The field study presented is a significant improvement on laboratory studies in the literature in terms of complex rail profile and crack conditions as well as high operational noise. AE waves induced by crack propagation, crack closure, wheel-rail impact and operational noise were obtained through a series of laboratory and field tests, and analyzed by wavelet transform (WT) and synchrosqueezed wavelet transform (SWT). A wavelet power-based index and the enhanced SWT scalogram were sequentially proposed to classify AE waves induced by different mechanisms according to their energy distributions in the time–frequency domain. A novel crack sizing method taking advantage of crack closure-induced AE waves was developed based on fatigue tests in the laboratory. The propagation characteristics of AE waves in the rail were investigated, and Tsallis synchrosqueezed wavelet entropy (TSWE) with time was finally brought forward to detect and locate rail cracks in the field. The proposed strategy for detection, location and sizing of rail cracks helps to ensure the safe and smooth operation of the railway system. This thesis is of interest to graduate students, researchers and practitioners in the area of structural health monitoring.

In this project, the characteristics of acoustic emission in the fatigue crack growth of aluminum alloy 2025 for online structural monitoring have been investigated and determined. Acoustic emission tests have been performed in two parts: bending fatigue test with the aim of initiation of fatigue cracks in aluminum alloy 2025 specimens and following tensile tests with the aim of growth of fatigue cracks. The acoustic emission signals and parameters sent by the acoustic emission sensor during both tests were received and recorded by the acoustic emission software. According to the received acoustic emission information, various diagrams are plotted. Analyzing the results from online acoustic emission monitoring showed, the acoustic emission method can be considered as a suitable and reliable technique for detecting crack initiation and crack growth in aluminum alloy 2025.

A structural health monitoring sensor system that uses acoustic emission technique for monitoring safety of such structures is described in this report. A "continuous sensor" formed by connecting multiple sensor nodes in series arrangement to form a single channel sensor is proposed to monitor acoustic emission signals. This report describes the work performed for monitoring fatigue cracks in aluminum lap joints. The traditional AE sensors as well as bonded continuous sensors described above were used to monitor acoustic emission signals emanating from crack growth in aluminum 7075-T6 and 2024-T3 specimens. It was possible to differentiate the signals due to crack growth from noise signals arising from fretting and RF pickup. The sensitivity of the bonded continuous sensor was comparable to commercial high sensitivity resonant frequency AE sensors. The relationship between acoustic emission parameters and the crack growth rate in the aluminum specimens is examined.
