results that could be used by practicing engineers to determine the residual capacities for existing reinforced concrete two-way slabs suffer from corrosion. The experimental results will create a database for corroded slabs under real conditions. The database can then be used to verify future analytical studies of corroded RC structures. Thus, the thesis outcomes will help structural engineers to evaluate the strength degradation and load responses of such structures.

Book excerpt: An experimental study on the simulation of corrosion in a large-scale reinforced concrete column and their repair using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRG) sheets is presented. Seven columns were subjected to an acclerated corrision regime, wrapped using CFRP sheets, then tested to structural failure and (or) subjected to further post-repair accelerated corrision, monitoring, and testing. Accelerated corrision was achieved by adding sodium chloride to the mixing water, applying a current to the reinforcemednt cage, and subjecting the specimens to cyclic, wetting and drying. Results showed that the CFRP repair greatly improved the strength of the repaired member and retarted the rate of post-repair corrosion. Moreover, subjecting the repaired column to extensive, post-repair corrosion resulted in no loss of strength or stiffness and only a slight reduction in the ductility of the repaired member.

Book excerpt: Performance of bridges during previous earthquakes has demonstrated that many structural failures could be attributed to seismic deficiencies in bridge columns. Lack of transverse reinforcement and inadequate splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in potential plastic hinge regions of columns constitute primary reasons for their poor performance. A number of column retrofit techniques have been developed and tested in the past. These techniques include steel jacketing, reinforced concrete jacketing and use of transverse prestressing (RetroBelt) for concrete confinement, shear strengthening and splice clamping. A new retrofit technique, involving fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) jacketing has emerged as a convenient and structurally sound alternative with improved durability. The new technique, although received acceptance in the construction industry, needs to be fully developed as a viable seismic retrofit methodology, supported by reliable design and construction procedures. The successful application of externally applied FRP jackets to existing columns, coupled with deteriorating bridge infrastructure, raised the possibility of using FRP reinforcement for new construction. Stay-in-place formwork, in the form of FRP tubes are being researched for its feasibility. The FRP stay-in-place tubes offer ease in construction, convenient formwork, and when left in place, the protection of concrete against environmental effects, including the protection of steel reinforcement against corrosion, while also serving as column transverse reinforcement. Combined experimental and analytical research was conducted in the current project to i) improve the performance of FRP column jacketing for existing bridge columns, and ii) to develop FRP stay-in-place formwork for new bridge columns. The experimental phase consisted of design, construction and testing of 7 full-scale reinforced concrete bridge columns under simulated seismic loading. The columns represented both existing seismically deficient bridge columns, and new columns in stay-in-place formwork. The existing columns were deficient in either shear, or flexure, where the flexural deficiencies stemmed from lack of concrete confinement and/or use of inadequately spliced longitudinal reinforcement. The test parameters included cross-sectional shape (circular or square), reinforcement splicing, column shear span for flexure and shear-dominant behaviour, FRP jacket thickness, as well as use of FRP tubes as stay-in-place formwork, with or without internally embedded FRP crossties. The columns were subjected to a constant axial compression and incrementally increasing inelastic deformation reversals. The results, presented and discussed in this thesis, indicate that the FRP retrofit methodology provides significant confinement to circular and square columns, improving column ductility substantially. The FRP jack also improved diagonal tension capacity of columns, changing brittle shear-dominant column behavior to ductile flexure dominant response. The jackets, when the transverse strains are controlled, are able to improve performance of inadequately spliced circular columns, while remain somewhat ineffective in improving the performance of spliced square columns. FRP stay-in-place formwork provides excellent ductility to circular and square columns in new concrete columns, offering tremendous potential for use in practice. The analytical phase of the project demonstrates that the current analytical techniques for column analysis can be used for columns with external FRP reinforcement, provided that appropriate material models are used for confined concrete, FRP composites and reinforcement steel. Plastic analysis for flexure, starting with sectional moment-curvature analysis and continuing into member analysis incorporating the formation of plastic hinging, provide excellent predictions of inelastic force-deformation envelopes of recorded hysteretic behaviour. A displacement based design procedure adapted to FRP jacketed columns, as well as columns in FRP stay-in-place formwork provide a reliable design procedure for both retrofitting existing columns and designing new FRP reinforced concrete columns.

This corrosion deterioration can lead to damage resulting in capacity loss or even failure. For structures exposed to coastal marine environments or deicing or anti-icing applications, this deterioration is often accelerated. The corrosion deterioration in RC structures has raised significant attention from researchers and analytical studies and experimental tests have been performed worldwide. Durability and serviceability of corroded RC structures have been investigated to determine the relationship between the corrosion process and the service life of these structures and these relationships have been used to develop service life models. Corrosion of the reinforcement could be especially detrimental to the seismic performance of bridge structures and limited efforts have been made to model the structural performance of RC structures exhibiting corrosion during seismic events. The objective of this paper is to first develop a realistic corrosion rate model that represents actual corrosion conditions and then, using this model, develop another model to predict the time-variant seismic performance of RC bridge columns exhibiting corrosion of the steel reinforcement. This information can then be used to optimize design, maintenance, repair, and/or replacement of RC bridges. The service life of RC structures subject to corrosion is comprised of two general phases: the initiation and the propagation phases. Significant efforts have been made in modeling the corrosion initiation phase, but much less efforts have focused on the propagation phase. Different prediction models have been developed to simulate the corrosion process, including empirical models, numerical models (finite element method, boundary element method, and resistor networks and transmission line approach), and analytical models. This study provides a critical review of existing models used to predict the corrosion propagation of steel in RC structures. This review is followed by the development of a new model that incorporates critical parameters for modeling the corrosion propagation phase. The new model is based on the physical process and is calibrated with a set of measured long-term field data. This new model is then used to predict corrosion deterioration of a RC column. The column is then analyzed for seismic performance at different states. A reliability analysis of the lateral capacity of the column is then performed. The example column is for a typical highway bridge built in Oregon during the 1970s.

In line with this concept, all the columns of the Highland Drive Bridge at I-80 in Salt Lake City were rehabilitated with carbon FRP composites in June 2000. The present project will evaluate the performance of the carbon FRP composite for two of these columns and its ability to maintain a good bond to the concrete, thus restoring and maintaining the column's capacity after exposure to field conditions for eight years. In addition, the use of a GFRP spiral as a non-corroding column tie will be examined.

Book excerpt: This experimental study is a part of an ongoing research project initiated by Lee (1998) and continued by Khajehpour (2001). This research is aimed at evaluating repair of large-scale reinforced concrete columns using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets, in terms of establishing the effect of wraps on the corrosion of steel reinforcement. This project involves the construction and testing of six reinforced concrete columns, testing eleven columns remaining from the previous study. Four specimens were repaired with CFRP wraps. Testing included accelerated corrosion of both new and repaired specimens and natural corrosion of the reinforcement in five columns (including two repaired), and one prism specimen. It was found that corrosion activity temporarily increases after repair. After initial increase, the rate of corrosion becomes the same as in unwrapped columns or slightly lower. Columns subjected to natural corrosion expand less than before repair due to restraining effect of the wrap. Columns subjected to accelerated corrosion do not expand for sometime, after which they expand gradually.
